Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone forging trails through the wilderness? Sitting Bull riding on horseback by a cluster of tepees on the plain? When I was a girl, that’s the frontier I learned about from history books. Women were rarely featured in those books, except for a handful of nameless moth- erly women peering out of covered wagons, or haggard pioneers stand- ing in sod hovels surrounded by several grim-looking children. From novels, movies, and television, I gained different images of frontier women. They were strong, enduring pioneers in cozy log cabins and headstrong, free-spirited girls racing across the prairie. They were feisty women doctors on horseback and sassy dance-hall girls with hearts of gold. These more modern stereotypes of frontier women made me positively nostalgic for the good old days! Later in life, though, I discovered much about the real history of frontier women, which led me to write this book. My discoveries about the gritty realities of frontier life—bedbugs and mosquitoes, starvation ■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V■V v fm.qxd 12/27/01 7:07 AM Page vi and shoot-outs, ruthless treatment of Native Americans—also nipped my nostalgia in the bud. I no longer wish I had lived on the frontier, but I admire frontier women more than ever. In nineteenth-century America there wasn’t much tolerance for adventurous women with big dreams. Victorian notions that dominated “civilized” society held that women were dependent, weak, and not ter- ribly bright. In fact, the only strength women were supposed to have was an innate goodness, which made them fit to be mothers (and, if unmar- ried, teachers and nurses). Did that goodness translate into equal status in soci- ety, though? No way. Husbands, fathers, and brothers were basically the lords and masters, property owners and purse-keepers who dished out spending allowances for their womenfolk. Still, the vast, ever-changing nineteenth-century frontier provided opportunities for women with dreams. Although not all frontier women thrived in a rugged environment, the outrageous women in this book cer- tainly did. Each had a dream and each had true grit. Sacagawea’s dream was to find her lost family, and she enjoyed some fine adventures along the way. Mis- sionary Narcissa Whitman’s dream was to be the first white woman to travel the entire Oregon Trail. In 1803, France sold a large section of land west of the Mississippi to America in the Louisiana Purchase. Between 1803 and the 1880s, by hook or by crook, America wrested land claims from Spain, Russia, Canada, and Native American tribes. By the late 1890s, the last Native American nations had signed treaties, had given up their land, and had agreed to settle on reservations. By century’s end, America firmly held the reins of power, from the Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi. Thousands of restless settlers and fortune seekers (the vast majority were Anglo-Saxon—Caucasian people of Eng- lish, Irish, Scottish, German, and Scandinavian origin) poured into the frontier. Because whites were in the majority, American frontier history has long focused on their lives. Most white frontier immigrants were male, but the women among them left something unique: scads of diaries and letters that depicted their lives in detail. Minority frontier women nurtured big dreams, too. African Ameri- can, Native American, Hispanic, French, Russian, and Asian women sought land, fortune, freedom, and justice. For them, however, discrim- ination created even greater obstacles. Unfortunately, chronicling the lives of minority women is far more difficult because records are sketchy or nonexistent. Have you ever seen a crazy quilt made from scraps of leftover fabric, each piece a unique shape, color, and texture, yet bound together into a whole? That’s how I see the frontier women in this book. Some were splashy and sassy. Others were righteous and determined. Some shook their fists in anger. Others danced and sang their way through life. Only a handful of explorers, traders, and missionaries had ventured deep into that myste- rious wilderness. Thousands of Native American tribes domi- nated its vast frontier. The French also claimed a large midsection called Louisiana, the British claimed much of the Great Lakes region, the Spanish controlled most of the South- west, and the Russians claimed parts of the Pacific Northwest. For the first few decades, this multicultural mix got along fairly well. In some areas, intermarriage was commonplace. In 1803, America bought the huge Louisiana territory from France for $15 million, which doubled the size of the United States.

