This electronic edition has been amended for the errata noted by Dr. MacPhee. - i - THE LIVES OF OUR FATHERS PREFACE TO VOLUME II In Volume I the author has established the surnames of most of our Clan and has proposed the sources of the peculiar name by which our Gaelic compatriots defined us. In this examination we have examined alternate progenitors of the family. Any reader of Scottish history realizes that Highlanders like to move and like to set up small groups of people in which they can become heads of families or chieftains. This was true in Colonsay and there were almost a dozen areas in Scotland where the clansman and his children regard one of these as 'home'. The writer has tried to define the nature of these homes, and to study their growth. It will take some years to organize comparative material and we have indicated in Chapter III the areas which should require research. In Chapter IV the writer has prepared a list of possible chiefs of the clan over a thousand years. The books on our Clan give very little information on these chiefs but the writer has recorded some probable comments on his chiefship.

    History of the Caribbean The history of the Caribbean reveals the significant role the region played in the colonial struggles of the European powers since the 15th century. In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean and claimed the region for Spain. The following year, the first Spanish settlements were established in the Caribbean. Although the Spanish conquests of the Aztec empire and the Inca empire in the early sixteenth century made Mexico and Peru more desirable places for Spanish exploration and settlement, the Caribbean remained strategically important. Political evolution of Central America and the Caribbean from 1700 to present Contemporary political map of the Caribbean From the 1620s and 1630s onwards, non- Hispanic privateers, traders, and settlers established permanent colonies and trading posts on the Caribbean islands neglected by Spain. Such colonies spread throughout the Caribbean, from the Bahamas in the North West to Tobago in the South East. Furthermore, during this period, French and English buccaneers settled on the island of Tortuga, the northern and western coasts of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), and later in Jamaica. After the Spanish American war in the late 19th century, the islands of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines were no longer part of the Spanish Empire in the New World. In the 20th century the Caribbean was again important during World War II, in the decolonization wave after the war, and in the tension between Communist Cuba and the United States. Genocide, slavery, immigration, and rivalry between world powers have given Caribbean history an impact disproportionate to its size.

    Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer.

    This Month in Latin American History Depiction of the sack of Panama March 12, 1671 Henry Morgan returns to Port Royal following the sack of Panama As convoys of silver and other valuable cargo Between Spain and its New World colonies grew, Spain’s European rivals sought ways to profit from that trade. One of the most common tactics was to hire privateers- licensed pirates who sought to pick off ships or raid coastal communities along the main trade routes. In the 1660s, one of the most successful privateers was Henry Morgan of Wales, who had already staged several successful raids around the Caribbean before undertaking his most daring assault yet- an attack on Panama City. Even Before the construction of the Panama Canal in the early 20th century, the city was a crucial nexus of trade, But since it was on the Pacific side of the isthmus, the defenders were not prepared for Morgan’s force, which landed on the Caribbean side and marched across difficult terrain, taking the city almost completely By surprise. Despite the Spanish governor destroying most of the city’s treasury, Morgan’s crew remained for three weeks, and in the aftermath the Spanish reBuilt Panama city in a different, more defensible location. Upon his return to Port Royal, Jamaica, Morgan received a hero’s welcome, But not long afterward he was arrested, since he had technically broken a peace treaty between England and Spain. Though never punished, the Crown made it clear that Morgan was to retire- he was named deputy governor of Jamaica and awarded a large estate there, where he lived out his days in luxury.

  • When Christopher Columbus Came Ashore in 1492, He Wrote in His Diary
    When Christopher Columbus came ashore in 1492, he wrote in his diary, “This is the most beautiful land that human eyes have seen.” He would leave members of his family behind to colonize the island and would return to it after venturing throughout the Caribbean. In his will, he asked to be buried in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was to this island a group of 22, mostly graduate nursing students and faculty from University of San Diego (www.sandiego.edu) , along with one dentist, would travel as a mission endeavor, to improve the health of school children of a rural school. Excitement ran high as the emails & gmails flashed back and forth, final arranges were gelling into a final plan. Were we actually going to the Caribbean? Over six months in the planning, and after 8 prior visits to La Republica Dominicana (Dominican Republic in English, indigenous Taino Indians called it Quisqueya), the trip was finally coming to fruition. It was decided that now was the time to include dental care in the overall plan to help the needy families far into the mountainous area near the international border with Haiti. Destination, El Cercado, to work at the school, Fe y Alegria (“Faith and Gladness”); the goal, examine students and their families in health screening as well as undertake a couple of research projects, one having to do with new techniques for diagnosing diabetes compared to traditional methods. But after having seen the severe need in oral disease, this was the year to begin inclusion of emergency dental care.

    THE MOUNTRAVERS PLANTATION COMMUNITY - INTRODUCTION P a g e | 1044 PART 3 The employed men Chapter 3 Biographies of managers, 1734-1807 Father and son, James and Joseph Browne, 1734-1761 James Browne was the longest-serving manager on Mountravers but a lack of documents meant that relatively few details about his plantation management could be established. Today, the Brownes are best known for their plantation in the parish of St James Windward which was later called Eden and then Eden Browne. The setting of a tale about a death by duel, the old Browne’s estate is now one of the tourist attractions in Nevis. ◄► ▼◄► James Browne may well have come from an old, established Nevis family: in the 1670s there were eight Brownes on the island, including a ‘free Negro’ called John Brown.1 By the early 1700s the number had increased to eleven, mostly through the arrival in 1685 of several Monmouth rebels transported for Governor Stapleton. It appears that James was born in 1710 and the son of James Browne, a member of the Nevis Council.2 James Browne junior studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and was said to have joined the Inner Temple at the age of 16.3 However, he did not follow a legal career but in 1734 was installed as manager on John Frederick Pinney’s plantation.
