A FAREWELL NOTE FROM FATHER WRATKOWSKI One of my favorite sayings of John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890), an Anglican convert to the faith, goes like this: “Time is short, eternity long.” As is the case for every person, a priest’s life is full of meetings and partings. At times like this, I find myself pondering the quotation from Newman, thinking about how fast the last three years have gone. My heart is full of grati- tude for this assignment, as I have discovered this parish to be a place where the Lord is loved, the are appreciated, and the priests are esteemed. I can say that my experience at reflects the experience of the sent out by in the tenth chapter of Luke’s , which is also the passage proclaimed in the rite of of a home by a priest: After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” What we notice first is that the harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. The work has indeed been abundant here! Let us per- severe in our prayer that the Lord gives those he calls the ears to hear and the grace to respond to his invitation. I am grateful that Fr. , one of those who have responded “yes” to the Lord, is returning here where he was our teaching parish seminarian. When speaking with him the last couple weeks, you can see the excitement in his eyes, which reflects the love he already has for this parish and school community. A second way I have experienced the passage from Luke is your welcome of me, the priest sent by the Lord through the Archbish- op. It is no small thing to welcome another new priest, to spend time getting to know him, and to invite him over to your homes for a meal. I am grateful to have benefited from your kindness in this regard, and I greatly appreciate your friendship. Third, we notice in Luke’s passage that the Lord sends out the disciples two by two. At Saint Joseph, I am so grateful for the gift of being sent “two by two” with the pastor, Fr. Creagan. Never have I seen such generous service and selflessness on a daily basis! Our sharing of parish ministry and the fraternity of daily life will be missed, but I look forward to the ways our friendship will grow even while physically apart. Likewise, I would also like to extend a word of appreciation for the staff at St. Joseph Parish and School, for all the hard work, the camaraderie, and the memories of serving the Lord together. Leaving, of course, brings sadness, yet it also provides the occasion for rooting ourselves deeper in the Lord and the graces he offers through the present circumstances. When a priest is given a new assignment, the Lord provides an opportunity of spiritual pruning so that we might bear greater and more abundant fruit. Such an occasion also reminds us that while the priest plays a special role in our faith, he is not the end goal. Rather, the priest is a bridge to the One High Priest, Jesus Christ. By keeping our eyes fixed on Je- sus, we have greater assurance of reaching our end goal, eternal union with him. In that timelessness, the time of our separation will seem only a blip compared to the length of eternity. May God bless you, Fr. Timothy Wratkowski

FROM THE PASTOR Thank you, Father Wratkowski! I want to offer my gratitude to Father Wratkowski for his excellent service to our parish. We are certainly sad to see him go, yet we recognize the greater needs of the Archdiocese and the blessing that he has been to us for the last 3 years. This past week the parish staff presented him with a gift on behalf of the parish. The gift is a hand carved statue of St. John Vianney, patron of parish priests and co- patron of this archdiocese. The statue is a copy of the one in our adoration chapel! The accomplishments of Father Wratkowski over the past 3 years could actually fill several bulletins! I will just mention a few: 1)Father Wratkowski blessed us with wonderful preaching and teaching that is rooted in his deep prayer life and study. Many times I asked him “what are you preaching on this weekend? “ He has also blessed so many with faithful celebration of the sacraments and many hours spent in the confessional. The St. John Vianney statue is important as that great saint also spent countless hours in confession. 2) Father assisted me and our parish during the challenging times of the pandemic. The final public mass before the stay at omeh order was on 18. On March 19th Father Wratkowski had masses live streamed from the rectory chapel using a cell phone and Facebook! He also helped to spearhead the technology upgrades with Dennis Pfab that brought the wonderful video system we enjoy today. He also worked tirelessly to help make the sacraments accessible during this time of the ‘stay at home’. 3) Father led the parish in 2019 for 3 months as “temporary administrator”. Many will remember I was sent to Afghanistan on a short notice deployment for the Army. I was in a combat zone and traveled frequently to remote FOBS/ forward operating bases with some occasional ‘fireworks’. I was not always able to be in regular communication with him. Father Wratkowski did a su- perb leading the parish during these months and during a period of great stress. He made decisions as I would have and worked well with staff, trustees and volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. 4) He has touched many through his work in the school, high school youth group, RCIA, wedding preparation and many who have come to him for counsel. I am grateful to have served with him and I know we have all been blessed by his faithfulness and presence. He is a priest of great wisdom and maturity. Let us pray for him as he begins his new assignment at Holy Name in Medina. St. Joseph, pray for us! Fr Creagan