Etulain arc Simmons, New Mexico's leading historian, has always ridden a Mhorse ofanother kind. Freed from aCCiclemic turfsquabbles, working primarily outside the classroom, and writing most often for newspaper and other lay historians, Simmons remains his own historian. Launched as a doctoral graduate in the mid-196os from the University of New Mexico (UNM), Simmons's subsequent historiographical journey, although indi­ vidualistic, followed more closely the paths ofFrance V. Scholes and Herbert Eugene Bolton than the newer revisionist writings of scholars like Ramon Gutierrez. But to be more precise, Simmons is sui generis, a historian ofhis "­ own stripe, different from most other historians of New Mexico and the Southwest.     Settlement of the West The Western Career of Wild Bill Hickok James Butler Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois on 27 May 1837, the fourth of six children born to William and Polly Butler Hickok. Like his father, Wild Bill was a supporter of abolition. He often helped his father in the risky business of running their "station" on the Underground Railroad. He learned his shooting skills protecting the farm with his father from slave catchers. Hickok was a good shot from a very young age, especially an outstanding marksman with a pistol. He went west in 1857, first trying his hand at farming in Kansas. The next year he was elected constable. In 1859, he got a job with the Pony Express Company. Later that year he was badly mauled by a bear. On 12 July 1861, still convalescing from his injuries at an express station in Nebraska, he got into a disagreement with Dave McCanles over business and a shared woman, Sarah Shull. McCanles "called out" Wild Bill from the Station House. Wild Bill emerged onto the street, immediately drew one of his .36 caliber revolvers, and at a 75 yard distance, fired a single shot into McCanlesʼ chest, killing him instantly. Hickok was tried for the killing but judged to have acted in self-defense. The McCanles incident propelled Hickock to fame as a gunslinger. By the time he was a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War, his reputation with a gun was already well known. Sometime during his Army days, he backed down a lynch mob, and a woman shouted, "Good for you, Wild Bill!" It was a name which has stuck for all eternity.

They came in a covered wagon from Missouri to Virginia City. The j ourney took five months . There were many other people traveling . in wagons to the rich mining fields , and they banded together to help one another over the rough roads and bridgeless rivers .     Calamity Jane Calamity Jane was born on May 1, 1852 in Princeton, Missouri. Her real name was Martha Jane Cannary. By the time she was 12 years old, both of her parents had died. It was then her job to raise her 5 younger brothers and sisters. She moved the family from Missouri to Wyoming and did whatever she could to take care of her brothers and sisters. In 1876, Calamity Jane settled in Deadwood, South Dakota, the site of a new gold rush. It has been told that during this time she met Wild Bill Hickok, who was known for his shooting skills. Jane would later say that she married him in 1873. Many people think this was not true because if you look at the years, she said she married him 3 years before she really met him. When she was in Deadwood, Jane carried goods and machinery to camps outside of the town and worked other jobs too. She was known for being loud and annoying. She also did not act very lady like. However, she was known to be very generous and giving. Jane worked as a cook, a nurse, a miner and an ox-team driver, and became an excellent horseback rider who was great with a gun. She was a good shot and a fearless rider for a girl her age. By 1893, Calamity Jane was appearing in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a trick shooter and horse rider. She died on August 1, 1903, in Terry, South Dakota, at the age of 51.

    Travel Through History 1856, May 1 - Martha Canary is born in Mercer County near the town of Princeton, Missouri. She was to become the eldest of six siblings. 1865 - Martha moves with her family to Virginia City, Montana Territory. 1866, spring - Martha’s mother, (Charlotte M. Canary) dies in Blackfoot City mining camp, Montana Territory. 1867 - Martha’s father (Robert Willson Canary) dies in Utah orphaning the Canary children. Martha Canary 1868 - Martha arrives in the Wyoming Territory and begins exploration within the area. 1873 - Captain James Egan allegedly christens Martha Canary with the nickname “Calamity Jane” after she saved his life during an Indian campaign at Goose Creek, Wyoming. 1875, May-June - Newton and Jenney Expedition leaves Ft. Laramie to the Black Hills. Calamity Jane accompanied expedition without proper authority and was forced to return. 1875, fall - Gold discovered in Whitewood Creek and adjacent tributaries. 1876, June - Calamity Jane leaves Ft. Laramie and heads for Portrait of Martha Canary circa 1880-1882 while she was living in the Black Hills with many famous Deadwood legends, including Miles City, Montana Territory. James Butler Hickok, Colorado Charlie Utter, and White-Eyed Anderson. 1876, August 2 - Wild Bill Hickok is murdered by Jack McCall in the No. 10 Saloon.
