Saturday 1 April 2017 SATURDAY 1 APRIL 2017 After the mists have risen at dawn, the town of Bundanoon becomes Brigadoon for a day (even the name on the station changes to Brigadoon!) The main street is closed and there is a bustle of activity as people prepare for the big parade. Visitors from all over Australia are making their way to Brigadoon, one of the world’s largest annual highland gatherings. The day’s events include bands, demonstrations of Scottish Country Dancing, Hay Toss, Caber Toss, Haggis Hurling, with over 100 variety & specialty stalls, souvenirs, arts, crafts, Scottish goods & Tartan and much more! The feature event is The Tartan Warriors introducing ‘The Australian Highland Heavy Events Championship’, plus the Bundanoon Stones of Manhood. Chieftain of the day is Author & Rock Idol, Mr Jimmy Barnes. PICK UP TIMES: 6.00am Crawford Street, Queanbeyan 7.00am West Row Bus Stop, City 6.40am Woden Bay 18 7.10am Southwell Park (Northbound Side) Depart Queanbeyan & Canberra and travel to Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands, arriving in time for the Gala Street Parade, where thousands line the streets and hundreds of pipes and drums, colourful floats and displays, marchers, vintage cars and service & community vehicles make their way to the grounds for the games. Morning tea from the coach is available. The remainder of the day is spent at the 40th Annual Highland Gathering watching the many events, visiting some or all the many variety stalls, sampling the Scottish food, listening to the pipe bands and much more. We depart for home following the Closing Ceremony (approx. 5.00pm), arriving back in Canberra to commence drop offs at 7.00pm. PLEASE BRING A FOLDING CHAIR, AS THERE IS LIMITED SEATING AVAILABLE TRAVEL CLUB MEMBERS: $95.00pp NON-MEMBERS: $115.00pp COST INCLUDES: Morning tea from the coach (weather permitting), Entry, luxury coach travel and GST. Potter Travel recommends that Travel Insurance be taken to protect against unforeseen circumstances. Travel Insurance is available through Potter Travel, but doesn’t have to be taken out with us.   • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
    Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.
