FABRIC TESTING ~Sachi Chordia TESTS FOR NATURAL FABRICS 1. MUSLIN Visual Inspection Washing Test According to what is When put Muslin is seen and observed in put in water I had to the fabric it is rub and handle with muslin, weaved. care because of the fine The weaved lines are . clearly seen along with Muslin when wet has details of the the visibly shrunk. that has been woven. • To begin with it burned rapidly with yellow flames. • The smell what I observed was that of paper burning. • The fabric fell as it is and the effect was seen even after it was burnt fully and fell down. • The ashes were not too many but little, all in the same net effect and quicly burnt. • It took very few seconds for it to catch fire and it kept burning once burnt and left not with the flame but with the heat itself. 2. Visual Inspection Washing Test This fabric when seen To begin with there is and felt itself shows no shrinkage that I how it is Silk. observed while it was It has really smooth wet and dried as well. texture from what I felt From what I read a lot and also a very soft of silk looses color flowy fabric, when put in machine something that I was and hence I observed able to fold and put it how it works when the way I wanted to in rubbed with hand. my hand and fingers. It It looked very was not very transperent in water stretchable but yet very and floated. tsrong is what I If I would have wet it observed. in warm water there would have been a slight shrink. Burning Test

• Burning silk surpisingly was different from what I thought about it. • Firstly it gave smell of burning hair., and also somewhat of a wire burning. • There were no ashes as such and it did not burn completly. It kept blowing off on it's own and I had to burn it time and again. • The ashes were black itself along with sometimes grayish. 3. COTTON Visual Inspection Washing Test Cotton being one of • Considering cotton the mst common is prone to get fabrics it was easy to shurnk, so did it recognise it and very happen to some quick. extent when I had It was very soft when rubbed it in water felt and something in and dried it later. which when folded Not very very wrinked marks shows. obvious but a It was perfect being measureable shrink. not too heavy or bulky • It became pretyy nor very light. Blotting technique is something I read about. Burning Test

• Cotton burns rapidly and burns with a yellow flame. • There was an after glow when burnt and it stayed long and also the ashes showed were grayish black. • The smell for me was personally like paper burning smell. • The ashes shrunk and werein peices yet. 3. Visual Inspection Washing Test Linen fabric is one of • Firstly what I those fabric which by observed what that seeing itself the linen was stiff communicates. Burning Test • This burning test was one of a kind. It was something I never observed earlier. • The surpise was that when I burnt this after burning the effect was still seen and exactly seen even the minute details. • I never imaged that it would be this way. • There were no ashes seprtaly that fell off but whatever was there was all net finish very clearly seen. • It burned rapidly. • Tobacco or cigrattee smell is what came each time I bruned and smelled it. Rest it styaed as it is. Burning Test • Burning satin what I first observed was that it did immediatly caught the fire but again very soon went off for which I burned it twice or thrice to see the reaction. • 2nd most important thing I noticed was how the fabric became after burning it. The fabric became sticky and slimy and afta while when it dried up it looked so gloassy the ashes itself. • The ashes were like wires and threads basically slimy to see but not exactly when felt. • I personally also observed that smell of burning tire or rubbers. • The ahses were dark colored and very prominently. At certain places there were grayish black ashes but all glossy and mat finish. 2. Visual Inspection Washing Test

Burning Test • When I had to burn chiffon it was not something I expected to react in a way I will put it down immediatly fearing my hand to burn. • It was a very very rapid reaction with huge flames and not going off on its own like others. It got completly burned off and there were not ashes falling off but a small peice burnt that remained. • Another observation was that it left behind the color residue like oilu and sticky. The stain after burning stayed unlike other fabrics. • Another thing I noticed was the smell which was like that off oil, food or ghee burning. 3. ( mix ) Visual Inspection Washing Test Georgette is one of When put in water those fabrics in which georgette completly a texture like chiffon shrinks. has net , here it is When I removed it out like dots and sall pores of water it unshriked all together. kind off on its own and Basically crinkly then eventually fell texture. apart to its own form It is one fabric which when dried. got amnipulated easily There was no color and hence I think can bleeding as much or drapped rightly. any other issue relating It is not very to the fabric that I transperent or observed. translucent but yes to some extent it is. When I crumpled it, the creases stay as it is for a while and folds are seen. Burning Test • Burning Georgette was a different one all together. • The fabric caught fire qucik but did not burn all together at once got off in between on it's own. • Further the ashes here did fall off and also they were really crisp. The were crisp and on trying to touch it made crackling sounds and fell. • The ahses smelled like that of hair buring smell and rest the color remianed something normal. LEARNING: This assignment was an introduction to what the real world actually be in terms of on designing and their relation with fabrics. Considering how at every step I will need fabric understanding and knowledge. This assignment was an eye opener in terms of every fabric reacts with different mediums. How one single fabric material has many types. How it is all just so vast yet and understanding can be made from each of them. Considering the lockdown and COVID19 I completed this assignemnt with whatever fabric I had at home as I could not step out to get new. I tried exploring the maximum and I think this was a great start for what's coming up next. Looking forward to more learnings. THANK YOU
