2016 ALIGNED GIVING STRATEGY STRATEGY 1

This document is connected to the Solidaire Network Member Brief and is a Solidaire Member-Only Document

There are currently over 50 organizations serving on various tables within the M4BL and at least 100 in the M4BL national ecosystem. The list of organizations at the local, state and national levels is growing daily and will be updated for members as the Solidaire becomes aware of additional organizations. For our Year 1, $350,000/year pledge goal, we recommend members focus their funding to stabilize 15 organizations providing key leadership within the M4BL and that meet the following criteria:

1. Organizations with predominantly Black Board, executive leadership, staff leadership and membership/leadership base; 2. Organizations whose primary purpose is explicitly stated in their mission to work to build power with and for the Black community; 3. Organizations with budget sizes under $2M. We believe that given the $350,000 goal for this strategy, our members can make a unique contribution by beginning to build the major donor base of some of the smaller organizations leading in the ecosystem.

While we recommend priority funding the 15 organizations described in this document, grants made to any organization in the M4BL ecosystem (see below) will be counted toward this option pledge goal. Recommended organizations are listed in alphabetical order. This prioritization is only intended to inform the goal within this $350,000 strategy as part of the Solidaire $1M Aligned Giving Program. 1. Baltimore Bloc • Baltimore, MD | Facebook Baltimore Bloc is a grassroots collective of friends, families & neighborhoods united to rebuild communities & organize for justice.

2. Black Alliance for Just Immigration • Brooklyn, NY | Facebook BAJI believes that a thriving multi-racial democracy requires racial, social and economic justice for all. African Americans and black immigrants are stronger together and we can win by becoming leaders in the fight against structural racism and systemic discrimination. BAJI was formed to bring Black voices together to advocate for equality and justice in our laws and our communities.

3. Network • 38 Chapters | Facebook BLMN is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life. #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after ’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our dehumanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.

4. BOLD [Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity] • Miami, FL BOLD is a national Leadership Training Program designed to help rebuild Black (African-American, Caribbean, African, Afro-Latino) social justice infrastructure in order to organize Black communities more effectively and re-center Black leadership in the U.S. social justice movement.

5. Black Youth Project 100 [BYP100] • Chicago, IL | Facebook BYP100 is a national activist member-based organization of Black 18-35 year olds, dedicated to creating justice and freedom for all Black people. We do this through building a base focused on transformative leadership development, direct action organizing, advocacy and education using a Black queer feminist lens.

Blackbird • Oakland, CA | Facebook Blackbird formed organically in the intensity of Ferguson, Missouri, during the first 100 days after Michael Brown’s death. As early as the second week of protests, Blackbird helped create the conditions for collaboration among a crowded (yet divided) field of organizations and emerging leaders through the use of a coordination table. Our team helped establish the importance of developing collaborative spaces as the center of organizing during and after crisis moments and helped match intense protests at sites of decision making with methodical base building in working class Black communities.

7. BlackOUT Collective • Oakland, CA | Facebook BlackOUT is a full service Black Direct Action collective, which provides on the ground support, training and the opportunity for deep space visioning in communities that prioritize the liberation of Black people.

8. Dignity and Power Now • Los Angeles, CA | Facebook DPN is a grassroots organization based in Los Angeles that fights for the dignity and power of incarcerated people, their families, and communities. In doing so DPN wages a fight for everyone because the prison industrial complex forms an imaginative limit on everyone’s capacity to envision freedom and liberation.

9. Freedom Inc. • Madison, WI | Facebook Freedom, Inc. engages low- to no-income communities of color in Dane County, WI. We work to end violence against people of color, women, those that non-traditionally gender identify, and our youth, to promote healthy lifestyle. We create healthy communities by campaigning against the root causes of violence, creating new definitions and solutions of identity and resiliency, and empowering all community members as agents of change.

10. Million Hoodies Movement for Justice • New York, NY - Nat’l Network | Facebook Founded in 2012, Million Hoodies Movement for Justice is a racial justice membership organization confronting anti-black racism and systemic violence. Our mission is to build next generation human rights leaders to end mass criminalization and gun violence through grassroots organizing, advocacy, and education. We are building a racial justice movement committed to creating a democracy where all Black and Brown people have social, political, cultural, and economic freedom and the right to be safe.

