He was born on 26 December 1682 in England. There is not that much information on Calico Jack's life. It is recorded that he began his pirate journey as a quartermaster on a Ship called the Ranger in 1718 where was captain.

Rackham was part of different robberies of ships outside the coast of New York. He then encountered a war with a French ship twice as big as the one he was in. During the fight his captain Charles Vane decided to retreat from the war, this was a peak moment for Rackham to convince his fellow pirates to remove Vane as a captain and proclaim his as the next captain of the Ranger.

Rackham made a career of plundering small vessels close to shore once he became captain. He and his crew captured the Kingston, a small Jamaican vessel, and made it their flagship. They made several conquests in the West Indies, taking a couple of large ships off of Bermuda.

Rackham had come across a small boat that had nine English pirates, during which they became intoxicated at Dry Harbour Bay in , October 1720. Rackham and his crew were brought to , Jamaica, in November 1720, where they were tried and convicted of and sentenced to be hanged. Rackham was executed in on 18 November 1720.
