The earliest actual record of church activity in the Chauvin area dates to June 1842 when Fr. Charles Menard of Thibodaux said at the home of Alexis Duplantis, near the present site of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. On November 9, 1864, Odin of New Orleans officially recognized the area as a church parish, naming Fr. Jean Marie Joseph Denece its first resident pastor. Soon after that, Fr. Denece took up residence at the home of Omar Babin, a few miles “down the bayou” from the present-day church in Chauvin. There Fr. Denece found in a pasture a humble chapel and only one cassock. Two years later, in 1866, he built the first church on property donated for that purpose and oversaw the of 102 parishioners. This first church was built on or near the site of the older, front section of the present day St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Fr. Denece remained 26 years in the area and is responsible for building the first rectory in Chauvin and a chapel in Montegut, the precursor to Sacred Heart Church. Possibly due to the devastation of the hurricane of 1893, the church at Chauvin became a mission to L’ Eglise Centralle, the church at Montegut (first called St. and later, Sacred Heart Church). From that time until 1948, St. Joseph Church was a mission of the Montegut church and no longer enjoyed the presence of a resident pastor. As the number of Catholic families in the Chauvin area increased, Fr. Gubler petitioned and received approval to create a new parish in Chauvin. On February 25, 1948, Archbishop Rummel signed a decree identifying St. Joseph as an independent parish. Fr. Gubler transferred from Montegut to Chauvin to live in the Rectory he had begun building. Transition from mission to parish was an easy one to make. The community had been worshipping together for many years prior to 1948. This was also the time that Our Lady of Prompt Succor Chapel on Upper Little Caillou became a mission of St. Joseph Church which was previously a mission of St. Ann Church in Bourg.

Fr. Gubler asked Archbishop Rummel that a be built in the area because the church was now instructing 650 children in the faith. Fr. Lloyd Caballero was appointed and served as pastor of St. Joseph from 1950-1956 focusing on the opening of a Catholic School in the parish. At the beginning of his term he was given the approval to have plans drawn up for a school. Fr. Charles Pagliughi was named pastor in 1956. Two years later the doors of St. Joseph Benedictine High School were opened. The presence of a Catholic High School added to the spiritual growth of the community. To this day many of the graduates of St. Joseph are among the leaders of the Church. In 1965 under the direction of Fr. Pagliughi, the church community made a grand leap forward with the building of a spacious modern church. This was to be the seventh church for the community and the one that we worship in today. Fr. Allen Roy was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in 1966. He began with much optimism but many of the things that made it possible to run a school and pay for a new church took a downward spiral. The archdiocese of New Orleans cut its subsidy to St. Joseph High School. Louisiana pulled all state aid to non-public schools, and the oil economy, which supported the school directly and indirectly, went down. To make things worse, the rectory burned down adding to the need to build a new one at a time when parish finances were already inadequate to cover school and church debts. One program to come out of Fr. Roy’s pastorship that changed the course of St. Joseph Parish was the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair which was a culmination of all the smaller fairs in the church history. It officially got its name in 1970 and its goal was to save St. Joseph High School. Although the first two fairs were very successful financially, the decision was made to close the school in 1972. In 1972, Fr. Frederic Brunet, now Monsignor, took over as pastor of St. Joseph. He arrived when the school had just been closed and the Church had financial difficulties. Within five years the Lagniappe on the Bayou Fair was able to make enough money to pay off all debts. The church community bonded together to help make the fair the success that it was. With God’s grace we were able to become debt free as a parish. The profits of the fair continue to benefit St. Joseph today and into the future. With the success of the fair the church was able to focus on Religious Education, Social Ministries, and the many different programs to help the people of St. Joseph and the bayou community. Sr. Rene Loubere and Sr. Diane Poynot, both nurses were brought into our church community in 1981 to help serve the health needs of the people of the bayou who were sick and shut in. For over 40 years under the pastorship of Monsignor Brunet, St. Joseph continued to grow as a strong Christian community. He remained pastor of St. Joseph until his retirement in June of 2014. We give thanks for the many pastors who have served St. Joseph Church throughout the years, for the many associate pastors who have come and gone, and all who have left their mark of faith on our parish.

