Compiled and Edited by the Editors of BCNN1.com Black Christian News Network One We thank God for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, but we need a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a Rosa Parks today. Introduction We believe that black history is important. But we also believe that making history today is more important. We cannot rest on the laurels of great luminaries such as Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver, and others. God used these and others mightily in their time; now He has given us this time and we will have to answer to Him as to how we use it. In light of that, we have attempted to place in one volume the most influential Black Christian History-Makers who are living today and who are serving Jesus Christ with their various gifts and talents. The ability to lead is not something you can train to have. True leadership is a gift from God that is undeniable by people. You cannot make yourself a leader of people. In other words, you cannot be a leader just because you want to be. Only God makes leaders. One can improve his or her leadership abilities but one cannot make himself or herself a leader. The people who have been chosen for this list are not people who are trying to be leaders; they were born leaders by the grace of God. -

Christopher Slaski Applied Music: The Challenge Of Composing For Films Gothenburg/Sweden, 10th April 2015 CHRISTOPHER SLASKI It’s a great pleasure to be here. I’ve been working in film and applied music for almost 20 years, having started early, when still at university. My beginnings in music was as a pianist and organist. From the age of five, I studied the piano and I began composing in my early teens. The life of a touring concert musician didn’t really appeal to me so I thought: How am I going to make my living out of music? I began to discover there was often very interesting music accompanying films, and I started listening to it with greater attention. I soon realised that this was what I want to do. But how to get into it ? I won’t dwell on that today. That’s for another lecture! Today we’re going to concentrate on the challenges that a film composer has to face, and the difference between composing absolute music and applied music. By ‘applied music’ I am referring to film music or music for advertising, television or theatre, that is to say, music that is written with the intention of applying it to something else. I’m going to try to cover a number of different areas that I believe are important, and give some illustrations using projects I’ve worked on. If anyone has any questions, we’ll leave them till the end when we we’ll have ten minutes or so to have a discussion. -

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

Apocryphon udgives i Danmark The Sword spiller stoner-metal spækket med mægtige riffs og har netop udgivet deres fjerde album, Apocryphon, i hjemlandet USA. De har varmet op for gigantiske metal-acts som Metallica og Ozzy Osbourne, hvor af den sidstnævnte må siges at kunne genkendes som en direkte inspirationskilde for de kompromisløse amerikanere. Hvor The Swords forrige udgivelse, Warp Riders (2010), var et konceptalbum inspireret af en sci-fi-fortælling af sanger og guitarist John ”J.D.” Cronise, er det nye album, der først udkommer i Danmark den 5. november, i højere grad inspireret af sangerens egne meninger og tanker. Før sin danske udgivelse har Apocryphon vækket begejstring hos anmeldere og fans. Fx giver Ekstrabladet fem ud af seks mulige stjerner og sender i øvrigt en opfordring til The Prince of Darkness: ”The Sword burde få et ridderslag af Ozzy”. Indtil Apocryphon rammer hylderne i Danmark, og mens fans må væbne sig med tålmodighed, kan man nyde bundsolide numre fra det intense heavy- album som fx ”Eyes Of The Stormwitch” og selvfølgelig titelnummeret ”Apocryphon”. Development of Musical Ideas in Compositions by Tortoise
DEVELOPMENT OF MUSICAL IDEAS IN COMPOSITIONS BY TORTOISE Reiner Krämer Prologue For more than 25 years, the Chicago-based experimental rock band Tortoise has crossed over multiple popular music genres (ambient music, krautrock, dub, electronica, drums and bass, reggae, etc.) as well as different types of jazz music, and has made use of minimalist Western art music.1 The group is often labeled a pioneer of the »post-rock« genre. Allegedly, Simon Reynolds first used the term in his review of the album Hex by the English east Lon- don band Bark Psychosis (Reynolds 1994a) and shortly afterwards in his arti- cle »Shaking the Rock Narcotic« (Reynolds 1994b: 28-32). In connection to Tortoise he used »post-rock« in his review article of their 1996 album Mil- lions Now Living Will Never Die (Reynolds 1996). Reynolds describes music he labels as ›post-rock‹ where bands use guitars »in [non-rock] ways« to manipulate »timbre and texture rather than riff[s]« and »augment rock's basic guitar-bass-drums lineup with digital technology such as samplers and sequencers« (Reynolds 2017: 509). Most members of Tortoise act as multi- instrumentalists that play different combinations of instruments at different times. As Jeanette Leech (2017: 16) has stated, a typical Tortoise stage set- up can feature vibraphones, marimbas, two drum sets, and a multitude of synthesizers. With regards to the instrumental setup Leech draws up paral- lels with progressive rock of the 1970s but points to one decisive difference within the genres: »for Tortoise, the range of instrumentation [is] about creating mood, not showboating« (ibid.). -
