1 THE ORCHESTRA By Rebecca Graulich

“I tapped my feet through the whole show,” said Folsom resident Jessica Davis. So did just about everyone else who attended the (GMO) at Three Stages on October 21. The audience was physically in their seats but mentally and emotionally they were swirling on the dance floor.

The GMO, under Alton Glenn Miller’s leadership, began in March 1938 and ended in October 1942 when Miller reported for induction into the Army. After months of insisting that he could modernize the army band and improve the morale of the men, he was promoted to Captain and transferred into the Army Air Corps. It was there that he organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band.

In the fall of 1944, his band was scheduled for a six- week tour of Europe; they were to be stationed in Paris. On December 15th Miller left England for Paris to make arrangements for the band’s arrival. Neither Miller nor his transport plane were seen again. Hilscher, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, began with the GMO in 1998 as their featured male vocalist. With the exception of a one-year break to complete his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Samford University, he sang with the band until February 2005.

THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA

Hilscher recorded his first solo album in 2002, Nick Hilscher Sings with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This recording features original big band arrangements. After leaving the GMO in 2005, Hilscher performed alone and with various bands. In 2005, he was the featured vocalist for two 100th birthday celebrations of Tommy Dorsey. One was with the Julliard Jazz Orchestra and the other with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

In April 2010 Hilscher released another solo album, Young and Foolish. It features the music of , Sr., Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Roger Miller, Nat “King” Cole, and . Hilscher arranged and orchestrated all of the music on this recording. In January 2012, he returned to the GMO as their Music Director.

Performers in the GMO come from all parts of the US. The third chair trumpet, Shawn Williams, is an “almost local.” He was born in the Bay Area and spent much of his early years in the Sacramento area. In fact, at one point his family thought they would move to Folsom. They’re exhilarating! I don’t want the night to end. Williams initially began playing the piano but found ~Jeanne Lupien it difficult to coordinate all of his fingers. His brother suggested he play the trumpet I closed my eyes and they were because it only has three buttons. This set him on better than my CDs the path to ultimately earn a Masters of Music on ~Guy Lupien, Sacramento the jazz trumpet from the Eastman School of Music.

So what, after all of these years, attracts young musicians to the GMO style of music and audiences around the world to listen to them? In part, it’s the unique sound that Glenn Miller created by having the clarinet hold the melodic line while the tenor sax plays the same note and three other saxophones support them harmonically. It may also be the mystic of Miller’s disappearance or the 1953 Jimmy Stewart movie about Glenn Miller or that they are the longest continually performing band in the US.

It has been said that Glenn Miller’s favorite quote was from , “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!” Miller would be happy to know his band and his fans are still swinging to his music. For more information, see glennmillerorchestra.com.
