2 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION Message From the President

November 2016

Dear Alumni, Families and Friends: Each day that I come to work at Christian Brothers High School, I see the culmination of 140 years of Lasallian Catholic education in Sacramento and the result is nothing short of a masterpiece. Our 1,149 young men and women thrive in an inclusive, nurturing, faith-filled community. Our faculty and staff are devoted to excellence in education while touching the hearts and minds of the students entrusted to our care. I am profoundly grateful to God for the grace He has shown in the many Brothers, teachers, staff members, alumni, families, students and friends who collectively shaped Christian Brothers into the phenomenal school community that it is today. This issue of Connection contains the Annual Report which recognizes the many donors who so generously supported the school between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Thanks, in large part to their generosity, we lead the region in need-based tuition assistance. In 2016-17, we are distributing $2.6 million in need-based tuition assistance to 435 deserving students (nearly four of every 10 students). At this year’s commencement, Elmer Lizarde ’16, himself a recipient of tuition assistance, delivered one of the most powerful salutatorian addresses that I have heard. The depth of his understanding of the Lasallian Core Principles and stalwart appreciation for the Lasallian educators and classmates who so lovingly embodied them over the course of his four years was palpable.

“We are bound together by a set of values and principles that encourage us to act on our love…What we've learned here goes beyond common knowledge, because quality education reaches much farther than a classroom. Inclusive community isn't a goal, but a standard; concern for the poor isn't an idea, but an action; respect for all people is a responsibility; and faith in the presence of God is a blessing." - Elmer Lizarde ’16, salutatorian

We are grateful to our benefactors for their loyal partnership…for acting on their love. Please know that we are careful stewards of their gifts and continue in our commitment to fiscal responsibility while maintaining the CB tradition of excellent, value-centered, Lasallian Catholic education. If you haven’t been to campus in a while, I invite you to stop by for a tour and see firsthand the many reasons CB is the place to be. Live Jesus in our Hearts!

ANIMAL CRACKERS

Chico, Harpo and Groucho Marx lived again in CB’s spring musical production of the Marx Brothers classic, Animal Crackers. The early 20th century play centers around the chaos following the theft of a valuable painting during a party to honor glorified African explorer, Captain Spaulding. CB’s fantastic student-actors dedicated many hours to researching their roles and channeling the personas of the famous siblings. Over 60 students worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on stage to bring the beautiful production to life on the stage of the Thea Stidum Theatre. Bravo!

Christian Brothers High School is proud to welcome the school’s 47th principal, Mr. John O’Connor. O’Connor brings extensive experience and a deep commit- ment to Lasallian Catholic education to the position, as seen in his 22 years of experience in education, 17 of those with Lasallian schools. O’Connor attended Archbishop O’Hara High School, a Lasallian Catholic school, in Kansas City, Missouri. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from University of Missouri, Columbia and a master’s degree in school leadership from Baker University. He returned to his high school alma mater eight years later to begin his teaching career and coach football. He then moved on to serve as dean of students, athletic director, assistant principal and principal at other schools in Kansas City before ultimately returning to Archbishop O’Hara in 2011 to serve as principal and activities director. In 2015, the diocese made the decision to close Archbishop O'Hara and replace the school with a new Catholic high school that would not be guided by the Lasallian charism. “I am so happy to be at Christian Brothers because of its strong Lasallian tradition and amazing school culture,” says O’Connor. “Since the start, it has felt incredibly warm and welcoming. There is an indescribable energy on campus and within the student body. Everyone I encounter has been fantastic to work with. I look forward to having a great school year and continuing the tradition of Christian Brothers.” “It was clear during the hiring process that John O’Connor is deeply committed to Lasallian Catholic traditions,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “His dedication to De La Salle’s mission and experience in the classroom, on the field and as “I’m grateful to be entrusted an administrator were unparalleled. 2016 Lasallian Educator of the Year

CHUCK ZANNETTI

Students erupted in boisterous cheers as Mr. Chuck Zannetti made his way to the front of the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium to receive the 2016 Lasallian Educator of the Year award at the Founder’s Day Liturgy on April 28.

The award came just days before the end of the school year and the beginning of Zannetti’s retirement after 26 years of teaching religion at Christian Brothers. Initially working towards a life in the priesthood, Zannetti’s plans changed when he met and fell in love with his now wife, Patty Kirrene. He began working at Christian Brothers in 1990, just as CB became a coeducational school. “Every year this school keeps getting better and better. The students are wonderful, the programs have grown immensely, and the Lasallian mission is so strong through- out the community. I have seen the development of CB over the past 26 years and I will miss it dearly,” says Zannetti. “He is a blessing to this community and has left an imprint on each student’s heart. Through his excellence in teach- ing, bright personality, and his emphasis on the Catholic faith, Mr. Zannetti has been a sign of faith for me. He has taught me to serve others by his example. He continuously commits himself to his vocation of being a Lasallian,” says Anna Sorensen ’16. For Brendan Hogan ’95, Zannetti wears many hats including teacher, colleague and friend, “As teachers sometimes we don’t know if the lessons we are teaching are actually being learned. Teachers can test for them and students can remember for a week or more, but do you retain them for a lifetime? CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 15 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Sam Regalado ‘07 CB WAS THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME…

Sam Regalado ’07 demonstrates exactly why Christian Brothers High School provides young people of limited financial means with the finest possible academic and spiritual education. As a student who faced serious challenges and financial limitations, his life was dramatically improved by his four years at CB. Sam graduated with honors from Christian Brothers, received his bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and is now working towards both his M.D. and Ph.D. at University of Washington. Tuition assistance made all the difference in Sam’s life and he’s not shy in stating how he feels about the impact its donors have made in his life.

“Christian Brothers was my saving grace!”

Sam’s early interest in biology at Christian Brothers inspired him to study biochemistry as a pre-med major at Cal. His commitment to his studies is only outshone by his passionate drive to serve others through medical research and innovations. His scholastic achievements on their own are impressive. His ability to focus on his studies during teen years marked by instability and uncertainty is noteworthy. Sam chalks up much of his success – both as an academic and as a person – to the teachers at CB who taught him life values along with coursework.

“It’s where you start that matters most. I got my start at Christian Brothers because someone invested in a kid like me, a kid who otherwise never would have had a chance. Statistically speaking, I am not where I’m supposed to be. CB was the difference for me.”

Christian Brothers’ commitment to the Lasallian tradition of giving a “human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor and working class” provides opportunities that make a critical difference for hundreds of students each year. Sam, as a young alumnus, made his first gift to CB this year, saying “that’s why I decided to give to Christian Brothers. I’m a student, so I can’t give a lot, but I’m giving what I can so that others can have the same chance I did.”

La Sala even made a career for herself out of running, working in race management for the past 12 years on events including the Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco marathons, before starting her own race management company, Blistering Pace Race Management, in April 2016. So when CB came up with the idea to organize a 5K, Michelle La Sala’s name naturally emerged. “I got involved with the Falcon 5K through Nancy Smith-Fagan and Dennis Zilaff ’71. I met with Nancy in the fall of 2015 about the idea of organizing a CB 5K , and then it just came alive…,” says La Sala. Coincidentally, La Sala was working on getting Blistering Pace Race Management up and running, making the Falcon 5K the perfect test race. After months of meeting and preparation, the first Falcon 5K was held at William Land Park on April 2, 2016. In its first year, the event drew over 600 participants, raising $14,589 for CB student activities and programs. La Sala is thrilled with the event’s turnout and believes it is a great start for a brand new tradition with the potential for major growth, “Having 600 participants for a first-time 5K race is great! It shows the event’s potential for growth and interest of the community.” “This event would not have been possible with Michelle’s help and expertise!
