On 10 October 2019, Complainant 1 lodged a gambling dispute with the Northern Territory Racing Commission (the Commission) against the licensed sports bookmaker, BetEasy Pty Ltd (BetEasy) pursuant to section 85(2) of the Racing and Betting Act (the Act). 2. Complainant 1 is aggrieved that two multi bets that he placed with BetEasy on 1 August 2019 were cancelled and his stakes refunded some 30 days after the bets were struck and after he had confirmed with several representatives from BetEasy over the telephone prior to placing the bets, that the bets could be made.     SUBMISSION TO THE PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION RE COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS ON THE PARALLEL IMPORTATION OF BOOKS 14 January, 2009 As a peak Australian voluntary organisation whose membership represents authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, teachers, librarians, teacher-librarians and parents, the Children's Book Council of Australia would like to express its objection to changes to present provisions of the Copyright Act that restrict parallel importation. Australia has a vibrant book industry, including the publication of many books for children. We see these books as a major enculturating force – they help Australian children to discover and celebrate who we are and what is important to us; they tell us our own unique stories in our own language/s, asking us to critically examine ourselves and our way of life. Every year, in schools around Australia, tens of thousands of Australian children celebrate the best of Australian children's literature, culminating in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards followed by Book Week. Australian award-winning books are written by new as well as established authors. With some of these books, Australian publishers have taken a chance in their publication; a chance which may not have been taken if parallel importation restrictions had been lifted. Australian authors feature prominently in international awards and honour lists because of the high quality of their work.     Media Release Sofie Laguna named winner of Miles Franklin Award 2015 Award has supported Australian authors with close to $1 million in philanthropic funds distributed 23 June 2015 Perpetual, as Trustee of the Miles Franklin Literary Award, today announced Sofie Laguna as the winner of the 2015 award for her novel, The Eye of the Sheep. The Miles Franklin Literary Award, recognised as Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, was established in 1954 through the Will of My Brilliant Career author, Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, to encourage and support writers of Australian literature. Ms Laguna will receive $60,000 in prize money with her novel strongly presenting “Australian Life in any of its phases” and judged to be of the “highest literary merit”, in line with the criteria set out by Miles Franklin. Since moving away from careers in law and acting, Melbourne-based Ms Laguna has written for a wide readership, from picture books for very young children to series for older readers. Her debut novel for adults, One Foot Wrong, was long-listed for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2009. The Eye of the Sheep was selected from a short list of powerful Australian voices depicting unforgettable characters, including authors Joan London, Sonya Hartnett, Christine Piper and Craig Sherborne. Commenting on behalf of the judging panel, State Library of NSW Mitchell Librarian, Richard Neville, said that the power of Ms Laguna’s finely crafted novel lies in the “raw, high-energy and coruscating language” which describes the world of central character, young Jimmy Flick. “Jimmy Flick is a character who sees everything, but his manic x-ray perceptions don’t correspond with the way others see his world.
