(042) 270073 HELPING IN THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT A substantial research project, examining the processes involved in helping and being helped is in its second year. The project which is currently funded by a Uni- versity Research Grant, is conducted by Associate Professor Linda Viney, Dr. Rachael Henry and Dr. Beverly Walker. The initial aim is to develop a model depicting the various aspects of the help giving/help getting relationship. Following the trialing phase, it is hoped the model can be tested out in the various real life helping professions. An ARGS submission has been prepared, which if fruitful will assist in realizing this goal. At present the Department is seeking assistance from people who could devote a few hours to enable data collection. All information is confidential and respond- Associate Professor Viney ents are primarily asked to retell some experiences where they have helped somebody or received help be interested in participating, know someone who from someone. Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer. -
William D. Sullivan, Navy Vice Admiral Bill Sullivan Graduated from Florida
William D. Sullivan, Navy Vice Admiral Bill Sullivan graduated from Florida State University in June 1972. He received his Navy commission in September 1972 following graduation from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. During his 37 years of active duty, Vice Admiral Sullivan served in a variety of sea-going assignments including cruiser, destroyer and frigate class surface ships and aircraft carrier strike group staffs. He commanded the guided missile destroyer USS SAMPSON (DDG 10)during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, deploying to the Red Sea while enforcing United Nations sanctions on Iraq. From 1997 to 1999 he commanded the Aegis guided missile cruiser USS COWPENS (CG 63), deploying to the Persian Gulf and executing Tomahawk strike operations against Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Vice Admiral Sullivan has served in a variety of staff positions. Joint assignments include Director for Pacific Operations on the Joint Staff (J-3), Director for Strategic Plans and Policy (J- 5) at U.S. Pacific Command and Vice Director, Strategic Plans and Policy (J-5) on the Joint Staff. From 1999 to 2001 he served as Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Korea. Prior to his retirement from active duty, Vice Admiral Sullivan served as the U.S. Representative to the NATO Military Committee, NATO Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium. Vice Admiral Sullivan earned a Masters Degree in National Security Studies at Georgetown University in 1990 and a Masters Degree in National Security Affairs at the National War College in 1994. Vice Admiral Sullivan is a member of the Veterans Advisory Board for the Florida State University Veterans Legacy Complex which will house student-veteran programs, the Army and Air Force ROTC offices, and the archives and offices of the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. -

This Month in Latin American History Depiction of the sack of Panama March 12, 1671 Henry Morgan returns to Port Royal following the sack of Panama As convoys of silver and other valuable cargo Between Spain and its New World colonies grew, Spain’s European rivals sought ways to profit from that trade. One of the most common tactics was to hire privateers- licensed pirates who sought to pick off ships or raid coastal communities along the main trade routes. In the 1660s, one of the most successful privateers was Henry Morgan of Wales, who had already staged several successful raids around the Caribbean before undertaking his most daring assault yet- an attack on Panama City. Even Before the construction of the Panama Canal in the early 20th century, the city was a crucial nexus of trade, But since it was on the Pacific side of the isthmus, the defenders were not prepared for Morgan’s force, which landed on the Caribbean side and marched across difficult terrain, taking the city almost completely By surprise. Despite the Spanish governor destroying most of the city’s treasury, Morgan’s crew remained for three weeks, and in the aftermath the Spanish reBuilt Panama city in a different, more defensible location. Upon his return to Port Royal, Jamaica, Morgan received a hero’s welcome, But not long afterward he was arrested, since he had technically broken a peace treaty between England and Spain. Though never punished, the Crown made it clear that Morgan was to retire- he was named deputy governor of Jamaica and awarded a large estate there, where he lived out his days in luxury. -