Organization for Black Struggle • St. Louis, MO | Facebook The Organization for Black Struggle was founded in 1980 by activists, students, union organizers and other community members in order to fill a vacuum left by the assaults on the Black Power Movement. Our vision is to contribute to the creation of a society free of all forms of exploitation and oppression. Our mission is to build a movement that fights for political empowerment, economic justice and the cultural dignity of the African-American community, especially the Black working class.

12. Project South • Atlanta, GA | Facebook Project South is a Southern-based leadership development organization that creates spaces for movement building. We work with communities pushed forward by the struggle– to strengthen leadership and to provide popular political and economic education for personal and social transformation. We build relationships with organizations and networks across the US and global South to inform our local work and to engage in bottom-up movement building for social and economic justice.

13. Southerners on New Ground [SONG] • Atlanta, GA | Facebook SONG believes all our identities, issues and lives are connected across race, class, culture, gender and sexuality. SONG is a membership-based, Southern regional organization made up of working class, people of color, immigrants, and rural LGBTQ people. We vision a world where the 3rd shift factory worker and the drag queen at the bar down the block see their lives as connected and are working together for liberation.

14. Transgender Gender-Variant Intersex Justice Project [TGIJP] • San Francisco, CA TGI Justice Project is a group of transgender, gender variant and intersex people— inside and outside of prisons, jails and detention centers—creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom. We work in collaboration with others to forge a culture of resistance and resilience to strengthen us for the fight against human rights abuses, imprisonment, police violence, racism, poverty, and societal pressures. We seek to create a world rooted in self- determination, freedom of expression, and gender justice. Our members are low income transgender women of color and our families who are in prison, formerly incarcerated, or targeted by the police.

15. UndocuBlack Network • Los Angeles, CA | Facebook A first-of-its kind space for black undocumented folks to heal, organize and be empowered by each other.

Baltimore Bloc is a grassroots collective of friends, families & neighborhoods united to rebuild communities and organize for justice. Currently they have more people and communities trying to join or form sectors of BLOC specific to their area in Baltimore than they have capacity to work with.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $850,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: • Establish a policy and research office based in DC, which educates policymakers, advocates, academics, and other stakeholders about the implications of legislative proposals on Black immigrants. • Build transnational relationships with those deported from the US, which may include establishing an international office. • Establish an initiative that organizes and develops the leadership of Black immigrants facing deportation as a result of criminal convictions. • Pilot restorative justice programs within schools, community centers, religious institutions, and youth organizations that can be modeled by cities as an alternative to uniformed policing and school security in targeted neighborhoods. • Develop our international organizing infrastructure with staff in 2 -3 key countries where Black migrants and asylum seekers are experiencing injustice.

BOLD is a national Leadership Training Program designed to help rebuild Black (African-American, Caribbean, African, Afro-Latino) social justice infrastructure in order to organize Black communities more effectively and re-center Black leadership in the U.S. social justice movement.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: Sustaining and expanding our current Director’s Training: Over the next five years, this initiative will build the leadership skills, somatic awareness, base-building capacity, political clarity, and organizing effectiveness of at least 175 directors/lead organizers and their organizations (as a contribution towards building an integrated Black organizing infrastructure in the areas of employment rights, ending mass incarceration, housing and land rights, and education).

Relaunching BOLD’s Amandla! New Organizer training: An integral aspect of rebuilding Black social justice infrastructure requires developing competent Black organizers with the skills, analysis and relationships to organize Black communities effectively. Over five years, Amandla! will increase the effectiveness of at least 450 frontline organizers and deepen their skills in movement building, campaign management, organizational development, strategic communications, fundraising, political education, and transformative leadership. The overall approach for the program will be guided by Transformative Organizing (TO) principles that integrate personal transformation and social transformation. To be eligible, an organizer must be working at one of the organizations whose Director is a BOLD alum.

Strengthening BOLD’s organizational infrastructure: Including (1) building a digital alumni platform; (2) developing and launching a communications and fundraising plan that advances the work of BOLD and its alumni; (3) Growing the BOLD trainer team pipeline via somatic teacher training and other training to scale up our efforts nationally and deepen regionally.

