Charles Menard of Thibodaux said Mass at the home of Alexis Duplantis, near the present site of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. On November 9, 1864, Archbishop Odin of New Orleans officially recognized the area as a church parish, naming Fr. Jean Marie Joseph Denece its first resident pastor. Soon after that, Fr. Denece took up residence at the home of Omar Babin, a few miles “down the bayou” from the present-day church in Chauvin. There Fr. Denece found in a pasture a humble chapel and only one cassock. Two years later, in 1866, he built the first church on property donated for that purpose and oversaw the confirmation of 102 parishioners. This first church was built on or near the site of the older, front section of the present day St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Fr. Denece remained 26 years in the area and is responsible for building the first rectory in Chauvin and a chapel in Montegut, the precursor to Sacred Heart Church. Possibly due to the devastation of the hurricane of 1893, the church at Chauvin became a mission to L’ Eglise Centralle, the church at Montegut (first called St. John the Baptist and later, Sacred Heart Church). From that time until 1948, St. Joseph Church was a mission of the Montegut church and no longer enjoyed the presence of a resident pastor. As the number of Catholic families in the Chauvin area increased, Fr. Gubler petitioned and received approval to create a new parish in Chauvin. On February 25, 1948, Archbishop Rummel signed a decree identifying St. Joseph as an independent parish. Fr. Gubler transferred from Montegut to Chauvin to live in the Rectory he had begun building. Transition from mission to parish was an easy one to make. The community had been worshipping together for many years prior to 1948. This was also the time that Our Lady of Prompt Succor Chapel on Upper Little Caillou became a mission of St. Joseph Church which was previously a mission of St. Ann Church in Bourg. 1 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory Fr. Gubler asked Archbishop Rummel that a Catholic school be built in the area because the church was now instructing 650 children in the faith. Fr. Lloyd Caballero was appointed and served as pastor of St. Joseph from 1950-1956 focusing on the opening of a Catholic School in the parish. At the beginning of his term he was given the approval to have plans drawn up for a school. Fr. Charles Pagliughi was named pastor in 1956. Two years later the doors of St. Joseph Benedictine High School were opened. The presence of a Catholic High School added to the spiritual growth of the community. To this day many of the graduates of St. Joseph are among the leaders of the Church. In 1965 under the direction of Fr. Pagliughi, the church community made a grand leap forward with the building of a spacious modern church. This was to be the seventh church for the community and the one that we worship in today. Fr. Allen Roy was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in 1966. He began with much optimism but many of the things that made it possible to run a school and pay for a new church took a downward spiral. The archdiocese of New Orleans cut its subsidy to St. Joseph High School. Louisiana pulled all state aid to non-public schools, and the oil economy, which supported the school directly and indirectly, went down. To make things worse, the rectory burned down adding to the need to build a new one at a time when parish finances were already inadequate to cover school and church debts. One program to come out of Fr. Roy’s pastorship that changed the course of St. Joseph Parish was the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair which was a culmination of all the smaller fairs in the church history. It officially got its name in 1970 and its goal was to save St. Joseph High School. Although the first two fairs were very successful financially, the decision was made to close the school in 1972. In 1972, Fr. Frederic Brunet, now Monsignor, took over as pastor of St. Joseph. He arrived when the school had just been closed and the Church had financial difficulties. Within five years the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair was able to make enough money to pay off all debts. The church community bonded together to help make the fair the success that it was. With God’s grace we were able to become debt free as a parish. The profits of the fair continue to benefit St. Joseph today and into the future. With the success of the fair the church was able to focus on Religious Education, Social Ministries, and the many different programs to help the people of St. Joseph and the bayou community. Sr. Rene Loubere and Sr. Diane Poynot, both nurses were brought into our church community in 1981 to help serve the health needs of the people of the bayou who were sick and shut in. For over 40 years under the pastorship of Monsignor Brunet, St. Joseph continued to grow as a strong Christian community. He remained pastor of St. Joseph until his retirement in June of 2014. We give thanks for the many pastors who have served St. Joseph Church throughout the years, for the many associate pastors who have come and gone, and all who have left their mark of faith on our parish. 2 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory We welcome our new Pastor, Fr. The Pastoral Council helps the pastor foster pastoral activity; it investigates and ponders all those things which pertain to pastoral works of the parish, and then proposes practical solution to them.
