It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

The seminal insight of Congar’s adaptation of the triplex munera is illumined by situating his work within his historical and ecclesiological context. Noonan, Jr.* The two marriages of Charles, Duke of Lorraine, led to one of the most fascinating canonical trials of the seventeenth century. Professor Noonan uses this trial and its attendant circumstances as a springboard from which to examine the policies, procedures, and politics of post-RenaissanceRoman Catholic law. His Article under- lines the problems faced by a legal system that attempts to regulate the relationshipbetween man and woman. In broader perspective, it analyzes the reaction of a legal system forced to compromise between abstract social values and practical necessity. Professor Noonan's analytical framework can be profitably utilized as a tool to examine the manner in which our current social policies are implemented and administered. Anthropology rightly devotes great effort to deciphering the primi- tive attempts of men to make law in the primordial patterns, for from this effort will come material to illuminate our own behavior. But just as child psychology does not exhaust the study of man, so there is need to understand critically the functions of law in a more sophisticated phase. In its developed uses we are more likely to see analogues to our present problems, more likely to gain insights into the purposes, perver- sions, characteristics, and limits of the legal way of ordering human behavior in a mature society. Especially is this true of a system far enough removed from our own to be looked at from a distance but close enough in its assumption and its methods so that comprehension is not strained.

    Pope says pastors must ‘serve, not use’ laypeople By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY – Clericalism is a danger to the Catholic Church not only because on a practical level it undermines the role of laity in society, but because theologically it “tends to diminish and undervalue the baptismal grace” of all believers, whether they are lay or clergy, Pope Francis said. “No one is baptized a priest or bishop,” the pope said in a letter to Cardinal Marc Ouellet, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. The fundamental consecration of all Christians occurs at baptism and is what unites all Christians in the call to holiness and witness. In the letter, released at the Vatican April 26, Pope Francis said he wanted to ensure that a discussion begun with members of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America March 4 “does not fall into a void.” The topic of the March discussion, he said, was on the public role of the laity in the life of the people of Latin America. In the letter, Pope Francis said that in lay Catholics’ work for the good of society and for justice, “it is not the pastor who must tell the layperson what to do and say, he already knows this and better than we do.” “It is illogical and even impossible to think that we, as pastors, should have a monopoly on the solutions for the multiple challenges that contemporary life presents,” he said. “On the contrary, we must stand alongside our people, accompany them in their search and stimulate their imagination in responding to current problems.” Pastors are not conceding anything to the laity by recognizing their role and potential in bringing the Gospel to the world; the laity are just as much members of “holy, faithful people of God” as the clergy, the pope said.

GRES-GAYER The Catholic University of America HERE is an enigma about Unigenitus, the ill-fated bull issued by Pope TClement XI (1713) against the resurgence of Jansenism. If the Jansenist movement in general has continued to attract scholars, whose recent contributions are changing perspectives,1 the constitution that condemned 101 "Jansenist propositions" extracted from the Réflexions morales was until recently left scrupulously untouched. It seemed taken for granted as an inevitable pivot—either a terminus ad quern, the logical conclusion of a century of theological and political disputes, or a terminus a quo, the origin of a movement of rebellion that eventually developed into a revolution.2 In other words, it was considered more a catalyst or an excuse for a latent social and political conflict than its real cause; hence the interest manifested in its prolegomena or later development rather than in the document itself. It was the document itself, however, the solemn exercise of the papal magisterium, that stimulated what was then perceived as the major crisis in Catholic history. The animosities, the political schemes, and the negotiations which accompanied its preparation, the uproar, the renewed negotiations, and the conflicts which followed its publication, suggest that there was more to this document than a collection of 101 condemned extracts from a spiritual book. But what was Unigenitus all about?     Pope Francis Visit to Geneva, update The French Catholic magazine La Croix International published an interview of a World Council of Churches (WCC) leader on May 31, to update their readers on Pope Francis' June 21 visit. Pastor Martin Robra, co-secretary of the mixed working group between the World Council of Churches and the Catholic Church, "credits Pope Francis with ushering in a new springtime for ecumenism." This working group, set up in 1965, is the answer to the continually discussed challenge of the Catholic Church formally joining the WCC. One of the main problems of Catholic membership is the size of the Catholic Church. It outnumbers all the other 348 members of the World Council of Churches. This is one of the several reasons the Catholic Church has not formally joined. However, there is membership by Catholics on the Faith and Order Commission, and the Mission and Evangelism Commission. The Catholic Church is considered an "Observer" in the entire structure of the WCC. Robra also contrasted the upcoming visit of Pope Francis, with previous visits to the WCC headquarters in Geneva by Popes Paul VI and John Paul II. When they visited Geneva, they did not concentrate so much on going to the WCC headquarters. And he said "Pope Francis comes first of all as head of the Catholic Church. ..We hope that together we can continue a pilgrimage of justice and peace to those at the margins of societies, those yearning for justice and peace in this violence-stricken world and its unjust political and economic relationships."     Vol. 2 No. 1 (November 2009) Henry Lawson and the Salvation Army – Stuart Devenish. On February 19, 2009 Salvation Army Major Bob Broadbere (retired) presented a lecture entitled 'Henry Lawson and his place in Salvation Army History' to an audience of approximately 70 people, mainly Salvation Army officers and soldiers at the Salvation Army’s Booth College campus at Bexley North, Sydney. The connection between Lawson and the Salvation Army has held an enduring fascination for Broadbere who has amassed a comprehensive personal library on Henry Lawson and his association with the Salvation Army. Having corresponded with the late Prof. Colin Roderick (editor of the 3 volume Henry Lawson, Collected Verse, A & R, Sydney, 1966-8) Broadbere is something of a specialist in the field. His interest in Henry Lawson sprang to life when Broadbere himself lived and worked in the St Leonards-North Sydney areas where Lawson had lived. Permission was obtained from Major Bob Broadbere to reproduce here some of his research as presented in his lecture. The ‘Army’ in Lawson’s Poetry The connection between Henry Lawson and the Salvation Army remains largely unknown in any of the contexts relevant to it, e.g., the Salvation Army, the Christian community, or the wider Australian population. In part this is because writers such as Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson are not so well known nor so carefully read as they once were. Our understanding of the connection between Lawson and the Salvation Army is not helped by the oblique nature of Lawson’s writing about the Army. According to private correspondence between Roderick and Broadbere, Lawson never threw himself on the mercies of the Army despite his alcoholism and illness later in life.
