Franziska Fischer Das warme Licht des Morgens The Warm Light of Dawn

Droemer, April 2017, 384 pages

Following ‘The Night of the Migrating Birds’, the Berlin-based author Franziska Fischer presents another poignant and deeply poetic novel in ‘The Warm Light of Dawn’, in which, with great sensitivity and psychological tact, she writes about life after a blow of fate and about the healing power of love.

The light, the colours and the expression in a stranger’s eyes – these are the ingredients that Levi needs for his poems and stories. But when he loses his sight while saving a little girl from a fire, his world collapses around him. Never being able to see again also means never being able to find the right words again. In desperation he withdraws more and more from life. Until one day he meets Rea, the waitress in the café where he always goes to eat. She becomes his confidante; he learns to see again through her eyes and to write through her hands. She has also had to deal with a great loss that weighs far heavier than Levi’s blindness, but this is something she wants to keep from him at all costs.

The author: Franziska Fischer was born in 1983 in Berlin and continues to live there after her studies in German and Spanish Philology at the University of Potsdam. She works as a freelance author and editor. FICTION

Michaela Grünig Zwei fast perfekte Schwestern Two Almost Perfect Sisters

Knaur, August 2017, 432 pages

The new novel by Michaela Grünig is a warm-hearted humorous story about two disparate sisters and their path to happiness and love: Since childhood, the editor Stefanie Lenz has admired her older sister Lily, who definitely got the better draw of the parental gene pool. Lily is beautiful and married to a fabulous man. Stefanie on the other hand often feels overwhelmed by everyday life. How, for example, do you save yourself from a declaration of love from your new boss without ruining your career? Stefanie appears to have a brilliant idea: she simply says she is a lesbian. Luckily Lily is available as her plus one for the office party. As the publisher’s ‘token lesbian’ things are going well for Stefanie, soon she’s allowed to cover the bestseller author Bernhard Otto. Unfortunately he is surprisingly nice, and then her alibi partner Lily, whose life seems to be in free fall following her husband’s unfaithfulness, drops out.

The author: What if … instead of completing the sensible university course, a girl where to work as a party girl on Ibiza? Had done a runner with an Argentinian polo player instead of choosing the marriage-suitable tax advisor? Or had ‘simply gone’ and bought a one-way ticket to LA? Would the aforementioned woman now be walking down the red carpet to the Oscars as George Clooney’s girlfriend? Or as a neurotic drunk on the highway to hell? These are the sorts of thoughts that I daydream about. And, as I sadly – like most people – only have one life to live, I let the characters in my novels try out these crazy thoughts for me! So as to make things easy, most of them share my characteristics – the good and the bad! I have my best ideas when I head out for a forest walk with my three dogs.

Corinna Vossius Man hat ja seinen Stolz

We Have Our Pride After All

Knaur, April 2017, 288 pages

In her warm-hearted novel ‘We Have Our Pride After All’, Corinna Vossius shows that life beyond eighty is not for the faint hearted, but is also certainly not over. With a wink and a lot of respect for her protagonists, she designs a humorous story about aging, dying and inheriting.

Her unusual heroines, the sisters Lili and Berta Berburg, who look ever more similar as they age, ‘share’ a place in the retirement home in order to each be cosseted for half the week without having to leave their cosy little home. But when Nurse Ruth becomes concerned about the erratic character of ‘Mrs Berburg’ and fears the beginnings of dementia, this brings a niece onto the scene who has long had an eye on the ladies’ property. Luckily Nurse Ruth is not the dragon that Lili thinks she is and accepting help is not as bad as Berta feared.

The author: Corinna Vossius, born in 1963 in Darmstadt, has been living in Norway with her husband and two daughters since 1999. She currently works as a senior doctor in the state health system in Stavanger and has a research unit on the subject of Dementia. Although the two women are extremely different: While Maria, who marries the forest official Werner against her family’s will, is questioning her marriage, the English woman Vivien suffers terribly from the separation from her husband Philipp. With every letter that arrives from Werner, Maria attempts to break through the distance that has come between them and to write him a few loving words. Vivien on the other hand, who has sought refuge at the gates of Munich so as not to endanger her husband who is in the resistance, is just waiting for a sign to return to him. While Maria finds it hard to have a good rapport with her dreamy daughter Anna, Vivien and her daughter Antonia are very similar. Reading Life

Droemer, March 2017, 272 pages

What blood reveals about our future New blood tests and their consequences: A controversial scientific work and a committed debate about progress and ethical responsibility within science and medicine, politics and society. Laboratories are working flat out to develop testing procedures that make previously hidden information in blood recognisable, revealing medical conditions much earlier than previously possible – and this with much higher precision and a comparatively low workload and a low risk for the test person. Ulrich Bahnsen explains this radical development using concrete examples of early cancer diagnosis (amongst others as a replacement for mammography screening), of prenatal diagnosis and research on the biological processes of aging (internal clock). Above all, he confronts us with the questions of ethics that this revolution within the field of medicine raises: How will we deal with this knowledge (key word - life choices)? How can we decide what we want to know and what now (key word - personal responsibility)? And what happens when this information falls into the wrong hands (key word - abuse of data)? Pharmaceutical companies are already fighting for a share of this market, which promises vast profits …

