Exemplary, by definition, means the top 5 percent of education programs in student outcomes. In most cases, these programs are in the top 1 percent. Each program entryincludes contact information, a narrative description, and in some cases, awards received, documentation of student outcomes, and other relevant information. Schools range from elementary through college and include public, private, tribal, and nonprofit. Programs address student support services, comprehensive school improvement, dropout prevention, adult education, college preparation, technology integration, and other areas. All 16 programs are summarized on one page in the beginning of the book, and program characteristics are presented in chart form. A brief history of Indian education is followed by a description of the 11 elements that are characteristic of exemplary programs: acknowledgement of the problem; set priorities for problems; vision, planning; commitment; restructuring and retraining; goal setting; experimentation, testing, and evaluation; outreach; expertise; and administrative support. -

Etulain arc Simmons, New Mexico's leading historian, has always ridden a Mhorse ofanother kind. Freed from aCCiclemic turfsquabbles, working primarily outside the classroom, and writing most often for newspaper and other lay historians, Simmons remains his own historian. Launched as a doctoral graduate in the mid-196os from the University of New Mexico (UNM), Simmons's subsequent historiographical journey, although indi vidualistic, followed more closely the paths ofFrance V. Scholes and Herbert Eugene Bolton than the newer revisionist writings of scholars like Ramon Gutierrez. But to be more precise, Simmons is sui generis, a historian ofhis " own stripe, different from most other historians of New Mexico and the Southwest. Settlement of the West The Western Career of Wild Bill Hickok James Butler Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois on 27 May 1837, the fourth of six children born to William and Polly Butler Hickok. Like his father, Wild Bill was a supporter of abolition. He often helped his father in the risky business of running their "station" on the Underground Railroad. He learned his shooting skills protecting the farm with his father from slave catchers. Hickok was a good shot from a very young age, especially an outstanding marksman with a pistol. He went west in 1857, first trying his hand at farming in Kansas. The next year he was elected constable. In 1859, he got a job with the Pony Express Company. Later that year he was badly mauled by a bear. On 12 July 1861, still convalescing from his injuries at an express station in Nebraska, he got into a disagreement with Dave McCanles over business and a shared woman, Sarah Shull. McCanles "called out" Wild Bill from the Station House. Wild Bill emerged onto the street, immediately drew one of his .36 caliber revolvers, and at a 75 yard distance, fired a single shot into McCanlesʼ chest, killing him instantly. Hickok was tried for the killing but judged to have acted in self-defense. The McCanles incident propelled Hickock to fame as a gunslinger. By the time he was a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War, his reputation with a gun was already well known. Sometime during his Army days, he backed down a lynch mob, and a woman shouted, "Good for you, Wild Bill!" It was a name which has stuck for all eternity. -

On both sides there was bravery and courage. Long afterward these became the basis of frontier Ill.. rtfj sto.Aes. Many stories have been told about Calamity Jane . Not all of them are true. But even those t hat ar e legends tell us something of her adventurous life on the frontier. Martha Jane Canary, born i n Princeton, Mi ssouri, May 1, 1852, was the oldest of seven children of whom five were girls and two bo ys. She was fond of adventure and liked to r ide horses from · the time she was able to walk. People called her a tomboy. When she was 13 years old the f amily moved to Montana. They came in a covered wagon from Missouri to Virginia City. The j ourney took five months . There were many other people traveling . in wagons to the rich mining fields , and they banded together to help one another over the rough roads and bridgeless rivers . I n this way they were also safer f rom hostile I ndians who often attack ed 'small parties, but were less li ke~y to attack large parties . Calamity Jane
Calamity Jane Calamity Jane was born on May 1, 1852 in Princeton, Missouri. Her real name was Martha Jane Cannary. By the time she was 12 years old, both of her parents had died. It was then her job to raise her 5 younger brothers and sisters. She moved the family from Missouri to Wyoming and did whatever she could to take care of her brothers and sisters. In 1876, Calamity Jane settled in Deadwood, South Dakota, the site of a new gold rush. It has been told that during this time she met Wild Bill Hickok, who was known for his shooting skills. Jane would later say that she married him in 1873. Many people think this was not true because if you look at the years, she said she married him 3 years before she really met him. When she was in Deadwood, Jane carried goods and machinery to camps outside of the town and worked other jobs too. She was known for being loud and annoying. She also did not act very lady like. However, she was known to be very generous and giving. Jane worked as a cook, a nurse, a miner and an ox-team driver, and became an excellent horseback rider who was great with a gun. She was a good shot and a fearless rider for a girl her age. By 1893, Calamity Jane was appearing in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a trick shooter and horse rider. She died on August 1, 1903, in Terry, South Dakota, at the age of 51. -

McComb UNIVERSITY OF REGINA FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH SUPERVISORY AND EXAMINING COMMITTEE Catherine Mary McComb, candidate for the degree of Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, has presented a thesis titled, Undressing an American icon: Addressing the representation of Calamity Jane through a critical study of her costume, in an oral examination held on November 15, 2016. This thesis looks at Calamity Jane’s costume because it was so seminal to her emergence as an American frontier icon. Unlike one-off costumes such as Dorothy’s ruby slippers or Marilyn Monroe’s JFK birthday dress, Calamity Jane’s costume re-occurred and was the determining factor in her rise to fame. -

TheThe NavajoNavajo: A Brief HistorHistory:y According to scientists who study different cultures, the first Navajo lived in western Canada some one thousand years ago. They belonged to an American Indian group called the Athapaskans and they called themselves "Dine" or "The People". As time passed, many of the Athapaskans migrated southward and some settled along the Pacific Ocean. They still live there today and belong to the Northwest Coast Indian tribes. A number of Athapaskan bands, including the first Navajos, migrated southwards across the plains and through the mountains. It was a long, slow trip, but the bands weren't in a hurry. When they found a good place to stay, they would often live there for a long period of time and then move on. For hundreds of years, the early Athapaskan bands followed the herds of wandering animals and searched for good gathering grounds. Scientists, believe that some Athapaskan bands first came to the American Southwest around the year 1300. Some settled in southern Arizona and New Mexico and became the different Apache tribes. Apache languages sound very much like Navajo. The Navajo Athapaskans settled among the mesas, canyons, and rivers of northern New Mexico. The first Navajo land was called Dine’tah. Three rivers - the San Juan, the Gobernador, and the Largo ran through Dine’tah, which was situated just east of Farmington, New Mexico. By the year 1400, the Navajos came in touch with Pueblo Indians. The Navajos learned farming from the Pueblo Indians and by the 1600s, they had become fully capable of raising their own food. -
