Getting Started

Select a publication type from the left-hand panel. Your design choices will appear in the center panel.

Single click a design choice from the center panel. In the right-hand panel, you can edit the default color and font scheme if desired. Options will differ, depending on the chosen publication type.

Then click the Create in the lower right-hand corner.

To reopen at any time, choose View > Task Pane.

Zoom Use drop down or + - icons.

Multi-page publications contain navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Editing Text All text in Publisher is contained within text boxes. These text boxes, by default, contain “filler text.” You will need to delete the filler text and enter your own text.

Formatting Text All text in Publisher is contained within text boxes. You will need to click inside the text box to select the text you wish to edit. Edit and format as you would in Word, by using the Formatting ,

You can also choose Format > Font for more formatting options.

Text Boxes If text is too large for text box, the text box overflow (A…) symbol appears. To enlarge a text box, grab and drag one of the white circles.

To move a text box, hover your mouse on the edge of the box and the crosshairs will appear.

To delete text from a text box, use your or . Empty text boxes will appear with a dotted line border, but will not display when printed.

Page 4 of 8 © D. Rich, 2010 To delete the entire text box, place your mouse over it and right click. Choose Cut.

Working With Objects

Use the menu on the far left of the screen to insert various objects.

Grouped objects move as though they are one object.

Page 5 of 8 © D. Rich, 2010 To ungroup the objects so that they can move independently, single click on the Group symbol.

To change the color of one part of the group, double click on that part of the group. Use the paint bucket icon to change the color. Click on the arrow to the right of the paint bucket to view color choices.

To change the outline of an object, select it, and then use line style and line color tools. Click on the arrow to the right of the line color tool to view color choices.

Page 6 of 8 © D. Rich, 2010 To add shadow or 3d effects to an object, select it, and then use the shadow styles or 3D styles tool.

To group or regroup objects, hold down the Control (CTRL) key, and click on the objects to be grouped. Then single click on the Group symbol.

Layering (Arranging) Objects To layer or arrange objects on the page, first select an object on the page. Then choose Arrange > Order.

Bring to Front = brings the object to the top-most layer Send to Back = sends the object to the bottom layer Bring Forward = brings the object forward one layer Send Backward = sends the object back one layer

When manually adding any object to the publication, the newest object will be on the top- most layer.

Page 7 of 8 © D. Rich, 2010 Saving Your Publication If you plan to share your publication electronically (via email or web), it is recommended that you save a copy as a PDF. Microsoft Publisher is not a standard part of the Microsoft Office suite, and if your recipients do not have it installed on their computers, they will not be able to view your publication.

Saving an Editable Copy Choose File > Save As. This will save your publication as a Publisher file. If you need to edit the publication in the future, you will need to open this copy to make changes.

Saving a PDF Copy CLICK HERE to learn how to use a free PDF creator program. This will save your publication as a PDF file, which all recipients will be able to open In Adobe Reader, a free downloadable program that is on most computers. This copy of the publication will not be editable.