Droemer, April 2017, 336 pages

The digital generation is revolutionising the vocational world. In this debate book, Germany’s youngest management consultant, Philipp Riederle, explains how the digital generation really works: Many companies fear they will have difficulties in finding well qualified junior staff, as the generation that is currently forcing its way onto the market – the so-called mobile phone generation – is considered spoilt and only out to have fun. This is where Philipp Riederle butts in as a mediator between young and old, explaining his contemporaries’ life realities and expectations. He verifies: We are definitely not a generation of wimps. We are well qualified, very flexible and have enormous innovative potential. We want to design, change and communicate with our peers at eye level. Work has to fit our lives, it has to have a purpose and it must motivate. Under these assumptions, says Philipp Riederle, his generation will really contribute to the company – as the 24 to 30-year olds of today know: The future is ours.

What our yearning for Heimat does with us – a topical diagnosis. A feeling of Heimat is still possible today – but not through incantation of the past, says the features section writer, philosopher and publisher Christian Schüle. He describes the loss of the familiar and the lack of trust. Both dictate the current debate about the term Heimat and fuel the fear of the unknown. Against the backdrop of the refugee crisis and migration, Heimat is currently changing faster than ever before in Germany. Political, economic and social boundaries are dissolving in the triumphal march of globalisation. The world is becoming ever more unclear, and the number of those lamenting the loss of security and comfort are increasing. The key words globalisation, refugees and migration are not only the most prominent characteristics of Heimat, but have also become the battle cry in politics and society. ‘How can we overcome this challenge?’ Christian Schüle asks in his political essay. His conclusion: The loss of Heimat is a phantom pain – as those affected glorify the past and are hardly prepared to see the possibilities available in the present and future to help them combat their fears. In his contribution to the debate, Christian Schüle shows us what the possibilities are and how we can use them to strengthen our democracy. ‘One of the best political features writers in Germany.’ SWR about Christain Schüle.

Jasna Zajček Kaltland Cold Country

Droemer, May 2017, 256 pages

Jasna Zajček wants to know what sort of people come to Germany from Syria, how the war has characterised them, what they are hoping for and what drives them. She teaches German to refugees in Saxony, researches Pegida (anti-Islamic German movement) supporters, ‘do-gooders’ and social workers in Berlin and in the western part of Germany. Right- wing populism, the stress of immigration or the topic of integration are questions that Zajcek’s reports get to the bottom of. Cold Country, as fear and resentment spreads even in liberal cities. Cold Country, as many refugees are poorly educated, combine high expectations with low willingness to learn, consider democracy dodgy and CSD disgusting. Cold Country is modern day Germany. SEX & PARTNERSHIP

Heike Kottmann Lass mich dein Kuschelmonster sein Let Me Be Your Cuddle Monster

Knaur, April 2017, 192 pages

A male advice booklet – from frustrated fiend to sextremist

This humorous male typology is the new standard reference for every woman, as with this book she’ll see straight through any man at first glance and will know whether to carry on dating or leave well alone. Women are complicated, men are simpler? Absolutely not. That hasn’t been true for a long time. Back in the day there were softies and machos; today sensitive, vulnerable and complex types dominate the male world. You’re not the type for relationships, want sex (or maybe not) and like to play strange games during the getting-to-know-each-other phase. Women have long lost sight of what’s going on and have no idea where they’re at. Heike Kottmann has had a good look at the male world and has put together a typology in order to provide some relief to this madness. In this entertaining book, the young journalist describes 50 types of men in a humorous and pointed manner, so that women can quickly recognise whether they pulled a winner or a dud.

The author: Heike Kottmann, born in 1983 in Ravensburg, graduated from the Henri Nannen School of Journalism in Hamburg. She worked as an editor for Neon and has written about men and their idiosyncrasies for various women’s magazines. She lives in Munich and has a secret passion for ‘wannabe Casanovas’ and ‘Hobbyists’.

Jens Corssen/Thomas Fuchs Familienglück Family Happiness

Knaur, April 2017, 304 pages

How to achieve a fulfilled parent-child relationship through recognition Personality coach meets paediatric psychologist. Jens Corssen and Thomas Fuchs combine the best parts of their counselling and therapeutic work in form of a new coaching concept for parents and children: Striving for good atonement here and now, rather than projecting individual wishes and expectations on the partner or children is the key to harmonious family life. So: more living in the present rather than planning the future! The other approach is developing a mindset that allows one to always use words of appreciation and recognition and to avoid every possible form of debasement of partners and children. The two experts transmit this knowledge in an entertaining manner, substantiated using numerous pertinent examples. They provide empirical knowledge and innovative approaches for successful parent-child relationships in the modern world.