5 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory The St. Joseph Pastoral Council The St. Joseph Pastoral Council is a consultative pastoral body that strives to discern the movement of the Holy Spirit among God’s people in the parish. The Pastoral Council helps the pastor foster pastoral activity; it investigates and ponders all those things which pertain to pastoral works of the parish, and then proposes practical solution to them. It is essential that Council meetings occur in the context of prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit, so that at all times the common good will prevail. Specifically, the Parish Pastoral Council’s purpose is to enhance the process of: pastoral planning, developing pastoral programs, improving pastoral services, evaluating the pastoral effectiveness of various programs and services. Although the Council is not a body which makes binding decisions, the recommendations of the Pastoral Council are to be taken seriously when grounded in prayer, discernment, and communal wisdom. The pastor is responsible for the final approval of Council recommendations concerning pastoral planning, programs, and services for the parish, as well as for their implementation. While the pastor is not obliged to follow the recommendations of the Parish Pastoral Council, it is understood that he ought to do so unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. If there is such a reason, the pastor should share this with the Council. Present Members Rev. Baby “Philip” Kuruvilla (ex efficio) Timmy Lyons Deacon Gary Lapeyrouse (ex efficio) Leland Neil Mona Blanchard Sharon Picou Donald Tivet Mickie Theriot Curtis Constrantiche Jamie Robichaux Gary Dupre Tara Stringer The St. Joseph Finance Council The St. Joseph Finance Council works closely with the pastor, who is accountable to the diocesan bishop for the administration and stewardship of the temporal goods of the parish. The pastor has the responsibility for parish financial and temporal management. The Parish Finance Council is a consultative body that assists the pastor in meeting these obligations. While the Parish Finance Council does not have decision making authority, consultation is at the heart of the decision- making process – sharing information, listening, contributing to the discussion, and promoting consensus.

6 St. Joseph Parish Guide Book & Directory

Canon law states that the pastor is obligated to consult the Finance Council on certain matters. Although the pastor is not obliged to follow the recommendations of the Finance Council, the pastor should not act against such advice, especially when there is consensus, unless there is an overriding reason. When acting contrary to its recommendations, the pastor should provide an explanation to the Finance Council regarding the reasons for his decision. The Council members should have a love for the Church and its mission and develop a thorough understanding of the parish’s mission, goals, people, and resources. Present Members Rev. HURRICANE PRAYER “O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your people. The raging Sea of obeyed your orders and became calm again. We believe that you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in a dangerous locality subjected to the treats of violent wind and flooding. The Gulf of , like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its inactivity, overstep its traditional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. “During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving God, and ask you to keep us from all harm. The memories of past hurricanes are still so vivid. We have deep wounds from their destruction that still needs your healing power. “O Virgin Mother, Star of the Sea, we ask you to plead with your Son for us so that we will be spared from the disasters common to our area. In a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach the heavenly where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.” HOW TO PRAY THE The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles’ Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the . The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel’s words announcing Christ’s birth and Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary center on the events of Christ’s life. There are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and–added by Pope John Paul II in 2002–the Luminous. The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ’s spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group. The Five Joyful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on the Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays of : 1. The 2. The Visitation 3. The 4. The Presentation in the Temple 5. The The Five Luminous Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Thursdays: 1. The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan 2. The Wedding Feast at Cana 3. Jesus’ Proclamation of the Coming of the Kingdom of God 4. The Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist

For each of the five decades, announce the Mystery, then say the Our Father. 7. While fingering each of the ten beads of the decade, next say ten Hail Mary’s while meditating on the Mystery. Then say a Glory Be. (After finishing each decade, some say the following prayer requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.”) 8. After saying the five decades, say the “Hail, Holy Queen,” followed by this dialogue and prayer: V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by his life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
