Opening with acclaimed dramatist Terrence McNally’s MOTHERS AND SONS, the six production season will include the magical story telling of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER based on the novel by Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson; an Olivier Award winning new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s GHOSTS; a piercing glimpse into the teen-age world in Kirsten Greenidge’s MILK LIKE SUGAR; Byrony Lavery’s unflinching drama FROZEN; and the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller SWEENEY TODD. “Through a variety of lenses, periods and styles, we are looking at the ways in which parents and children navigate the seemingly uncharted path out of childhood and into adulthood.” shares Artistic Director Mathew Wright. In addition to the six show season, ArtsWest is pleased to announce a co-production with ACT and Circle X Theatre Co. in the presentation of an incendiary new rock musical BAD APPLES, directed by ACT Artistic Director John Langs at ACT’s Falls Theatre in the fall of 2016. Valour! Compassion! Corpus Christi, Master Class) portrays a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son’s partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as she revisits the past and begins to see the life her son might have led. GHOSTS By Henrik Ibsen Adaptation by Richard Eyre January 19 – February 11, 2017 2014 Olivier Award Winning Best Revival Illuminated with fresh poetry and dark humor in a stunning new adaptation from acclaimed British director Richard Eyre, Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts was seen as a scandalous work when it was first performed in 1892. The story follows the widow Helene Alving as she tries to start her life anew after the death of her philandering husband. She is determined that her son Oswald will not follow the same path through life as his father, but when Oswald returns home from a trip to France, she discovers that she may already be too late. MILK LIKE SUGAR By Kirsten Greenidge March 2 – March 25, 2017 2012 Obie Award Winner 2011 Edgerton Foundation Winner (New American Play Award) 2011 San Diego Critics Circle Craig Noel Award Winner (Outstanding New Play) It is Annie Desmond’s sixteenth birthday and her friends have decided to help her celebrate in style, complete with a brand new tattoo. Before her special night is over, however, Annie and her friends enter into a life altering pact. When Annie tries to make good on her promise to her friends, she is forced to take a good look at the world that surrounds her. She befriends Malik, who promises a bright future, and Keera, whose evangelical leanings inspire Annie in a way her young parents have not been able to do. In the end Annie’s choices propel her onto an irreversible path in this story that combines wit, poetry, and hope. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up.     The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection Processed by Joan Cannon 2007 Memphis and Shelby County Room Memphis Public Library and Information Center 3030 Poplar Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38111 Scope and Content The Theatre Memphis Programs Collection was donated to the Memphis Public Library and Information Center by many individual donors over several years. Consisting of programs from performances at Theatre Memphis between the years 1975 and 2007, the collection provides invaluable information on the operation of community theatre in Memphis. Each program includes the names of the director, cast and crew as well as information on the production. Theatre Memphis was established as the Little Theatre in 1921. For several years plays were performed in a variety of locations in Memphis including Germania Hall and the Nineteenth Century Club. In 1929 the Little Theatre was headquartered at the Pink Palace Museum Playhouse where they would remain until the mid-1970s. When the Pink Palace closed for renovations, the theatrical company opened their own venue on Perkins Extended in East Memphis. She recently starred on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim / James Goldman critically acclaimed production of Follies, following a successful run at the Kennedy Center. Prior to that, she starred opposite Elaine Stritch in the Stephen Sondheim / Hugh Wheeler Tony Award- winning masterpiece, A Little Night Music. In 2012, Bernadette was honored with her third Tony Award, The Isabelle Stevenson Special Award that acknowledges an individual from the theatre community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations. Recently, Peters added author and songwriter to her roster of achievements with her debut children’s book, Broadway Barks, aptly named after the organization she co-founded with good friend, Mary Tyler Moore. The book landed on the New York Times Bestseller list shortly after publication. The organization’s annual star-studded animal adoption event takes place in Shubert Alley in the heart of NYC’s theater district, and benefits over 20 animal shelters in and around the New York City area. The book package includes a CD recording of an original song written and sung by the author. Her second children’s book, Stella is a Star features yet another of her original songs, of which all proceeds from the sale of both books go to Broadway Barks!. In November 2009, Peters performed a special one-night-only concert in New York City at the Minskoff Theatre, called “Bernadette Peters: A Special Concert for Broadway Barks Because Broadway Cares”, which benefitted both Broadway Barks and Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS.
