[email protected] ANOINTING OF THE SICK: By Appointment Only Bookkeeper: Susan Calhoun [email protected] 2 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph December 27, 2020 On the last Sunday of the year, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We are here to offer all the members of our own families on the altar for God's blessing. Today's scriptures present the heads of two families, Abraham and Joseph, promptly obeying God with trusting faith. Abraham put his trusting faith in one God and obeyed His instruction to migrate to an unknown country. So, in the first reading Abraham dares to ask his God the gift of a son to begin the fulfillment of His promise to make him the patriarch of a big nation. In the second reading St. Paul tells us how Abraham came out victorious when his faith was tested by daringly accepting the challenge of sacrificing his only son Isaac. Today's gospel presents the head of the Holy Family Joseph faithfully obeying God's law given through Moses con- cerning the purification of the mother and the redeeming of the child by presenting Mary and child Jesus in the Temple. On the Feast of the only perfect Family that ever lived on this earth, all of us, as family members, need to examine ourselves and see how well we are fulfilling the grave respon- sibilities which God has placed on us. By celebrating the Sunday following Christmas as the Feast of the Holy Family, the Church encour- ages us to look to the Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph for inspiration, example and encourage- ment. They were a model family in which both parents worked hard, helped each other, understood and accepted each other, and took good care of their Child so that He might grow up not only in hu- man knowledge but also as a Child of God. Jesus brought holiness to the family of Joseph and Mary as Jesus brings holiness to us, by embracing us in His family. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (2223) gives the following advice to the parents: "Parents have the first responsibility for the educa- tion of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tender- ness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule." The CCC adds: "Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children." (2223). "Am I not a family valuable?" A young woman about to be married had come to the Rabbi for counseling. When she told the Rabbi that she hoped she would not make the same mistakes her parents had made, he pressed her to elaborate. The woman explained that each summer her wealthy parents traveled to Europe while she remained behind with a nanny. One year, when the girl was 11, the housekeeper suddenly quit just shortly before her parents' annual trip to Europe. Upset that their vacation might be jeopardized, the parents quickly found a replacement. A few days before their de- parture, the girl noticed that her mother had wrapped the family jewels and silverware and placed them in the safe. Since this had never been done before, she asked why. Her mother explained that she could not trust the new housekeeper with the family valuables. Though certainly not intended, that insensitive remark so shocked and hurt the little girl that she never forgot it. Wasn't she a family valuable? Didn't she have more value than silver knives and silver forks? That is a question all of us could ask about our attitudes toward dependent family members, young, old or in-between, this Ho- ly Family Day. If I have ever been teaching and felt like I needed to inject an audience with something, I just witnessed it. I mean they were tired, but they were troopers for coming out and being a part of the early service. I know that you guys are excited today because it is one of those days where we will just break our New Year commitments as we begin to go off the deep end. I mean we will be eating really well today, since it is Easter, and now we are hosed. It just goes awry from here on. So I hope you have a good Easter Sunday with good fellowship. And I hope that this morning you will sense something from God’s word that you can take away from the message that will be an encouragement to you. Let me start off with a story. Several years ago, I was serving as an associate pastor in Conway, Arkansas at Celebration Church. It was a new church, and I was there on staff. I came in one Sunday morning, and I saw my bride getting a cup of coffee. So I went up behind her and began to give her a massage on her shoulders. But then she turned around, and lo and behold, it wasn’t my wife! I was horrified in that moment. What made it even worse was she was a first time guest to our church and I never saw that lady again.

II) Some personal traits: A) Apollos is described as eloquent. The primary meaning of this is “learned” or very educated; possessing a storehouse of words and a powerful mind. B) He was mighty in the Scriptures. This would seem to imply that Apollos was skilled at using the Old Testament to make arguments religiously. He was capable of convincing people that Jesus is the Christ (see verse 28). C) Apollos was fervent in spirit (v.25).     St Joseph as Dreamer and Disciple: The Gospels View By Arthur E. Zannoni Pre Note: On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed in an Apostolic Letter entitled “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Also, the Church celebrates the Solemnity (feast) of St. Joseph liturgically on March 19. Thus, the following reflection is offered on Joseph's biblical roots, the spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. What the Gospels Reveal About St. Joseph The only source we have for St. Joseph is the gospels. He is mentioned sixteen times in three of the four gospels. Matthew mentions him eight times, Luke seven times, and John once. This singular reference to Joseph in John's gospel (6:41-42) only refers to Joseph as the father of Jesus. The Portrayal of Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew In Matthew's gospel's infancy narrative, the first time Joseph is mentioned is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17), and he is called the husband of Mary (1:16). The second time Joseph is referred to as betrothed to Mary. They are engaged, “but before they lived together, she [Mary] was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (1:18). Mary and Joseph are between two stages of ancient Jewish marriage. The first is the formal consent in the home of the father of the bride. The second, made later, is the transfer of the bride to the house of the groom. In the Jewish legal view, Mary and Joseph's betrothal was considered a legally contracted marriage, completed before they cohabitated.

Charles Menard of Thibodaux said Mass at the home of Alexis Duplantis, near the present site of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. On November 9, 1864, Archbishop Odin of New Orleans officially recognized the area as a church parish, naming Fr. Jean Marie Joseph Denece its first resident pastor. Soon after that, Fr. Denece took up residence at the home of Omar Babin, a few miles “down the bayou” from the present-day church in Chauvin. There Fr. Denece found in a pasture a humble chapel and only one cassock. Two years later, in 1866, he built the first church on property donated for that purpose and oversaw the confirmation of 102 parishioners. This first church was built on or near the site of the older, front section of the present day St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Fr. Denece remained 26 years in the area and is responsible for building the first rectory in Chauvin and a chapel in Montegut, the precursor to Sacred Heart Church.
