Tredway Clarke Son of the Reverend Richard Clarke by his third wife Susannah Crockatt (Rev. Clarke, ultimately had four wives and a number ofTredway Clarke’s half-siblings, ended up in India). Tredway Clarke embarked as a cadet for India in January 1780. He arrived in Madras the following July, was made a Lieutenant Fireworker in the Madras Artillery, and appointed A.D.C. to Colonel Edward James, head of the Madras Artillery and the husband of one of his half-sisters. The army took the field shortly thereafter in the course of the Second Mysore War against Tippoo Sultan of Seringapatam. Tredway Clarke was severely wounded in June 1781 at Chilambrum, and was forced to leave the front to recuperate in Madras. He fought again throughout the Third Mysore War (1790-92), and in February 1798 was appointed to the highly responsible position of head commissary of ordnance and stores at Fort St. George, Madras -- a position he held throughout the course of the Fourth Mysore War which witnessed the final defeat of Tippoo by General Harris and the future Duke of Wellington at the battle of Seringapatam in 1799. On 12 February 1795 Clarke married Lucy Dorothea Pye Sydenham and had six children by her. By the turn of the century the family was prospering, Tredway Clarke having by that time become a rich man. However, the early years of 19th century were harsh ones for him. By 1804 his wife had become so ill that he decided to take the family back to in hopes of her health improving. She died at sea and was buried in St. Helena, where Tredway Clarke learned that yet another blow had befallen him with the loss of his entire fortune due to the collapse of a Madras agency house in which he had sunk his money. On arrival in England Clarke turned to his wife’s family for help, leaving his six children in the care of Lucy Dorothea Pye’s sister Sarah (Sally) while he sought a new job back in India as a means of recouping his fortune to support his family. Clarke returned to India in 1807. Two years later, as Commandant of the Madras artillery, he was brought up before government during a mutiny between the East India Company’s officers and those of the Crown, and like many of his fellow officers was banished to Sadras, an old Dutch station on the coast south of Madras, until the entire affair blew over. Clarke maintained his position, but the social fabric of British society in Madras had been so poisoned by the mutiny that in 1811, pleading illness, he resigned the service and returned to England. There he married Sally Sydenham, who had been caring for his children while he was back in India, and who had maintained a correspondence with him during that time. In 1820 the Court of Directors asked Clarke to return to Madras to resume his command of the artillery there, but Clarke declined the offer on grounds of his health. Notwithstanding his troubled health Tredway Clarke in fact lived to the age of 94, rising to the rank of General by the end of his life.
