Introduction Making, Experiencing and Managing Difference in a Changing Germany Jan-Jonathan Bock and Sharon Macdonald In late August and early September 2015, thousands of asylum seekers from the Middle East were stranded in Hungary’s capital, Budapest. Many complained about heavy-handed mistreatment by the authorities, who also set up new ‘detention centres’ at the country’s southeastern border (Haraszti 2015; Kallius et al. 2016). When thousands of migrants left Budapest to march on a motorway towards Austria – and Germany – the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and her Austrian counterpart, Werner Faymann, took a far-reaching decision. Bypassing the ordinary rules of the EU’s shared asylum system, both leaders agreed to permit asylum seekers entry into their countries to process applications for pro- tection and combat human trafficking. Only two weeks previously, the discovery of seventy-one dead bodies in a locked van on the A4 motorway in Austria – the victims of trafficking – had illustrated the fatal conse- quences of Europe’s insufficient protection schemes for those fleeing con- flict elsewhere (den Heijer et al. 2016). The pressure on European leaders to act further increased after the highly publicized death of a young boy, Alan Kurdi, who drowned on his way to Europe. Images of his lifeless body, washed up on a Turkish beach, shocked the world.1 According to the EU’s Dublin Regulation, asylum seekers ought to apply for protection in the first EU country they reach. In most cases, these are Greece or Italy – two countries that, in the mid 2010s, struggled with unemployment and austerity, and from which asylum seekers sought to continue northwards (Lucht 2012; Redattore Sociale 2015; Trauner 2016). -

Night after night, a boy stands at the window of his parents’ house and watches the sun as it disappears from view behind the rolling hills in the west. He roams through the woods with his friends, building wooden shacks which the foresters destroy. It’s the early sixties. Decades later, Wolfgang Büscher makes his childhood dream come true. He moves to the woods and experiences spring, summer and autumn there. An aristocratic family with a house on the border of Hessen and Westphalia where Büscher grew up gives him access to a hunting lodge in the middle of the woods, in the middle of Germany. This is where he puts up his camp bed. He has no electricity or running water. He prepares himself for quiet times alone, chopping wood and making fires, the odd hunting expedition, hiking, a marksmen’s festival, extreme loneliness and a nightly blackness never seen in the city. The year takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn as storms, heat and plagues of beetles kill half of the woods. And something else happens which turns everything on its head: Büscher’s mother dies that summer, meaning the house he grew up in is left empty, but full of memories. -

