Charles Menard of Thibodaux said Mass at the home of Alexis Duplantis, near the present site of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. On November 9, 1864, Archbishop Odin of New Orleans officially recognized the area as a church parish, naming Fr. Jean Marie Joseph Denece its first resident pastor. Soon after that, Fr. Denece took up residence at the home of Omar Babin, a few miles “down the bayou” from the present-day church in Chauvin. There Fr. Denece found in a pasture a humble chapel and only one cassock. Two years later, in 1866, he built the first church on property donated for that purpose and oversaw the confirmation of 102 parishioners. This first church was built on or near the site of the older, front section of the present day St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Fr. Denece remained 26 years in the area and is responsible for building the first rectory in Chauvin and a chapel in Montegut, the precursor to Sacred Heart Church. Possibly due to the devastation of the hurricane of 1893, the church at Chauvin became a mission to L’ Eglise Centralle, the church at Montegut (first called St. John the Baptist and later, Sacred Heart Church). From that time until 1948, St. Joseph Church was a mission of the Montegut church and no longer enjoyed the presence of a resident pastor. As the number of Catholic families in the Chauvin area increased, Fr. Gubler petitioned and received approval to create a new parish in Chauvin. On February 25, 1948, Archbishop Rummel signed a decree identifying St. Joseph as an independent parish. Fr. Gubler transferred from Montegut to Chauvin to live in the Rectory he had begun building. Transition from mission to parish was an easy one to make. The community had been worshipping together for many years prior to 1948. This was also the time that Our Lady of Prompt Succor Chapel on Upper Little Caillou became a mission of St. Joseph Church which was previously a mission of St. Ann Church in Bourg. 1 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory Fr. Gubler asked Archbishop Rummel that a Catholic school be built in the area because the church was now instructing 650 children in the faith. Fr. Lloyd Caballero was appointed and served as pastor of St. Joseph from 1950-1956 focusing on the opening of a Catholic School in the parish. At the beginning of his term he was given the approval to have plans drawn up for a school. Fr. Charles Pagliughi was named pastor in 1956. Two years later the doors of St. Joseph Benedictine High School were opened. The presence of a Catholic High School added to the spiritual growth of the community. To this day many of the graduates of St. Joseph are among the leaders of the Church. In 1965 under the direction of Fr. Pagliughi, the church community made a grand leap forward with the building of a spacious modern church. This was to be the seventh church for the community and the one that we worship in today. Fr. Allen Roy was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in 1966. He began with much optimism but many of the things that made it possible to run a school and pay for a new church took a downward spiral. The archdiocese of New Orleans cut its subsidy to St. Joseph High School. Louisiana pulled all state aid to non-public schools, and the oil economy, which supported the school directly and indirectly, went down. To make things worse, the rectory burned down adding to the need to build a new one at a time when parish finances were already inadequate to cover school and church debts. One program to come out of Fr. Roy’s pastorship that changed the course of St. Joseph Parish was the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair which was a culmination of all the smaller fairs in the church history. It officially got its name in 1970 and its goal was to save St. Joseph High School. Although the first two fairs were very successful financially, the decision was made to close the school in 1972. In 1972, Fr. Frederic Brunet, now Monsignor, took over as pastor of St. Joseph. He arrived when the school had just been closed and the Church had financial difficulties. Within five years the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair was able to make enough money to pay off all debts. The church community bonded together to help make the fair the success that it was. With God’s grace we were able to become debt free as a parish. The profits of the fair continue to benefit St. Joseph today and into the future. With the success of the fair the church was able to focus on Religious Education, Social Ministries, and the many different programs to help the people of St. Joseph and the bayou community. Sr. Rene Loubere and Sr. Diane Poynot, both nurses were brought into our church community in 1981 to help serve the health needs of the people of the bayou who were sick and shut in. For over 40 years under the pastorship of Monsignor Brunet, St. Joseph continued to grow as a strong Christian community. He remained pastor of St. Joseph until his retirement in June of 2014. We give thanks for the many pastors who have served St. Joseph Church throughout the years, for the many associate pastors who have come and gone, and all who have left their mark of faith on our parish. 