There were no big-name designers with models to show o ff their creations. There was no Project Runway . There were no department stores or clothing empori - ums where one could browse for and purchase garments of the latest fashion. How did a woman achieve a stylish appearance? Just as we have Vogue , Elle and In Style magazines to keep us up to date on the most current styles, women of the Regency era had The Ladies Magazine , La Belle Assemblée , Le Beau Monde , The Gallery of Fashion , and a host of other publications (Decker) .

    Indian Journal of Fibre & Textile Research Vol 44, March 2019, pp. 75-82 Influence of weave structure on low-stress mechanical properties and total hand values of cotton fabric Tapas Ranjan Kara & Arvind Pandharpure Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization, Wardha 442 001, India Received 23 May 2017; revised received and accepted 10 November 2017 Attempts have been made to produce other derivatives of cotton muslin fabric by altering its weave structure from plain to twill and sateen with higher pick insertions to make it dimensionally stable for its potential use in readymade garments, besides saris and ladies dress materials. Low-stress mechanical properties and total hand values of these fabrics are evaluated to understand their suitability for use in readymade garments. It is observed that sateen shows higher drape, higher compression resilience, lowest shear rigidity, moderate bending rigidity, and lowest surface smoothness & frictional values, finally showing best total hand values and higher gloss than the other two woven structures. A muslin test garment allows one to check thebecomingness of a style and to make the needed ·alterations before the ac­ tual garment is cut from the fabric. Muslin The muslin fabric selected should be firmly woven and similar in weight to the fabric which will be used for the garment. It need not be preshrunk. Other fabric choices in plain color, besides muslin, are broadcloth, Indian head, denim, and ticking. Before laying the pattern, press all creases from the muslin fabric and straighten it so that lengthwise and crosswise yarns lie at right angles. Laying the Pattern The body pieces, sleeve, and under collar will be used for cutting the muslin. Omit facings, pockets, and other extra pieces. Make only known and proven lengthwise alterations on the pattern at this point. Lay the pattern on the muslin fabric grain­ line as accurately as you would on a valuable fabric. Otherwise, testing in muslin will not serve its full purpose. On fitted coats and jackets increase seam allow­ ances to I inch on shoulder seam, center back seam, side seam, and other lengthwise body seams. This extra allowance is sometimes needed in fitting. Mark these new seam allowances with pencil. In cutting out the garment, cut exactly on the cutting line and cut notches outward. Marking All pattern markings are transferred to the mus­ lin. Tracing carbon or pencil may be used.
