Alphabetical List of the Society's Council Members and subsequent Board of Trustees and Centres Council

Introduction

The Council for the Society was set up in 1927. The list below gives details of everyone who has served on Council since then. As the Society has evolved the nature of the Council has changed. From July 1979 Centre Officer Chairmen became non-elected members of Council, but they do not appear on Council lists until the year 1981/2. Names entered in brackets indicate a non-elected Member of Council. Where part of the entry is in brackets the Member has served as an elected and a non-elected Member of Council. From May 1986 additional Members of Council were co-opted onto Council, either because it was felt that they could offer something as an individual, or because it was necessary to balance either the BBC or Independent Companies' representation. Co-opted members are elected for a period of one year. Periods of co-option are indicated by *.

Committee Group Chairmen and Specialist Group Chairmen are also non-elected Council Members. When the Committee Groups were first introduced in 1968 they had no Chairmen, with the exception of the first Committee Group, which was the Papers Committee. Committee Group Chairmen are listed in the Council Minutes from 1971, but as they were all Council Members, the problem of making any distinction between elected Council Members and Chairmen of Committee or Specialist Groups did not arise. It was not until the end of the 'Seventies, when the facility to co-opt was in existence that Committee Group Chairmen, and later Specialist Group Chairmen were voted in who were not elected Council Members.

In June 2007 Council was replaced with a board of Trustees and an Advisory Council. The Advisory Council ran until 2012 when it was replaced with the Centres Council.
