Jürgen Jahn (Berlin) Erinnerung an Bernhard Steinberger (geb. 17. 09. 1917 in München, gest.

  • The German Program for Social Reorganisation Politics As An
780 UTOPIE kreativ, H. 153/154 (Juli/August 2003) – Summaries ULRICH BUSCH Agenda 2010 – the German program for social reorganisation Germany is in the throes of an economic and structural crisis, leaving little hope for a speedy improvement of the situation without strong public inter- vention in the economic and social spheres. The crisis appears more than likely to worsen further: the nightmares of recession, deflation, mass un- employment and impoverishment dominate the current discussion and pave the way for far-reaching reforms in the economy and the society. The Agenda 2010 is the government’s response to that development. But the measures planned in these reforms are socially unbalanced and economically counter- productive in certain aspects. They aggravate social polarisation without enhancing either economic growth or raising employment rates. THOMAS FALKNER Politics as an Opportunity After the recent breakdown of the party’s federal presidium, elected in fall 2002, the crisis has taken on proportions that are an existential threat to the party. But the author still sees a chance for the party to re-emerge as a political force in the Federal Republic. The party must take substantial steps to reorga- nise itself into a truly political party including political integration inside the party itself and inner-party pluralism. In view of the deficits in the social reform discourse in Germany and the creative contributions the socialists can offer to this debate, the author favours a PDS. This would provide the party with a chance to become the most innovative party in the country in the sphere of social affairs.

May hammers and hearts ring out in unison. Exploring Heimat in GDR literature and film of the 1950s and 1960s. DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sylvia Fischer Graduate Program in Germanic Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Professor Helen Fehervary, Advisor Professor John Davidson Professor Bernd Fischer Copyright by Sylvia Fischer 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores manifestations of the topos Heimat in East German novels and films of the 1950s and 1960s. In particular, it identifies Heimat as a cultural- anthropological concept taking shape as an individual and social human endeavor, and explores the tensions, that arise between this endeavor and a socialist Heimat as defined by the GDR state. I propose that these tensions were never fully resolved, although it was a core ideal of the socialist society to harmonize them. Analyses of novels by Hans Marchwitza, Anna Seghers, Karl Heinz Jakobs, and Werner Bräunig, and feature films and documentary films by Kurt Maetzig, Konrad Wolf, and Winfried Junge reveal different approaches to the understanding of Heimat, as well as conceptions of how to resolve the tensions described above. Their conclusions range from equating Heimat with a societal form, to acknowledging and wrestling with an increasing gap between the individual’s grasp of Heimat and that of the state, and to mourning this gap. By employing Heimat as a discursive medium, this dissertation adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussion about the development of real socialism and its discontents in the GDR.
