LEEDS - Your presence is important!

Next July 20 to 27, the entire world-wide family of Faith and Light is invited to an International Meeting in Leeds, U.K. for a “ a time of reflection and of sharing” and “to deepen … [it’s] commitment to the spirit of the Charter” of Faith and Light.

A General Assembly of all the provinces of Faith and Light will also be held, five years after the last Assembly in Lourdes in 2008 when the new Constitution was ratified.

Five years already! The world has changed over those years. Faith and Light has as well. There were the formation of the new provinces, the implementation of the new Constitution and the election of the new provincial teams, eight international formation sessions attended by more than 350 members, the 40th anniversary celebrations, more than 50 pilgrimages around the world, to mention only these.

It is now important that we bring together all these experiences and share on the beauty of these changes, the challenges met and the improvements that may be required in the future.

A Project Team comprised of Ghislain du Chéné, International Coordinator, Claude Gravel, of the Board of Directors and Alain Saint-Macary, friend of Faith and Light and a member of L’Arche have consulted you on your experiences of the last five years and on your assessment of them. Their preliminary report will be sent out to you soon so that you may take notice of the results of this exercise and to invite you to reflect on their findings and the proposed priorities for the coming years.

It is in Leeds that this reflection will be completed by a vote of the members of the General Assembly deciding the priorities for the coming five years and their choice of the team that will be tasked to implement them, a team comprised of the International Coordinator, the President and the members of the Board of Directors and also of several Vice-international coordinators..

It is when we shall all be together that the Spirit will speak to us!

Faith and Light is a very diversified movement, with provinces, various communities often living in very different worlds. It is when we are all together that we are able to observe our diversity and our uniqueness, to come to understand it and to live it. An experience that has profoundly touched me wherever I have travelled. And that impresses everyone, without exception.

It is when we are all together that we can understand that what we do at home is good and that what is done elsewhere is good as well. We come to understand that there are many different ways to live out our mission molded by the reality that is ours wherever we are in the world. The languages may be different, the financial means at our disposal may be different, but the love, the sharing and the joy in our communities are the same wherever we are.

We have to relive during this international meeting what is lived in each of our communities. People from very different backgrounds come together. We open our hearts to these differences, we discover all their riches, and we seek to bridge the distance that may exist between us so as to share that which is common to all of us.

It is together, around the same table, when sharing the bread and the wine, when praying, by listening deeply to each other, that we will be able to converse and to be guided by the Spirit.

And it is important that those sitting at that table be as representative as possible of the movement; that there be delegates from all the provinces, those nearby and those from far away.

A family dinner is incomplete if someone is missing and everyone has the duty by his efforts or by his contributions to insure that all the others are present and that no one is absent from the feast.

It is not only important that there be delegates from each province, but also that these delegations be as complete and as representative as possible of the reality in each of our provinces around the world. Only then will we be able to speak with certainty of our different realities in the world and of our needs and of our hopes for the future.

I invite you wholeheartedly to this meeting. Do not miss this opportunity to meet again, to renew the bonds created during the international pilgrimages, to create new friendships and to live this unique experience that is an international meeting of the great Faith and Light family

In conclusion, I also wish to say that Louise and I were profoundly touched by the many messages of sympathy and by the words of encouragement received from many of you around the world following the death of Louise’s mother. We thank you dearly and hope to have the opportunity to thank you in person during the meeting in Leeds.

There are still a lot of vulnerable people who aren’t in a community and don’t have friends. Still too many parents who don’t know about Faith and Light and that you can celebrate joy there. Faith and Light is called to be a missionary. We are the messengers of Good News! Each person can say to his/her friends: I am part of a community where there is happiness and celebration, we are like children of God there celebrating life, finally like human beings. Each person, with our difficulties and weaknesses, but we love one another. To love isn’t doing things for people. What we learn in Faith and Light is to revel in the other: “You are more beautiful than you dare to believe”, to the weakest as well as the less weak: “You are important and precious. You have a value and you too can be a messenger of joy and peace. You, you have a mission.” Each one of us has a mission on Earth. We, who have the grace of knowing and experiencing Faith and Light, are personally, as well as a whole community, to announce this good news. . Jean Vanier

Pilgrimages 2012

The final curtain! tasty, all so beautiful! About fifty times, our song “Messengers of Joy” was sung!

But we had to stop one day... and on that day, about a hundred people gathered for the last big celebration. There were members from the 5 South African communities (from Cape Town and Johannesburg), that Elinata, coordinator of the Capricorn Africa province, joined from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Volunteers were invited to help and discover the beauty of our communities. The program was very intense: games, singing and dancing (see video), a few speeches, prayer, meals, liturgy…

At the end of the meal, we shared a big cake, decorated with a picture of the cover of our last Guidelines on it: Guidelines that proved excellent and very nourishing!

The liturgical time focused on two symbols: the breaking of the bread, introduced through the Gospel of the Pilgrims of Emmaus, and the anointing with oil of everyone’s forehead with a word of blessing. The curtain came down on November 10, 2012 in Fish Hoek, near Cape Town in South Africa. When Benjamin was two years old, during a pilgrimage to Fatima, I met a very old man, the father of a disabled woman. He said to me: “In the evening of my life, I believe that it is a grace to have a child with a disability.” At that time, I let the words fall into a corner of my heart, but today I am not far from believing it – when he spoke of grace, this old man was in fact talking about the presence of God. His words have deeply moved me. When I learnt that Benjamin, the third of our six children, was trisomic, a few hours after his birth, I I have never wanted from God. In Belgium, welcomed by Maronite Monks!

An abbey was built and became a place of pilgrimage. Over the centuries, this abbey, taken by the Premonstratens, was extensively extended and increased the number of buildings. I thank you for the very warm message you addressed to us on the occasion of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Faith and Light: "Many Faith and Light communities have grown throughout the world. May they repeat to the heart of each disabled person the words of Pope Paul VI: ‘You are loved by God just as you are’ and help them to then continue their pilgrimage in life with peace and joy within, surrounded by brothers and sisters who are happy to share with them the love that God brings in this blessed way to the smallest and weakest! May the celebration of this anniversary be a joyful message of hope for disabled people, for their families and their friends!"

I was happy to have the opportunity to greet you on October 26th, 2011. When I introduced myself, I noticed how you smiled when you heard the name of Faith and Light. It confirmed that our mission with the most fragile of us had a privileged place in your heart and in your prayers. To the contrary, rejecting persons with disability brings tensions and conflicts; if we refuse to meet persons with disabilities we are denied the grace that they alone can offer. Eliminating persons with disabilities lead us into "structures of sins" !

When one of our communities feel too weak to go on meeting regularly, we invite them to give thanks for this new step in their lives. We encourage them to continue the friendship particularly through prayer.

Most Holy Father, this is also what you chose to do. The prayer of the most fragile is particularly welcome in the heart of God. This is our experience in Faith and Light! I personally learned it from my daughter Julie, born with Down Syndrome. That is why I am sure that your prayers for the Church and for the world will give us strength, courage and audacity to follow your call for a new Evangelization.
