The fall of the Berlin Wall causes Katharina Elbracht’s life to unravel. The 44-year old woman from Hamburg receives a bundle of letters from East Berlin, which reveal that the woman she has called ‘mother’ all her life is actually her aunt. Deeply shocked, Katharina begins to delve into her family history. She comes across a young love that began with Swing music only to be destroyed by the war, two sisters separated by the wall who formed a lifelong secret pact, and traces of her father, who was considered missing in action since 1945. Her research leads Katharina through half of Germany and to Ireland, where her father is supposed to be living a secluded and lonely life. One day she stands outside an old house and places her hand on the doorbell … The author: Renate Ahrens, who lives in Hamburg and Ireland, narrates this impressive German-German family history in an unadorned and empathetic manner. The magazine FREUNDIN said of the author’s novels: ‘Renate Ahrens tells moving stories in a perceptive manner.’ FICTION Dieter Bednarz Schwer erleuchtet Massively Enlightened Knaur, June 2017, 352 pages Film rights already sold for cinema production! ‘Should you ever be in Hamburg, please do get in touch!’ This is the sort of thing you might say when you’re relaxed under tropical sunshine and having the final Ayurveda treatment of your holiday. But who would actually think that a couple of months later the doorbell might ring and an orange clad monk would be stood outside the door with a beaming smile, not intending to leave anytime soon? Dieter Bednarz’ heroes Maya and Daniel are flabbergasted by the easy-going calmness with which the monk Siri turns their lives upside down within a short space of time. As well as that of their neighbours. Before they know it, their flat turns into a meditation room, yoga is part of their daily routine and they soon question their work-life-balance, their core values and not long after, their marriage. No stone is left standing in their lives. But how on earth do you disinvite a monk? And isn’t that bad for the karma? The author: The film rights for ‘Massively Enlightened’ have already been sold for cinema production. Dieter Bednarz, born in 1956, was political editor of the news magazine DER SPIEGEL for more than half his life and lives in Hamburg with his wife and three daughters, so far without any moments of enlightenment. His earlier books were successful as films and also as television productions under the same title. FICTION Luisa Binder Darf ich dir das Sie anbieten? Let’s be formal Knaur, June 2017, 304pages A novel about an unexpected friendship, a Scandinavian holiday with obstacles and the normal chaos that we call life, full of humour and charm! Ellen is fed up. Her husband Hans has dumped her at the North Cape in the middle of their Scandinavian holiday, to top it all in the camper van that she hates with a passion. As Ellen hasn’t driven a car in years and doesn’t fancy a solo road trip, she wants to wait for her daughter to come and pick her up. But fiddlesticks! Marion doesn’t turn up, but instead sends someone from the German Automobile Club to the North Cape. Ronny of all people, a washed up musical performer who cannot get his life in order and is fighting adulthood with tooth and nail. Reluctantly the two very different companions set off on the journey from Norway to Germany. They experience a road trip of a particular kind as they travel through the infinite Scandinavian forests, past fjords and archipelagos. They not only have to grapple with camper van breakdowns, gigantic Swedes and dead elks, but also have to recognise that neither one of them will reach their goal without the other … The author: Luisa Binder has studied all sorts of art related things in her life that have not really helped her. Nevertheless, she did get a job with an advertising agency. In her free time she likes to visit her parents, who luckily she no longer lives with. Luisa Binder is married and lives in a tranquil small town in the Rhein-Neckar region. She loves raison-free cheesecake and is learning Swedish in her spare time. FICTION Franziska Fischer Das warme Licht des Morgens The Warm Light of Dawn Droemer, April 2017, 384 pages Following ‘The Night of the Migrating Birds’, the Berlin-based author Franziska Fischer presents another poignant and deeply poetic novel in ‘The Warm Light of Dawn’, in which, with great sensitivity and psychological tact, she writes about life after a blow of fate and about the healing power of love. The light, the colours and the expression in a stranger’s eyes – these are the ingredients that Levi needs for his poems and stories. But when he loses his sight while saving a little girl from a fire, his world collapses around him. Never being able to see again also means never being able to find the right words again. In desperation he withdraws more and more from life. Until one day he meets Rea, the waitress in the café where he always goes to eat. She becomes his confidante; he learns to see again through her eyes and to write through her hands. She has also had to deal with a great loss that weighs far heavier than Levi’s blindness, but this is something she wants to keep from him at all costs. The author: Franziska Fischer was born in 1983 in Berlin and continues to live there after her studies in German and Spanish Philology at the University of Potsdam. She works as a freelance author and editor. FICTION Julia Fischer Die Galerie der Düfte The Gallery of Scents Knaur, May 2017, 368 pages A summer novel with a high feel-good factor – to taste, smell and relish reading, and a love story not just for lovers of Florence!