Fully implemented, the programs generate the scaffolding to build effective Black organizations which develop community leaders, somatic practitioners, political education, political leaders, build power, and create strategic campaigns for equity.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $1,500,200 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: Blackbird can build out it’s offerings in the fields of communications, organizing, and policy/advocacy by training leaders in every region of the country, expanding the number of communities we provide direct support to, launching our political education web and app based platform, providing a focus on both international organizing and incubation of disruptive leadership through a fellows program. This also means robust communications infrastructure for Black organizing on a scale that meets our community’s needs. Lastly, five years of support would provide a runway for Blackbird to focus on developing a far-reaching transformational strategy for long-term black organizing and black grassroots power.

The BlackOUT Collective is a full service Black direct action organization that provides on-the- ground support, training, and deep space visioning in communities that prioritize the liberation of Black people. BOC is addressing “anti-Blackness” and views direct action as a critical movement strategy to achieve this outcome, both in terms of internalized oppression, as well as for historic and contemporary manifestations of white supremacy. Civil disobedience and direct action have a long legacy in Black communities. Our approach is to decolonize direct action and re-center on our powerful ancestral knowledge and courage of African women, men, and children that have been fighting back for generations. Africans jumped from slave ships to resist the brutality of chattel slavery, shipyard workers who shut down the transport of weapons to supply warships, the legacies of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the youth uprisings in Soweto as part of the anti-apartheid movement are some examples of the long legacy of civil disobedience, disruption, and direct action within Black communities across the African/Black diaspora. By using direct action training, coaching, and leadership development as a vehicle, we are able to support grassroots organizations in crafting strategies that win policy reform. In addition, we train new formations comprised of politicized and engaged Black people in designing and implementing direct action strategy.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $500,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: In the next 5 years we aim to train 10,000 Black people to be direct action practitioners and strategists as well as train 300 Black Direct Action Trainers. We hope to support actions across the county and strengthen cross movement actions. We hope to host a yearly action and vision camp. We hope to develop manuals and tools via a web series and other social media tools.

Dignity and Power Now is a grassroots civil and human rights organization whose goal is to end mass incarceration and state violence in Los Angeles, which is home to the largest jail system in the world. DPN fights for the dignity and power of incarcerated people, their families, and communities. In doing so DPN wages a fight for everyone because the prison industrial complex forms an imaginative limit on everyone’s capacity to envision freedom and liberation.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Effective and legally empowered civilian oversight of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department • Stopping Jail Construction while decarcerating the County Jail • Building alternative wellness institutions for directly impacted people

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $472,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: With a steady revenue Dignity and Power Now could focus on developing the its county wide campaign to legally empower Civilian oversight. As it stands the civilian oversight commission that will monitor the department does not subpoena power which for our work, and based on the thorough research and relationship building we’ve done with other oversight commissions across the country, is non- negotiable. Winning subpoena power for our commission would require changing county charter which means a county wide ballot measure. As we currently work to deepen our organizing work in South Los Angeles we are building a foundation for this unprecedented county wide effort. A steady revenue over the next five years would give us some of the stability that we need to plan, develop, and effectively execute this uncharted body of work and make the heavy lift required to win a county wide ballot measure for directly impacted people and their loved ones in Los Angeles a real possibility. This is going to be a critical feature to move the power to leverage transparency in the hands of the Black community who is more likely to experience brutality, medical negligence while in custody, and lethal force by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