The Importance of Osthandel: West German-Soviet Trade and the End of the Cold War, 1969-1991 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Charles William Carter, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Professor Carole Fink, Advisor Professor Mansel Blackford Professor Peter Hahn Copyright by Charles William Carter 2012 Abstract Although the 1970s was the era of U.S.-Soviet détente, the decade also saw West Germany implement its own form of détente: Ostpolitik. Trade with the Soviet Union (Osthandel) was a major feature of Ostpolitik. Osthandel, whose main feature was the development of the Soviet energy-export infrastructure, was part of a broader West German effort aimed at promoting intimate interaction with the Soviets in order to reduce tension and resolve outstanding Cold War issues. Thanks to Osthandel, West Germany became the USSR’s most important capitalist trading partner, and several oil and natural gas pipelines came into existence because of the work of such firms as Mannesmann and Thyssen. At the same time, Moscow’s growing emphasis on developing energy for exports was not a prudent move. A lack of economic diversification resulted, a development that helped devastate the USSR’s economy after the oil price collapse of 1986 and, in the process, destabilize the communist bloc. Zimmer Die «Affäre Suhrkamp» vor bald einem Jahr war im Vergleich eine klare Sache: Ein selbstbewußtes und selbständiges Lektorat verlangte vom Ver- lagsleiter Mitbestimmung; da ihm diese nur in Grenzen gewährt wurde, zogen einige die Konsequenz und gingen. Der Rest waren ideologisierte Animositäten. Die «Affäre Rowohlt», die sich in den letzten Wochen in einer absurd anmutenden, aber dennoch zwangsläufigen Eskalation hochgespielt hat, ist ungleich verwickelter — stellenweise ist sie ein Thriller mit Hintertrep- penelementen, wie ihn Rowohlt nie verlegt hätte. Bei aller Unvergleichlichkeit haben beide Affären – wie andere, weniger spektakuläre auch – so etwas wie einen gemeinsamen Grund. Er besteht in der Aporie: daß revolutionär-sozialistische Literatur von kapitalisti- schen Firmen verbreitet wird; daß sich revolutionäre Autoren der Publi- zitätsmöglichkeiten von Unternehmen bedienen müssen, die sie bekämp- fen; daß Unternehmer Ideen verbreiten, die auf ihre eigene Abschaffung zielen. Man bewegt sich da in dem vagen Terrain zwischen Koopera- tionswilligkeit und; Feindschaft. Es herrscht eine Gereiztheit, in der jede Kleinigkeit eine Detonation auslösen kann. Darum auch ist die «Affäre Rowohlt» kennens- und verstehenswert: nicht nur, weil sie, wie auch immer, an die Substanz eines unserer wich- tigsten Verlagshäuser geht, sondern weil sie ein weiteres Paradigma dar- stellt für die Beziehungen zwischen «Revolution», und «Establishment»; weil sie die Problematik des «Liberalismus» heute in aller Kraßheit vor Augen stellt. Zu verstehen ist das, was im Reinbeker Rowohlt Verlag geschah, nur aus einer detaillierten Chronologie der Vorfälle. -

The Book Under Review Nina Engelhardt's book is a study of four novels by three authors, Hermann Broch's trilogy The Sleepwalkers [2, 3], Robert Musil's The Man without Qualities [21, 23, 24], and Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day [27, 28]. Her choice of authors and their novels is motivated by the impact the mathe- matics of the interwar period had on their writing fiction. It is customary in the humanities to describe the cultural ambiance of the interwar period between World War I and World War II as modernism. Hence the title of Engelhardt's book: Mod- ernism, Mathematics and Fiction. Broch and Musil are indeed modernist authors par excellence. Doherty has been a vice president of literary development at Sony Pictures Entertainment where he worked on a wide range of book to film and television projects, among them The New York Times bestselling sci-fi thriller Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, The New York Times bestseller The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, the Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Attica Prison uprising Blood in the Water by Heather Ann Thompson, and The New York Times bestselling military memoir Red Platoon by Clinton Romesha. Literaturmagazin (Rowohlt): An Index Adam Siegel Copyright © 2017 by Adam Siegel Literaturmagazin (Rowohlt) Index / 1 Introduction Am Anfang das Manifesto, a stance that the most conflicted and complex publishing house in West Germany could take without risk of irony: "Für eine neue Literatur - gegen den spätbürgerlichen Literaturbetrieb." Rowohlt Verlag, pioneer of the German paperback, the Manny Farber termite of West German publishing (Suhrkamp, of course, the white elephant). Literaturbetrieb -- typical German summation. Previously, the German Literaturbetrieb had been dominated by Gruppe 47. After the suspension of Gruppe 47, after 1968, the field lay open. Rowohlt's commitment to "die neue Literatur," both in the Literaturmagazin and the companion series Das neue Buch can be read in retrospect as a cultural history of West Germany during the seventies (which we might demarcate as having taken place between the 1972 Munich Olympics and the fall of Helmut Schmidt's government). The Seventies: “Atmosphäre muss gereinigt werden von allen (rechten und linken) Spielarten des Obskurantismus und Opportunismus, von dem Pfaffentum, das heute die marxistische Lehre verwaltet, ebenso wie von der bürgerlichen Feuilletonmafia.”1 Of course Rowohlt continued to publish Literaturmagazin until 2001. As the eighties progressed, the contents remained engagé, but more international. Which is to say, less German. Verlagsprogramme als Geschichte.
