The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people. -
The Concert of the Animals & Friends, Muzyczna Owczarnia, Szczawnica
The concert of the Animals & Friends, Muzyczna Owczarnia, Szczawnica-Jaworki, 10th and 11th April 2016. This place is magical, here we can all be together, No matter who we are, no matter where we come from, Here peace and goodwill fills the air, here we are closer to God, While the music brings us together in joy. Even the most abstractive dreams come true. When I read on the website of Muzyczna Owczarnia that the Animals & Friends would perform at Wietek Kołodziejski, I could not believe that. Theoretical and practical thoughts ran through my mind as quickly as lightning, and then I called Wietek to ask him for a ticket and to Grzegorz Kasprzyk to book accommodation at his Koliba (chalet). Muzyczna Owczarnia. The interest was so high that there were two concerts: on Sunday 10th and on Monday 11th. I arrived in Jaworki on Saturday to tune myself in this emotional atmosphere:) Sylwia, Wietk’s wife, had everything ready. The musicians came on Sunday at 3 p.m. with Łukasz Gorczyca and Sebastian Kowol. Their presence was meaningful so there is a short mention about them. Łukasz Gorczyca - basist, composer, author of numerous projects, known from cooperation with many famous domestic and foreign musicians. There are among others: Patsy Gamble, Jennifer Batten, Terry Man, Andy Egert, Wheatbread Johnson, Griff Hamlin, Barry Richman, Alvon Johnson, Keith Thompson, Rob Tognoni, Risto Toppola, Chuck Frazier, Kellie Rucker, Billy Hamilton, Chaz de Paolo, Alex Rossi, Grainne Duffy, Ian Sands Blues Band, Krissy Matthews, Dave Ellis Blues Band, Janet Robin, Leon Hendrix, Noel Coutts. -

Trade Marks Inter Partes Decision (O/311/08)
O-311-08 TRADE MARKS ACT 1994 IN THE MATTER OF APPLICATION No 2355587 BY JOHN STEEL TO REGISTER THE TRADE MARK THE ANIMALS IN CLASSES 9 & 41 AND IN THE MATTER OF OPPOSITION THERETO UNDER NO 93508 BY ERIC VICTOR BURDON BACKGROUND 1) On 11 February 2004, John Steel applied under the Trade Marks Act 1994 for registration of the trade mark THE ANIMALS in respect of the following: In Class 9: “CD’s, musical recordings.” In Class 41 “ Musical live performances.” 2) On 17 June 2005 Eric Victor Burdon filed notice of opposition to the application. The grounds of opposition are in summary: a) The opponent performs under the names/trade marks THE ANIMALS (the Band) / ERIC BURDON and THE ANIMALS and has these names registered in the USA under numbers 76524982 and 76524983. He has spent his career as a lead singer and songwriter of these bands and was inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. b) The applicant was a member of the Band but was never given any ownership rights in respect of the name of the Band. The applicant initially sought to register a series of five marks in respect of a very wide range of goods in Classes 9 and 41. There was never a realistic likelihood of the marks being used on such a range of goods and services and thus there was no bona fide intention of using the mark on the specification requested. The application therefore offends against Section 3(6) of the Trade Marks Act 1994. -

And that is saying a lot in the wake of the more than two-year witch hunt against President Trump. The reason why the complete exoneration of Lyn- don LaRouche is synonymous with the fate of the United States, lies both in the threat which his oppo- nents pose to the very existence of the U.S.A. as a republic, and thus for the entire world, it system, the International Development Bank, which and also in the implications of his ideas for America’s fu- he elaborated over the years into a New Bretton Woods ture survival. -