Freedom, Inc. engages low- to no-income communities of color in Dane County, WI. We create healthy communities by campaigning against the root causes of violence, creating new definitions and solutions of identity and resiliency, and empowering all community members as agents of change.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Leadership Development: Freedom, Inc. has designed a multi-tiered development structure that begins with political education, a process of consciousness raising geared towards a broad sector of impacted people. The second tier is leadership development, a program geared towards members of the organization and intended to equip members with a basic skill set essential to organizing and sharpen our collective analysis through the introduction of political theory, particularly around identifying root causes and intersectionality. The third tier is the advanced leadership development program for established leaders, to deepen their understanding of critical issues, prepare them to design and lead campaigns from start to finish and instill in them the importance of developing other leaders as an essential aspect of their own leadership. • Building power, movement science: We are developing, testing, refining and sharing the science of building organization, designing campaigns, launching effective actions and contributing to a growing social movement. The heart of our scientific method is grassroots led direct action in the context of an ambitious campaign. • End violence in our communities: Our work does not only target the state and state actors in ending violence, we also do deep transformative work within our communities to end the violence we may enact on one another. For over a decade we have been practicing building resilient communities that can effectively disrupt and end violence, outside of penal and carceral systems. We have created models and have tested out these models in incidents of sexual assault and domestic violence, homo/transphobia and gun violence.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $660,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: • Strengthen our base building: Many of our folx come to us needing help to manage a crisis. We would be able to meet some basic needs of our base, whether that be emergency housing, food etc. We would also be able to create more spaces for our communities to gather and use them as a nexus for building power. In Madison (over 85% white), Black spaces and poc spaces generally are rare and often criminalized. • Increase leadership development: We could afford more stipends and positions for organizers, as well as run more freedom schools and other intensive training programs which require more resources. • Grassroots campaigns: We could increase participation in radical campaigns, with unrestricted support. • Create positions that promote movement sustainability and not burnout: We work with folx with physical, mental and emotional wellness challenges. With more resources, we could pay folx well enough to not struggle.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Investing in our core leadership to increase the depth and impact of the Network. • Developing training curriculum and political education to strengthen the leadership and political analysis of our members and supporters. • Growing the network to 10 communities and campuses.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $222,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: We would like to offer chapter grants to incentivize creative chapter development and campaign planning. Our Ella Baker Leadership Program would expand to become a robust training program for investing in our top leadership across the organization. We would organize regional trainings to annually convene our members locally to deepen relationships and enhance skill sets. We would rent a house for our office to create a welcoming space for our members to call home base and to be a place where local community members can meet Million Hoodies.

Project South’s work for thirty years has been rooted in the Black Radical Tradition and Southern Black communities living on critical frontlines of economic, racial, and gender justice – building the foundation for successful broad-based, democratic social justice movements. They work directly with communities pushed forward by conditions of poverty, racism, and violence in order to build movement infrastructure that consistently provides education, leadership development, communication, legal advocacy, and long-term strategy for community organizing. Project South deepens cross-constituency and multi-issue alliances in a 13-state geography that work to dismantle harmful conditions while simultaneously setting and implementing community agendas for change.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: Project South prioritizes authentic youth leadership development for community organizing, movement-based education, and regional infrastructure building for movement governance. Community organizing that builds long-term and can flex in times of crisis requires a strong base of young people leading from the bottom up. In a moment when the national dialogue has opened up a space to address the brutality of state violence on Black communities, the youngest Black generation is rising to demand resources, support, and long-term plans. Producing innovative and historically-based curriculum, publications, and analysis through our education programs, including the Building A Movement (BAM) leadership institutes and University Sin Fronteras campuses, intervenes on ahistorical tendencies and provides a foundation of critical thinking and knowledge development practices within movement organizations. Over the last 10 years, Project South has practiced and evolved grassroots participatory democracy spaces called Peoples Movement Assemblies that facilitate community representatives to assess the conditions and collectively create shared initiatives and campaigns. The Southern Movement Assembly (SMA), a growing regional alliance of 14 anchor organizations has convened over 1,000 community delegates with over 100 participating organizations since 2012. Facilitating the Black-led, multiracial collaboration is a priority and critical to building infrastructure that includes a strong movement governance vehicle for decision-making, rapid response, and long-term design. In a deeply under-resourced region, race plays a particular dynamic in securing funds for Black- led, Southern organizing work. Project South prioritizes resource distribution to effective but strapped organizations and leaders in order to ensure fullest participation in political spaces.

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $1,100,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: Project South is in a unique position to support strategic frontline Black-led organizations working with formerly incarcerated people, rural Black families, and communities living in poverty. With more steady resources, Project South would expand our movement support infrastructure to deepen leadership pipelines across the South, increase our cohort development through BAM (Building A Movement) Institutes, shore up existing community-based Black-led organizations, and create and train deployable teams, including legal, medical, and first-responders. Steady revenue would allow Project South to implement big visions around communication infrastructure like activating Southern Black radio stations to broadcast social justice programming and expanding our Global South Initiatives to address migration, displacement, and depopulation while connecting more with global liberation movements. Project South will continue to create entry points for a new generation of leadership and provide the southern movement constellation with the power of an established institute and the flexibility of a team of experienced organizers, youth, and educators.

