Jim Levy, Irish Jewish Gunfighter of the Old West By William Rabinowitz It’s been a few quite a few years since Chandler, our grandson, was a little boy. His parents would come down with him every winter, free room and board, and happy Grandparents to baby sit. I doubt they actually came to visit much with the geriatrics but it was a free “vacation”. It is not always sun and surf and pool and hot in Boynton Beach, Fl. Sometimes it is actually cold and rainy here. Today was one of those cold and rainy days. Chandler has long since grown up into a typical American young person more interested in “connecting” in Cancun than vegetating in Boynton Beach anymore. I sat down on the sofa, sweatshirt on, house temperature set to “nursing home” hot, a bowl of popcorn, diet coke and turned on the tube. Speed channel surfing is a game I used to play with Chandler. We would sit in front of the T.V. and flip through the channels as fast as our fingers would move. The object was to try and identify the show in the micro second that the image flashed on the screen. Grandma Sheila sat in her sitting room away from the enervating commotion. She was always busy needle- pointing another treasured wall hanging that will need to be framed and sold someday at an estate sale. With my trusty channel changer at my side, I began flipping through the stations, scanning for something that would be of interest as fast as possible. -

Etulain arc Simmons, New Mexico's leading historian, has always ridden a Mhorse ofanother kind. Freed from aCCiclemic turfsquabbles, working primarily outside the classroom, and writing most often for newspaper and other lay historians, Simmons remains his own historian. Launched as a doctoral graduate in the mid-196os from the University of New Mexico (UNM), Simmons's subsequent historiographical journey, although indi vidualistic, followed more closely the paths ofFrance V. Scholes and Herbert Eugene Bolton than the newer revisionist writings of scholars like Ramon Gutierrez. But to be more precise, Simmons is sui generis, a historian ofhis " own stripe, different from most other historians of New Mexico and the Southwest. The volume under review, librarian Phyllis Morgan's exceptionally use ful bio-bibliography, thoroughly displays the extraordinary dimensions of Marc Simmons ofNew Mexico: Maverick Historian. Settlement of the West The Western Career of Wild Bill Hickok James Butler Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois on 27 May 1837, the fourth of six children born to William and Polly Butler Hickok. Like his father, Wild Bill was a supporter of abolition. He often helped his father in the risky business of running their "station" on the Underground Railroad. He learned his shooting skills protecting the farm with his father from slave catchers. Hickok was a good shot from a very young age, especially an outstanding marksman with a pistol. He went west in 1857, first trying his hand at farming in Kansas. The next year he was elected constable. In 1859, he got a job with the Pony Express Company. Later that year he was badly mauled by a bear. On 12 July 1861, still convalescing from his injuries at an express station in Nebraska, he got into a disagreement with Dave McCanles over business and a shared woman, Sarah Shull. McCanles "called out" Wild Bill from the Station House. Wild Bill emerged onto the street, immediately drew one of his .36 caliber revolvers, and at a 75 yard distance, fired a single shot into McCanlesʼ chest, killing him instantly. Hickok was tried for the killing but judged to have acted in self-defense. The McCanles incident propelled Hickock to fame as a gunslinger. By the time he was a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War, his reputation with a gun was already well known. Sometime during his Army days, he backed down a lynch mob, and a woman shouted, "Good for you, Wild Bill!" It was a name which has stuck for all eternity. -

Episode 2 – “Deep Water” (In front of the Grand Central Hotel, men are felling a tree using ropes to guide it.) Lumberjack: Hold it, now keep attention on it boys! That’s it! (EB emerges from the hotel pushing a wheelbarrow full of laundry – he’s heading for Mr. Wu’s. We see Tim Driscoll’s dog come running after him. When EB gets to the pig sty, we see Mr. Wu raking the mud around the pen and hear the pigs squealing – he watches EB approach.) E.B.: “Washee” (Holding up some of the linens) Mr. Wu: “Washee” (EB reveals the body of Tim Driscoll in the cart under the linens.) EB: “Eat-ee” (Camera pans to the pigs, EB points to the barking dog) His doggy, them “eat-ee” too, or, “eat-ee” him yourself, you leering heathen. (Smiles, laughs and leaves.) --- (Up in Al’s bedroom, he and Trixie are sleeping – Al sits up, Trixie remains asleep. We hear the chattering of the lumberjacks outside, Al gets up and – yup, pisses in his chamber pot. He looks out the window and sees the men fell the tree. He spots EB approaching. Al, finished pissing, picks up the gun Trixie left on his bedside table – Trixie opens her eyes.) Al: Is this for me? Trixie:Brought it for you. Al: (Throws back the covers off a naked Trixie) Get out. --- (Back out on the street – one man is talking excitedly to another.) Hoople head: Pointed the gun at him! Boom, shot him right over there! That’s the guy over there. -

On both sides there was bravery and courage. Long afterward these became the basis of frontier Ill.. rtfj sto.Aes. Many stories have been told about Calamity Jane . Not all of them are true. But even those t hat ar e legends tell us something of her adventurous life on the frontier. Martha Jane Canary, born i n Princeton, Mi ssouri, May 1, 1852, was the oldest of seven children of whom five were girls and two bo ys. She was fond of adventure and liked to r ide horses from · the time she was able to walk. People called her a tomboy. When she was 13 years old the f amily moved to Montana. They came in a covered wagon from Missouri to Virginia City. The j ourney took five months . There were many other people traveling . in wagons to the rich mining fields , and they banded together to help one another over the rough roads and bridgeless rivers . I n this way they were also safer f rom hostile I ndians who often attack ed 'small parties, but were less li ke~y to attack large parties . I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -
