Getting Started Select or search for a publication type.

Upon making your selection, the design choices will display. Single click to see a larger sample in the right panel. Double click on your choice to start using the design choice.

Zoom By default, the editing will display the entire page. The text will most likely be too small to read.

Page Design On the Page Design tab, use the Schemes area of the toolbar to change the color or font scheme.

Working With Text

Editing Text

All text in Publisher is contained within text boxes. These text boxes, by default, contain “filler text.” You will need to delete the filler text and enter your own text.

Formatting Text On the Home tab, the font formatting area of the toolbar will be greyed out until you click in a text box. After clicking in a text box, you will be able to format and edit your text, just as you would in Microsoft Word.

Page 3 of 8 © D. Rich, 2012 Text Boxes If text is too large for text box, the text box handles will appear red. To enlarge a text box, grab and drag one of the red dots.

To move a text box, hover your mouse on the edge of the box and the crosshairs will appear.

To delete text from a text box, use your or . Empty text boxes will appear with a dotted line border, but will not display when printed.

To delete the entire text box, place your mouse over it and right click. Choose Cut .

Working With Objects On the Home tab, use the Objects area of the toolbar to add more text boxes, images, tables, and shapes.

Page 4 of 8 © D. Rich, 2012 Grouped objects move as though they are one object. There will only be one set handles (little white circles on the sides and corners).

To ungroup the objects so that they can move independently, double click on the object. This will open the object Drawing Tools Formatting tab. Click on the Ungroup tool in the Arrange area of the toolbar.

You will know that the objects are ungrouped because you will see handles for all parts of the object.

Layering (Arranging) Objects To layer or arrange objects on the page, first select an object on the page. Then choose the Drawing Tools Formatting toolbar. In the Arrange area of the toolbar, use the Bring Forward and Send Backward tools to send the object to the desired layer.

Bring to Front = brings the object to the top-most layer Send to Back = sends the object to the bottom layer Bring Forward = brings the object forward one layer Send Backward = sends the object back one layer

When manually adding any object to the publication, the newest object will be on the top- most layer.

Saving Your Publication If you plan to share your publication electronically (via email or web), it is recommended that you save a copy as a PDF. Microsoft Publisher is not a standard part of the Microsoft Office suite, and if your recipients do not have it installed on their computers, they will not be able to view your publication.

Saving an Editable Copy Choose the File tab, and select Save As . This will save your publication as a Publisher file. If you need to edit the publication in the future, you will need to open this copy to make changes.

Saving a PDF Copy Choose the File tab, and select Save As.

In the second box, use the drop down arrow to select PDF.

This will save your publication as a PDF file, which all recipients will be able to open in Adobe Reader, a free downloadable program that is on most computers. This copy of the publication will not be editable.