SONG is a membership-based, Southern regional organization made up of working class, people of color, immigrants, and rural LGBTQ people. We build, sustain, and connect a Southern base of LBGTQ people in order to transform the region through strategic projects and campaigns developed in response to the current conditions in our communities. We build this movement through leadership development, intersectional analysis, and organizing. We vision a world where the 3rd shift factory worker and the drag queen at the bar down the block see their lives as connected, and work together for liberation.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Advancing LGBTQ support for racial justice movements such as the and the immigrant justice movement as well as supporting LGBTQ leadership within those movements • Expanding and strengthening our base of over 3,000 Southern LGBTQ members • Fighting and winning local campaigns in Southern sites to build more safety, access, and dignity for LGBTQ people, especially LGBTQ people of color, immigrants, women, transgender and gender non- conforming people, young people, and poor/working class people

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $1,135,000 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: Multiyear funding allows us to implement hard hitting short-term campaigns with long-term vision and goals. In a region like the South, where statewide policy wins are not currently available to us, we have to invest ongoing time and energy in building the leadership we need to impact change on local and regional scales. Five years of funding would allow us to invest in our intersectional LGBTQ movement’s most valuable resource--our members, who become leaders, who push for concrete and meaningful changes in their own communities--like our members in Richmond who are pushing for a community review board, or our members in Atlanta who are pushing for a fines and fees structure based on income (in the municipal courts). Our aim is to build a set of LGBTQ leaders in the South who are strong enough to combat the right wing forces that endanger our lives and livelihoods. Long-term funding would enable us to do the daily training, technical assistance, leadership support, organizing, and strategy work it takes to build such a movement.

TGIJP is a group of transgender, gender variant and intersex people—inside and outside of prisons, jails and detention centers—creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom. We work in collaboration with others to forge a culture of resistance and resilience to strengthen us for the fight against human rights abuses, imprisonment, police violence, racism, poverty, and societal pressures. We seek to create a world rooted in self- determination, freedom of expression, and gender justice. Our members are low income transgender women of color and our families who are in prison, formerly incarcerated, or targeted by the police.

TOP PRIORITIES INCLUDE: • Re-Entry Programs and Services • Political Education, Leadership development and Empowerment • Policy (all with a prioritization and focus on formerly incarcerated transgender people, particularly Black transgender women and women of color)

2016 OPERATING BUDGET: $579,376 WITH A STEADY REVENUE FOR 5 YEARS, THEY WILL SEEK TO: TGIJP has dreams to someday buy and own its own re-entry house where we could provide housing directly for our members when they are transitioning from jails/prisons back into society. This has been a long time vision of TGIJP because many of the housing shelters and services we have to refer our members to in the community are often also extremely violent, transphobic and insensitive to the needs of our community. We’ve had many efforts to holding these shelters accountable, though we believe we could be much more effective in our work and growth if we can focus solely on providing services to our members, rather than have to rapidly respond to a crisis that may occur in the housing shelters around the city. TGIJP recognizes that access to housing and a sense of safety is extremely successful in helping to reduce recidivism and create a strong foundation for formerly incarcerated TGI people to flourish and meet their basic needs. We hope to expand on this vision and create strong foundations for our members where they will not only survive, but thrive as leaders of our communities.

This organizer would build relationships with persons in the Black immigrant community and would help to build our membership base. Through organizing efforts we would enable other undocuBlack persons to become active in the immigrant and racial justice fight. The Network Coordinator would oversee and enable the work being done by UndocuBlack members and staff. • Compile existing resources and develop new inclusive and accessible resources for the Black undocumented community. This would include, but would not be limited to: Educational, health, mental health and housing resources. • Hold informational sessions, legal clinics, and convenings for the community in various cities • Develop a mental health program that is culturally competent and accessible to the Black undocumented community. • Organize webinars, trainings for allies on anti-blackness,creating inclusive spaces for the Black undocumented community, among other topics • Provide leadership development opportunities for our members and leaders, so they may have the skills necessary to work towards our vision of having inclusive racial and immigrant rights movements
