The Hudson Valley, New York-based band have been described by The Washington Post as: “gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton” and deliver performances that are thought-provoking, emotional and sure to leave a mark long after the music stops. Sometimes political, always gritty and with attitude, The Mammals shows really deliver. Supporting The Mammals on this occasion are folky, jazzy Gateshead-based ensemble, Shipcote & Friends. Their most recent album, ‘I’m Quite Happy With That’, has been very well received - and you may recognise guitar/banjo player Bry from his early success with White Heat. Jarrod Dickinson holds firm to his roots in the lone star state; and although largely New York-based, his Texas foundations are strongly apparent. His songs always tell a story, and his ability to take an audience on a journey has seen him gain plaudits from Huey Morgan, and Dermot O’Leary. His live performance at Glastonbury, and support slots with legends Don McLean and The Waterboys, have cemented his reputation as one of the most sought-after songsmiths to grace a stage. His album, ‘The Lonesome Traveller’, is much revered. And the UK market has been the first worldwide to get to hear his most recent LP, ‘Ready The Horses’, available worldwide from early 2019. Joining Jarrod in support is JP Ruggieri, a singer/songwriter with impeccable credentials hailing from Wilton, Connecticut. Indie- ish, country-ish, definitely full of soul, JP has been gaining fans in the US and Europe with rousing live performances. These concerts are going to be high on the agenda for lovers of all thing folky, bluesy, jazzy and rootsy, as has been the tradition for Jumpin’ Hot Club events in the past. After all these years of hard work, the team at Jumpin’ Hot aren’t losing their knack of booking the best and brightest from around the world and bringing them here to our doorsteps. Tickets for both of these events, and more dates throughout 2019, are available from middlesbroughtownhall.co.uk and jumpinhot.com, with tickets available from £12.00. CHARLIE RICHARDSON

If there was any doubt as to what to expect from the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE), as they packed out Ouseburn’s The Cluny, it was soon to resolved - and in some style at that. From the intensity of their ever- evolving setlist to the crowds’ enthusiasm, not a stiff leg was to be found as both young and old alike were helplessly succumbing to the unassailable charm of the brothers in full flow.