The authors: Dr Thomas Fuchs has been a child- and youth psychologist for many years as well as a clinical behavioural therapist. He works as a supervisor and systemic coach for groups and corporations and is in high demand as a podium speaker, in particular about new parenting approaches and the compatibility of job, family and partnership.

Michael Schulte-Markwort Kindersorgen Children’s Concerns

Knaur, March 2017, 368 pages

What are the issues that trouble our children and how can we help them? Practical advice from someone who knows how to read children and is also a parental coach: Professor Schulte-Markwort is regularly presented with problems and issues faced by children and youths in his clinic. Often he has to first help them make themselves understood. He therefore listens very carefully when they pour their hearts out to him and let him share their concerns – thereby becoming a mediator between children and their parents. In this book Schulte-Markwort is addressing parents – of young children right through past puberty: Empathetically he presents the children’s perspective and explains in clear terms what is normal and where an illness begins. When is professional help required? And when do we adults have to act and change our stance, in order to accompany our children competently and thoughtfully through life. Through case studies it quickly becomes clear how, for example, fear can develop a momentum of its own. How can nine year-old Deborah be made to go back to school despite her stomach aches and fear of failure? And how to get through to an aggressive teenager who doesn’t give a damn about recriminations and punishment? Thematically all encompassing – from questions about computer usage to child therapy to fear to divorce and anger attacks – Professor Schulte- Markwort, expert for the effects of societal development on children and youths, addresses questions and problems from the lives of today’s children.

The author: Prof. Dr. med. Michael Schulte-Markwort was born in 1956 in Osnabrück and studied Medicine and Philosophy in Marburg and Kiel. Following his training as a specialist as a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Lübeck, he then obtained the additional title of psychotherapist with a specialty in psychoanalysis and psychodrama. In 1997 he became Professor for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Hamburg. He has been Medical Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Altona Children’s Hospital since 2004. Following specialised publications on the subject of Anorexia, among others, he is now looking at the highly topical issue of burnout in children and adolescents, which he was the first to diagnose in Germany. Manfred Mohr Der Bambus-Effekt The Bamboo Effect

Knaur MensSana, April 2017, 208 pages

Surpassing oneself through emotional acceptance The new guide by the bestseller author: Personality development through acceptance using the principles of Daoism. The seminar leader and successful author Manfred Mohr presents his new holistic emotive coaching concept in form of ‘The Bamboo Effect’. The intention is to seize everything that one encounters in life as a chance – especially those things that don’t correspond to one’s own perception. More often than not, one’s own feelings stand in the way. Manfred Mohr’s specially developed 7-step programme with numerous practical exercises for personality development is all about perceiving all emotions not supressing them. Only acceptance and understanding shows what it is that feelings are really doing to us – often they are old stories from childhood that lie hidden deeply within us, still dictating our behaviour in adulthood. Those who can accept everything with interest and care, encounter life with the same calmness and flexibility as bamboo. In a storm, bamboo yields, while a tree snaps. This ancient principle of Daoism is the cornerstone to a happy life.

The author: Dr Manfred Mohr is a chemical scientist. Following many years working in an advisory role for industry, he now successfully works as an author and seminar manager. He became well known in 2011 with his book ‘The Miracle of Self Love’. Since then he has sold more than 300,000 books. Since the death of his wife, the bestseller author Bärbel Mohr, he is raising his twins alone near Munich.

Wighard Strehlow Der Hildegard-Fastenbegleiter The Hildegard Guide to Fasting

Knaur MensSana, Januar 2017, 208 pages

How the soul convalesces and the body heals. The spiritual accompaniment to every fasting cure to rebalance body and soul For Hildegard von Bingen, fasting is the ideal way to free the body and soul from things that weigh it down and things that are destructive or make you ill. The holistic cleansing and rebalancing that takes place during fasting is an important foundation for self- healing. Hildegard von Bingen names 35 spiritual forces or soul strengths that every person carries inside them, and she opposes them with 35 weakening, destructive influences. The book encourages the self-critical uncovering of negative behavioural and thought patterns and to distance oneself from them. An attribution of these strengths and weaknesses to the individual vertebra in the spine offers an additional help in identifying a disruptive, sick-making internal demeanour, in order to then be able to specifically address these and then let them go during the fasting cure.

The author: Wighard Strehlow is the leading expert in Hildegard healing. He lives in Allensbach on Lake Constance, where he also works as a healing practitioner. In addition to his private practice, he also gives lectures and workshops. He has published numerous books on Hildegard medicine. MIND-BODY-SPIRIT
