Just a few days later, the facility’s dryer caught fire, and thankfully no animals or humans were injured. ARF leapt into action to rescue many of the shelter’s residents due to smoke inhalation concerns. Even with that minor setback, we could not be more pleased with the direction our teamwork has taken, and with all who are working tirelessly to make Antioch Animal Services a success. Maddie’s Fund has graciously funded ARF’s efforts in Antioch, as our budget could not support the resources needed to update their facility and bring the desperately needed medical attention and care to the animals. We know we have much more to accomplish; however I wanted to share key excerpts from a recent article on the Antioch City Council’s approval of the newest exciting undertaking. For the complete article, please visit arflife.org/help/antiochimprovements.

Pets for Vets Spotlight Joe and Ronda Adopted March 2016

Retired Army veteran Joe knew something needed to change. He was staying indoors all the time, never wanting to go out - not even for groceries. When he heard about the Pets for Vets program, he was skeptical. He wondered how much of a difference a dog could make. Then, he met Ronda. Suddenly, Joe found himself planning fishing trips on the weekends, knowing Ronda would be by his side. He took her for daily walks and enrolled her in training classes. It all felt so natural that Joe didn’t realize anything had changed until his wife mentioned his new activities. That’s when it hit him: Ronda was the difference. After attending Pets for Vets training classes, Ronda recently received her Canine Good Citizen designation - an important first step in becoming certified as a service dog for Joe. “This is a great program that’s helping a lot of vets,” Joe told us. “People might not think a dog is a big thing, but for combat veterans it gives us someone to open up to. I needed a battle buddy, and I found her in Ronda.”

Page 5 www.arflife.org Spring 2017 Inspiring Learning Explore the World of Animals at ARF’s Vet Camp

One of the most popular programs at award-winning Camp ARF, Vet Camp gives kids a unique opportunity to explore their passion for pets. Campers from first to eighth grade immerse themselves in the veterinary world through age-appropriate hands-on activities, demonstrations, and lessons about animal health and wellness. Gowning up, meeting dogs and cats from ARF’s Pet Hug Pack®, working with actual animal case studies, and learning practical first-aid techniques deepen campers’ understanding of animals and how best to care for them.

Vet Camp’s lessons of responsible pet ownership leave a lasting impression. Parents tell us their children better understand dogs and cats, are inspired to take on new responsibilities caring for their pets at home, and share the lessons they learned in Camp with their friends and classmates.

Vet Camp, and all of ARF’s Humane Education curriculum, inspires the next generation of animal lovers with lessons on respect, responsibility, and good citizenship for all. Bring these powerful concepts to life - sign your child up for a summer they’ll never forget at Camp ARF.

New California Law: Hot Car Dangers

Spring and summer are fast approaching. Though most of us love to bring our animal companions along with us, you should never leave your pet in a hot car. Even on a mild 72-degree day, a car’s internal temperature can skyrocket well past 110 degrees within an hour. This year, California passed a law prohibiting leaving animals in unattended vehicles if by doing so you endanger their health or well-being. Leaving your pet unattended in conditions including extreme weather, lack of ventilation, and lack of food or water could subject you to criminal prosecution. If you encounter a pet trapped in a hot vehicle, by California law you must follow these five steps to rescue the animal: • Determine that the vehicle is locked and breaking the window is the most reasonable method of entry • Act in good faith, believing there is imminent danger if the animal is not removed • Contact law enforcement before entering the vehicle • Use no more force than necessary to enter the vehicle • Remain at the scene with the rescued animal in a safe location until law enforcement arrives. Page 13 www.arflife.org Spring 2017 Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Update On the Road With ARF’s Mobile Clinic In its first year of operation, ARF’s Mobile Clinic has had a tremendous impact on the pets and people of Contra Costa County. We’ve kept up our twice-monthly visits to the Martinez VA, where we are proud to offer free wellness exams and vaccines to the pets of veterans, and continue to utilize the Clinic for additional support for spay/neuter for ARF’s animals and our community partners. In addition, we now host a low-cost public spay/neuter clinic every week at select Pet Food Express locations throughout Contra Costa County! Since we launched, more than 1,200 animals have been altered onboard - preventing more senseless

loss of life due to animal overpopulation. Rachel Capil Photography Credits: Photo
