Therefore, on March 15, Kearney County residents will go to the polls and vote whether to approve a $10 million bond issue for construction of a new patient wing and renovation of existing patient rooms. From an economic point of view, a thriving hospital means a thriving community. Sounds like a similar story of our small rural communities that dry up after losing their grocery store. It is important to recognize the signiÀ cant impact of the hospital on the health, safety, welfare and economic development of the community by virtue of its function and need for growth and expansion. An updated hospital can be expected to give a boost to many local businesses. The construction phase of Kearney County Health Services is expected to last over a period of two years and will generate additional revenue to Kearney County from the impact of construction employment. Hospitals also make substantial contributions to local and regional economies through the purchase of goods and services. Along with the hospital being vital to the community, it is very important to their 150 employees. In Kearney County, health care is the second largest employer and as a base employer that means each dollar spent for earnings and employment creates additional earnings and jobs in the region. This is a sign of importance of the sector to the regional economy. Several other local businesses are certain they will beneÀ t from the hospital’s growth. With the hospital servicing a multi-county region, it is important for us to understand how vital KCHS is to our economy. Looks to me like a community our size without a hospital could be like riding a bicycle standing still. than twice a step up from that. enough to see its completion. I am excited about all of it. Nonetheless, those horse meat sandwiches would stand a better chance of acceptance than his legislation. The view from here: Critics attacked his bill from lots of angles, but the most problematic has to do with how cops would enforce such a law. Janssen said he didn’t know, but that he was sure they could avoid impermis- sible racial proÀ ling! A legitimate response would be: Huh? The bill would have law enforcement ofÀ cers check the resident status of anyone who sparked ‘reasonable suspicion’ that they might be in the country illegally. This would happen after such a person had been Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau stopped for some other suspected Randy Myers misdeed. What is ‘reasonable suspi- cion,’ other than a standard which falls way short of the ‘probable cause’ bar?
