Disability and Music
th nd 19 November to 22 December UKDHM 2018 will focus on Disability and Music. We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes. He is best known for his song Choices and Rights, which became the anthem for the disabled people’s movement in Britain in the late 1980s and includes the powerful lyrics: Choices and Right That’s what we gotta fight for Choices and rights in our lives I don’t want your benefit I want dignity from where I sit I want choices and rights in our lives I don’t want you to speak for me I got my own autonomy I want choices and rights in our lives https://youtu.be/yU8344cQy5g?t=14 The polio virus attacked the nerves. -
Campaign Fact Book Former Whitechapel Bell Foundry Site Whitechapel, London
Campaign Fact Book Former Whitechapel Bell Foundry Site Whitechapel, London Compiled January 2020 Whitechapel Bell Foundry: a matter of national importance This fact book has been compiled to capture the breadth of the campaign to save the site of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which is currently threatened by a proposal for conversion into a boutique hotel. Re-Form Heritage; Factum Foundation; numerous community, heritage and bellringing organisations; and thousands of individuals have contributed to and driven this campaign, which is working to: reinstate modern and sustainable foundry activity on the site preserve and record heritage skills integrate new technologies with traditional foundry techniques maintain and build pride in Whitechapel’s bell founding heritage The site of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry is Britain’s oldest single-purpose industrial building where for generations bells such as Big Ben, the Liberty Bell, Bow Bells and many of the world’s great bells were made. Bells made in Whitechapel have become the voices of nations, marking the world’s celebrations and sorrows and representing principles of emancipation, freedom of expression and justice. As such these buildings and the uses that have for centuries gone on within them represent some of the most important intangible cultural heritage and are therefore of international significance. Once the use of the site as a foundry has gone it has gone forever. The potential impact of this loss has led to considerable concern and opposition being expressed on an unprecedented scale within the local area, nationally and, indeed, internationally. People from across the local community, London and the world have voiced their strong opposition to the developer’s plans and to the hotel use and wish for the foundry use to be retained. -

The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people. -
The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher Ebook
THE SUSPICIONS OF MR. WHICHER PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Kate Summerscale | 400 pages | 20 May 2011 | Bloomsbury Publishing PLC | 9781408824528 | English | London, United Kingdom The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher PDF Book Like any novelist, Summerscale follows her storytelling instincts in making the detective the hero of her book. Indeed, they do it so much better than real life, which is why we read them. Elizabeth Kent uncredited. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection, ironically destroying, in the process, the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land. Whicher finds the missing child at a refuge for fallen women run by Roman Catholic nuns which had taken her in. Before leaving, she had gone into the same outdoor privy to change into a boy's clothes, cropping her hair at the same time. When Whicher offers to help a country lady find her niece, he's drawn into a disturbing case of murder which brings him up against wealthy and powerful figures and throws him into conflict with his Murders were supposed to happen on the desperate streets of London, not in the bedrooms of well-tended rural children. Find out more. Stephen and an opportunistic thief are the main murder suspects but Stephen convinces Whicher that he was the intended victim as he was about to hear important news from his grandfather Joshua, now in an insane asylum. Soon afterwards Mary is found slain and the child missing and Whicher offers to help Susan find the killer. The Concert of the Animals & Friends, Muzyczna Owczarnia, Szczawnica
The concert of the Animals & Friends, Muzyczna Owczarnia, Szczawnica-Jaworki, 10th and 11th April 2016. This place is magical, here we can all be together, No matter who we are, no matter where we come from, Here peace and goodwill fills the air, here we are closer to God, While the music brings us together in joy. Even the most abstractive dreams come true. When I read on the website of Muzyczna Owczarnia that the Animals & Friends would perform at Wietek Kołodziejski, I could not believe that. Theoretical and practical thoughts ran through my mind as quickly as lightning, and then I called Wietek to ask him for a ticket and to Grzegorz Kasprzyk to book accommodation at his Koliba (chalet). Muzyczna Owczarnia. The interest was so high that there were two concerts: on Sunday 10th and on Monday 11th. I arrived in Jaworki on Saturday to tune myself in this emotional atmosphere:) Sylwia, Wietk’s wife, had everything ready. The musicians came on Sunday at 3 p.m. with Łukasz Gorczyca and Sebastian Kowol. Their presence was meaningful so there is a short mention about them. Łukasz Gorczyca - basist, composer, author of numerous projects, known from cooperation with many famous domestic and foreign musicians. There are among others: Patsy Gamble, Jennifer Batten, Terry Man, Andy Egert, Wheatbread Johnson, Griff Hamlin, Barry Richman, Alvon Johnson, Keith Thompson, Rob Tognoni, Risto Toppola, Chuck Frazier, Kellie Rucker, Billy Hamilton, Chaz de Paolo, Alex Rossi, Grainne Duffy, Ian Sands Blues Band, Krissy Matthews, Dave Ellis Blues Band, Janet Robin, Leon Hendrix, Noel Coutts. -
