This study traces the expansion of the srdc scheme from its compact deployment in strophes to expanded iterations that approximate verse- chorus form. Received February 2011 [1] This article examines an episode in the evolution of verse-chorus form in pop/rock music. Until the mid-1960s, most verse-chorus songs alternated between the two formal sections from which verse-chorus form takes its name: verses and choruses. Example 1, Mark Dinning’s “Teen Angel,” illustrates the form.(2) As is typical for verse-chorus songs, the focal point of “Teen Angel” is the chorus: it contains the most engaging musical material; its unchanging lyric makes it easy to remember; and it is marked for special attention by additional vocal and instrumental parts. The verses, on the other hand, provide context: each verse advances the song narrative by presenting fresh lyrics; and the music is more modest in instrumentation and intensity so as not to steal attention from the chorus. In “Teen Angel,” the tempo is treated flexibly during the verses, which further distinguishes them from the choruses.

    The Aesthetics of �Hate Music� By Keith Kahn-Harris Introduction The expression of hatred in music is, for many people, something intrinsically worrisome. From Nazi skinhead music to homophobic reggae, hate music seems to demand close watching at least and direct censorship at most. This is perfectly understandable given contemporary concerns about �hate speech� and in many ways the desire not to let hate-filled music pass without comment is a laudable one. However, I want to argue that the terms of the debate about hate and music are all too frequently rooted in certain, very questionable, ideas about musical aesthetics and that as a consequence some of the complexities surrounding issues regarding hatred and music tend to be ignored. In particular I wish to question the tacit assumption behind much writing on music and hate that it is a prioria problem. That is, that hatred and music simply do not go together and when they do come together the consequences can only be worrying. In fact, this assumption is historically specific and open to question and contestation, with important consequences for our understanding of music and hate The legitimacy of hatred In western societies at least, the development in the nineteenth century of a particular musical aesthetic has had far-reaching consequences (Chanan 1994). That is, the resurrection of the Platonic idea that music should ideally represent a form of transcendental perfection. In an impure world of lust, conflict and hatred, music should ideally represent the world as it ought to be, a world that is whole, perfect, free of messy bodily imperfections and antagonism.

  • We Are So Excited to Welcome You Back
    WE ARE SO EXCITED TO WELCOME YOU BACK I couldn’t be happier to finally be writing this welcome message to you. It’s been an interesting time since my last one; our centenary came and went; our stage was filled not with performers but emergency food provisions; and our team were meeting colleagues through computer screens rather than greeting guests in our beautiful building. We know it’s been a hard year for everyone else too and we’re so excited to welcome you back to experience the magic of theatre once more with this packed programme. It’s only right that after the 100th year of this local treasure, our first season back should be filled with national ones, so we’re delighted to be welcoming cricketing legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott, much-loved music star Tony Christie and the fantastically funny Jasper Carrott amongst a host of brilliant acts this autumn. Fans of folk and country in particular are in for double delight as both The Shires and Seth Lakeman will be gracing our stage while there are also appearances from Elkie Brooks, Eddi Reader, Lee Mead, Michael Portillo and even the brilliant Jason Manford. Lastly, if you missed our fantastic centenary exhibition on stage this summer, there’s an extra chance to see it and find out about the Palace’s fascinating story at our Heritage Open Day event.
