Appendix II - History and Filmography of the Reno

The engine, known as the “Reno,” was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1872. It was designated as engine number 11 by the & Truckee Railroad. It became a common hauler on that railroad, running between Reno, Minden, Carson City, and Virginia City until replaced by more modern equipment. In 1938, obtained an option to purchase or lease the engine for $500. The Reno was first used in the Cecil B. Demille movie, Union Pacific. In 1945, Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer obtained the engine for $5,000.

In 1970, Robert Shelton, owner of , bought the engine at auction from MGM and moved it to Tucson, Arizona. The movie Powderkeg was filmed that December at Old Tucson Studios. At the conclusion of this movie, Twentieth Century Fox sold a Central Pacific six-axle passenger coach to Old Tucson Studios. This coach was built around 1880 and acquired originally by Fox Film Corporation before the merger with Twentieth Century in 1935.
