They were sent two by two by the Lord Jesus Christ to go before Him into the cities He would visit (Luke 10:1). With the Descent of the Holy Spirit the Seventy Apostles preached in various lands. Some accompanied the Twelve Apostles, like the holy Evangelists Mark and Luke, or Saint Paul’s companion Timothy, or Prochorus,the disciple of the holy Evangelist John the Theologian, and others. Many of them were thrown into prison for Christ, and many received the crown of martyrdom. There are two more Apostles of the Seventy: Saint Cephas, to whom the Lord appeared after the Resurrection (1 Cor. 15:5-6), and Simeon, called Niger (Acts 13:1). They also were glorified by apostolic preaching. There are discrepancies and errors in some lists of the Seventy Apostles. In a list attributed to Saint Dorotheus of Tyre (June 5) some names are repeated (Rodion, or Herodion, Apollos, Tychicus, Aristarchus), while others are omitted (Timothy, Titus, Epaphras, Archippus, Aquila, Olympas). Saint Demetrius of Rostov consulted the Holy Scripture, the traditions passed down by the Fathers, and the accounts of trustworthy historians when he attempted to correct the mistakes and uncertainties in the list in compiling his collection of Lives of the Saints. The Church in particular venerates and praises the Seventy Apostles because they taught us to honor the Trinity One in Essence and Undivided. In the ninth century Saint Joseph the Hymnographer composed the Canon for the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles of Christ.     DIOCESE OF SACRAMENTO Office of Worship 2110 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818 - 916-733-0211 - [email protected] Year of Saint Joseph On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in 2020, Pope Francis has released an apostolic letter about Saint Joseph and declared a “Year of St. Joseph” from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The letter, Patris Corde (“a Father’s heart”) was released on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. Journey with Joseph Pilgrimage We will soon be announcing Saint Joseph pilgrimage sites across the Diocese. Indulgence The Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree on December 8, 2020, formally announcing the decision of Pope Francis to celebrate the Year of Saint Joseph through December 8, 2021. Special opportunities to receive a plenary indulgence were also included, subject to the usual conditions: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and total detachment to all sin, including venial sin. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Holy See made provision in its decree that persons who are currently unable to go to Mass or confession because of public health restrictions may defer reception of those two sacraments until they are able to do so. Those who are sick, suffering, or homebound may also receive the plenary indulgence by fulfilling as much as they are able and by offering their sorrows and sufferings to God through Saint Joseph, consoler of the sick and patron saint for receiving a good death.

Titus 2:7 "…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:14 "Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work." Titus 3:1 "The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works." Titus 3:8 "And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful." Titus 3:14 "One of the problems in the Cretan church is that they had assimilated their ideas about Jesus, the Christian God, to their ideas about their Greek gods…specifically Zeus, their chief god. Cretan people claimed that Zeus was born on their island and they loved to tell stories and mythologies about Zeus's underhanded character. He would seduce women and lie to get his way. So, Paul wants to very clear: the God revealed through Jesus is totally different than Zeus. His basic character are faithfulness and truth.     The Supremacy of Christ The Gospel Encourages Participation Colossians 4:7-18 Introduction Today is our final message on the letter to the Colossians and the Supremacy of Christ. As we learned Colossae was a city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), situated in the Lycus River valley about 110 miles south-east of Ephesus. It was a prominent city in classical Greek times because of its importance in producing dyed wool and its location on the trade route between Ephesus and the East. It was close to two other cities, Hierapolis and Laodicea, both mentioned in the New Testament. These two cities gradually eclipsed Colossae, and by the time Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians, it was a small and relatively unimportant city. Paul didn’t found the Colossian church, it was one of the churches evangelized by Epaphras, a disciple of Paul's (Col.4.12-13). Epaphras had become alarmed about a cult that was developing in the Colossian church, and since Paul was imprisoned in Rome, he went there to consult with him. Paul agreed the situation was serious and decided to write a letter to the Colossians. Paul begins his letter by thanking God for the Colossians and their decision to become followers of Christ. He commends them for receiving the “gospel” (the good news that Jesus is the Messiah and that through His death, we can be forgiven and reconciled to God. Paul also rejoices that the “gospel” is changing their lives. By accepting Jesus and receiving Eternal Life, the Holy Spirit has given them a sense of inner peace and new hope for their lives.

    Open Theology 2020; 6: 646–660 Women and Gender in the Bible and the Biblical World Andrea Hartmann* Junia – A Woman Lost in Translation: The Name IOYNIAN in Romans 16:7 and its History of Interpretation https://doi.org/10.1515/opth-2020-0138 received June 30, 2020; accepted October 27, 2020 Abstract: The name of the second person greeted in Romans 16:7 is given as IOYNIAN, a form whose gramma- tical gender could be either feminine or masculine which leads to the question: Is it Junia or Junias – awomanor aman– who is greeted alongside Andronicus as “outstanding among the apostles?” This article highlights early influential answers to this question in the history of interpretation (John Chrysostom’scommentary,thedisciple- ship list of Pseudo-Epiphanius, Luther’s translation, and Calvin’s interpretation) showing that societal percep- tions of women’s roles were a factor in how they interpreted IOYNIAN. The article then summarises the last 150 years of interpretation history which saw (a) the disappearance of Junia from the text and from scholarly discussion due to the impact of the short-from hypothesis in the nineteenth century, (b) the challenge to this male interpretation in connection with second wave feminism, and (c) the restoration of the female reading in the ensuing debate. Bringing together the main lines of the argument, it will be shown that there is only one reading supported by the evidence, the female reading which throughout the centuries was the more difficult reading in light of the church’sandsociety’s perception of women’s