IAN LOCKWOOD Eravikolam and the High Range (Keralda/India) Ecology and Landscape in an Isolated Indian National Park Photos: Ian Lockwood The southern Indian state of Kerala has long been recognized for its remarkable human development indicators. It has the country’s highest literary rates, lowest infant mortality rates and highest life expectancy. With 819 people per km2 Kerala is also one of the densest populated states in India. It is thus surprising to find one of the India’s loneliest and least disturbed natural landscapes in the mountainous region of Kerala known as the High Range. Here a small 97 km2 National Park called Eraviku- lam gives a timeless sense of the Western Ghats before the widespread encroachment of plantation agriculture, hydro- electric schemes, mining and human settlements. he High Range is a part of the Western Ghats, a heterogeneous chain of mountains and hills that separate the moist Malabar and Konkan Coasts from the semi-arid interiors of the TDekhan plateau. They play a key role in direct- ing the South Western monsoon and providing water to the plateau and the coastal plains. Starting at the southern tip of India at Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin), the mountains rise abruptly from the sea and plains. The Western Ghats continue in a nearly unbroken 1,600 km mountainous spine and end at the Tapi River on the border between Maharashtra and Gujarat. Bio- logically rich, the Western Ghats are blessed with high rates of endemism. In recent years as a global alarm has sounded on declining biodiversity, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka have been designated as one of 25 “Global Biodiversity Hotspots” by Conservation Inter- national. -

KT 12th Duke of Hamilton, 9th Duke of Brandon, 2nd Duke of Châtellerault Second Edition. 1863 Easton Park, Suffolk, England (Demolished 1925) Hamilton Palace, Scotland (Demolished 1927) Brian Boon & Michel Waller Introduction The families residing in the village of Easton, Suffolk experienced many changing influences over their lives during the 92 year tenure of four generations of the Hamilton family over the 4,883 acre Easton Park Estate. The Dukes of Hamilton were the Premier Dukedom of Scotland, owning many mansions and estates in Scotland together with other mining interests. These generated considerable income. Hamilton Palace alone, in Scotland, had more rooms than Buckingham Palace. Their fortunes varied from the extremely wealthy 10th Duke Alexander, H.M. Ambassador to the Court of the Czar of Russia, through to the financial difficulties of the 12th Duke who was renowned for his idleness, gambling and luxurious lifestyle. Add to this the agricultural depression commencing in 1870. On his death in 1895, he left debts of £1 million even though he had previously sold the fabulous art and silver collections of his grandparents. His daughter, Mary, then aged 10 inherited Easton and the Arran estates and remained in Easton, with the Dowager Duchess until 1913 when she married Lord Graham. The estates were subsequently sold and the family returned to Arran. This is an account of the lives of the two passenger paddle steamers and two large luxury yachts that the 12th Duke had built by Blackwood & Gordon of Port Glasgow and how their purchase and sales fitted in with his varying fortunes and lifestyle. -

John Elphinstone (1722-1785)
John Elphinstone (1722-1785) John’s family had lived in Orkney since about 1550, but their lands having been lost or dispersed to various cousins, John’s father, John Elphinstone (1703-1743) came to London and took up a seafaring life, initially in merchant ships and then in the Royal Navy. He married (30th December 1721, St. Mary’s Whitechapel) Ann Williams, daughter of a West India planter, and their son John was born 4th October 1722 and baptised at St. Paul Shadwell, Wapping (the ‘sailor’s church’). At the time John passed his examination for the rank of Lieutenant, on 11th July 1745, he had already been at sea for six years, including in the merchant service in the Mediterranean. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 23rd August 1746, when he was serving on the Scipio. John married Amelia Warburton (1735-1786; daughter of John Warburton, Somerset Herald of Arms and antiquary) in 1750; they had 11 children. By 1757 John was serving on the Royal Sovereign when he was promoted to Commander of the London Buss, which served as a convoy ship to protect the Dutch mails (the Dutch were neutrals during the Seven Years War). On 5th May 1757 he was appointed as Commander of the fireship Salamander, initially going out to the Mediterranean and then serving under Commodore Lord Howe in his campaign against the French Channel ports during the summer of 1758. This involved a series of ‘hit and run’ amphibious attacks on French ports including St. Malo and Cherbourg. After a partially successful attacks on St. -