2 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory We welcome our new Pastor, Fr. Baby ‘Philip’ Kuruvilla. Our church community looks forward to working with him and serving our church in doing God’s work. Through the years our people have been battered by the storms of life, both physical and spiritual. They have been strengthened by the presence and the work of St. Joseph Church. It stands as a beacon of light and a constant reminder of the faith of our fathers, the one true church established by Christ 2000 years ago. The letter, Patris Corde (“a Father’s heart”) was released on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. It can be found here: http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_letters/documents/papa-francesco-lettera- ap_20201208_patris-corde.html The Diocese of Sacramento is observing this Year in many ways. Journey with Joseph Pilgrimage We will soon be announcing Saint Joseph pilgrimage sites across the Diocese. Indulgence The Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree on December 8, 2020, formally announcing the decision of Pope Francis to celebrate the Year of Saint Joseph through December 8, 2021. Special opportunities to receive a plenary indulgence were also included, subject to the usual conditions: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and total detachment to all sin, including venial sin. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Holy See made provision in its decree that persons who are currently unable to go to Mass or confession because of public health restrictions may defer reception of those two sacraments until they are able to do so. Those who are sick, suffering, or homebound may also receive the plenary indulgence by fulfilling as much as they are able and by offering their sorrows and sufferings to God through Saint Joseph, consoler of the sick and patron saint for receiving a good death.

  • St Joseph As Dreamer and Disciple: the Gospels View by Arthur E
St Joseph as Dreamer and Disciple: The Gospels View By Arthur E. Zannoni Pre Note: On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed in an Apostolic Letter entitled “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Also, the Church celebrates the Solemnity (feast) of St. Joseph liturgically on March 19. Thus, the following reflection is offered on Joseph's biblical roots, the spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. What the Gospels Reveal About St. Joseph The only source we have for St. Joseph is the gospels. He is mentioned sixteen times in three of the four gospels. Matthew mentions him eight times, Luke seven times, and John once. This singular reference to Joseph in John's gospel (6:41-42) only refers to Joseph as the father of Jesus. The Portrayal of Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew In Matthew's gospel's infancy narrative, the first time Joseph is mentioned is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17), and he is called the husband of Mary (1:16). The second time Joseph is referred to as betrothed to Mary. They are engaged, “but before they lived together, she [Mary] was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (1:18). Mary and Joseph are between two stages of ancient Jewish marriage. The first is the formal consent in the home of the father of the bride. The second, made later, is the transfer of the bride to the house of the groom. In the Jewish legal view, Mary and Joseph's betrothal was considered a legally contracted marriage, completed before they cohabitated.

  • Saint Joseph
SSAINT JJOSEPH St. Peter Catholic Church Faith Fact March 2017 By Fr. William Saunders St. Joseph truly is the silent figure of the New Testament. For instance, the Gospel does not record one spoken verse for St. Joseph. Nevertheless, what this great saint did in his life for God speaks volumes. To appreciate him and his role in salvation, we need to glean the Gospels. St. Joseph was “of the house and lineage of David” (Lk 2:4). Because of this ancestry, St. Joseph is the linkage between the old covenant made with Abraham and Moses, and the new, perfect and everlasting covenant which will be made through the blood of Jesus. He brings to a close the notion of the Patriarch’s promised land and King David’s established kingdom, and prepares the way for Jesus, the Messiah, who will establish the new kingdom of God and the new Promised Land—not a kingdom of land, castles and armies, but one that is within oneself of shared life with the Lord, lived now and fulfilled in heaven. St. Matthew identifies Joseph was “an upright man.” The original text uses the word just or righteous, which better reflects that he lived by God’s standard, keeping the commandments and emulating God’s love. St. Joseph first appears in the Gospel infancy narratives. While St. Luke’s Gospel focuses on the annunciation to Mary, St. Matthew’s Gospel focuses on St. Joseph. Here St. Joseph was engaged to Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant. Remember that in Jewish society, when a couple became formally engaged declaring their intent before two witnesses, they were considered married as husband and wife.
