With each production, BoHo Theatre explores one of the bohemian pillars of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. The stories we share ask us to examine how these pillars affect the relationships we experience or encounter in our everyday lives. With , we delve into the complicated, funny, and heartbreaking pillar of “love.”

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC has all sorts of love: secretive, unrequited, passionate, emotionless, sexual, and sexless (to name a few). All are kinds of love that are relatable, and the story is crafted in such a clever and hilarious way that it’s easy to fall in love with this show. For me, though, the central relationship between Fredrik and Desiree is the window into the heart of the show. Their relationship is the most complex, and it contains an element of love that I find fascinating: regret.

There is a longing for the past that Desiree and Fredrik share… a “what if” that drives their story. It fascinates me how much that question drives us towards and away from one another. It makes us reflect on the past, and also greatly alters our future. It is such a small question, with such a dramatic impact on the love in our lives.

We don’t all get second chances, as Fredrik and Desiree do, but then again, I can’t help wondering: when it’s all said and done, “what if” we end up exactly where we’re supposed to be where love is concerned?
