The WKNO-TV Collection The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection Processed by Joan Cannon 2007 Memphis and Shelby County Room Memphis Public Library and Information Center 3030 Poplar Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38111 Scope and Content The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection was donated to the Memphis Public Library and Information Center by many individual donors over several years. Consisting of programs from performances at Theatre Memphis between the years 1975 and 2007, the collection provides invaluable information on the operation of community theatre in Memphis. Each program includes the names of the director, cast and crew as well as information on the production. Theatre Memphis was established as the Little Theatre in 1921. For several years plays were performed in a variety of locations in Memphis including Germania Hall and the Nineteenth Century Club. In 1929 the Little Theatre was headquartered at the Pink Palace Museum Playhouse where they would remain until the mid-1970s. When the Pink Palace closed for renovations, the theatrical company opened their own venue on Perkins Extended in East Memphis. Changing their name to Theatre Memphis, productions resumed in 1975 and have continued until the present day. 2 THEATRE MEMPHIS PROGRAMS COLLECTION BOX 1 Folder 1 Items 6 1975-1976 (56th Season) SUNSHINE BOYS by Neil Simon. UCLA UCLA Electronic Theses and Dissertations Title Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/1k1860wx Author Ellis, Sarah Taylor Publication Date 2013 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies by Sarah Taylor Ellis 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater by Sarah Taylor Ellis Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Sue-Ellen Case, Co-chair Professor Raymond Knapp, Co-chair This dissertation explores queer processes of identification with the genre of musical theater. I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure The 'good parts' version abridged by WILLIAM GOLDMAN one two three four five six seven eight map For Hiram Haydn THE PRINCESS BRIDE This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it. How is such a thing possible? I'll do my best to explain. As a child, I had simply no interest in books. I hated reading, I was very bad at it, and besides, how could you take the time to read when there were games that shrieked for playing? Basketball, baseball, marbles—I could never get enough. I wasn't even good at them, but give me a football and an empty playground and I could invent last-second triumphs that would bring tears to your eyes. School was torture. Miss Roginski, who was my teacher for the third through fifth grades, would have meeting after meeting with my mother. "I don't feel Billy is perhaps extending himself quite as much as he might." Or, "When we test him, Billy does really exceptionally well, considering his class standing." Or, most often, "I don't know, Mrs. Goldman; what are we going to do about Billy?" What are we going to do about Billy? That was the phrase that haunted me those first ten years. I pretended not to care, but secretly I was petrified. Everyone and everything was passing me by. I had no real friends, no single person who shared an equal interest in all games.

“West Side Story” (Original cast recording) (1957) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Robert L. McLaughlin (guest essay)* Original “West Side Story” cast members at recording session (from left: Elizabeth Taylor, Carmen Gutierrez, Marilyn Cooper, Carol Lawrence) “West Side Story” is among the best and most important of Broadway musicals. It was both a culmination of the Rodgers and Hammerstein integrated musical, bringing together music, dance, language and design in service of a powerful narrative, and an arrow pointing toward the future, creating new possibilities for what a musical can be and how it can work. Its cast recording preserves its score and the original performances. “West Side Story’s” journey to theater immortality was not easy. The show’s origins came in the late 1940s when director/choreographer Jerome Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, and playwright Arthur Laurents imagined an updated retelling of “Romeo and Juliet,” with the star- crossed lovers thwarted by their contentious Catholic and Jewish families. After some work, the men decided that such a musical would evoke “Abie’s Irish Rose” more than Shakespeare and so they set the project aside. A few years later, however, Bernstein and Laurents were struck by news reports of gang violence in New York and, with Robbins, reconceived the piece as a story of two lovers set against Caucasian and Puerto Rican gang warfare. The musical’s “Prologue” establishes the rivalry between the Jets, a gang of white teens, children mostly of immigrant parents and claimants of a block of turf on New York City’s west side, and the Sharks, a gang of Puerto Rican teens, recently come to the city and, as the play begins, finally numerous enough to challenge the Jets’ dominion.

Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

  • CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS AMERICAN PLAYS by CLIFFORD ODETS and OTHER PLAYWRIGHTS DURING 1930S

Visalam Head, Department of English, Sri Muthukumaran Arts and Science College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India Received: 31 Mar 2018 Accepted: 04 Apr 2018 Published: 07 Apr 2018 ABSTRACT American Plays had a tremendous response during 1930s and several genre of plays were staged at all corners of America and the Americans were fond of enacting and viewing the plays. The genre of plays will vary based on the American people mindset and the political situations. Several playwrights followed Hollywood techniques for writing their scripts. The role of playwright was found to be more vital than the role of an actor or the Director or the Production Company. The contribution of the playwrights during 1930s was considered to be a trend setting period in changing the roles of a writer from technician to becoming an artist. KEYWORDS : Playwright, Writer, Script, Actor, Play, Drama, Theatre INTRODUCTION During the 1930s, the playwrights followed Hollywood’s technique for paying writers for their scripts. Theatres such as Group Theatre and the Theatre Guild supported this idea to consider writers as autonomous artists whose function was very important than any other member of the company.
