Burnham2 1 Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN 2 Cognitive Systems, San Antonio, TX Abstract Richard Von Mises (1883-1953), the originator of the birthday problem, viewed statistics and probability theory as a science that deals with and is based on real objects rather than as a branch of mathematics that simply postulates relationships from which conclusions are derived. In this context, he formulated a strict Frequentist approach to probability. This approach is limited to observations where there are sufficient reasons to project future stability – to believe that the relative frequency of the observed attributes would tend to a fixed limit if the observations were continued indefinitely by sampling from a collective. This approach is reviewed. Some suggestions are made for statistical education. 1. Richard von Mises Richard von Mises (1883-1953) may not be well-known by statistical educators even though in 1939 he first proposed a problem that is today widely-known as the birthday problem.1 There are several reasons for this lack of recognition. First, he was educated in engineering and worked in that area for his first 30 years. Second, he published primarily in German. Third, his works in statistics focused more on theoretical foundations. Finally, his inductive approach to deriving the basic operations of probability is very different from the postulate-and-derive approach normally taught in introductory statistics. See Frank (1954) and Studies in Mathematics and Mechanics (1954) for a review of von Mises’ works. This paper is based on his two English-language books on probability: Probability, Statistics and Truth (1936) and Mathematical Theory of Probability and Statistics (1964). -

philosophies Article The Interpretation of Probability: Still an Open Issue? 1 Maria Carla Galavotti Department of Philosophy and Communication, University of Bologna, Via Zamboni 38, 40126 Bologna, Italy; [email protected] Received: 19 July 2017; Accepted: 19 August 2017; Published: 29 August 2017 Abstract: Probability as understood today, namely as a quantitative notion expressible by means of a function ranging in the interval between 0–1, took shape in the mid-17th century, and presents both a mathematical and a philosophical aspect. Of these two sides, the second is by far the most controversial, and fuels a heated debate, still ongoing. After a short historical sketch of the birth and developments of probability, its major interpretations are outlined, by referring to the work of their most prominent representatives. The final section addresses the question of whether any of such interpretations can presently be considered predominant, which is answered in the negative. A Long Story Made Short Probability, taken as a quantitative notion whose value ranges in the interval between 0 and 1, emerged around the middle of the 17th century thanks to the work of two leading French mathematicians: Blaise Pascal and Pierre Fermat. According to a well-known anecdote: “a problem about games of chance proposed to an austere Jansenist by a man of the world was the origin of the calculus of probabilities”2. The ‘man of the world’ was the French gentleman Chevalier de Méré, a conspicuous figure at the court of Louis XIV, who asked Pascal—the ‘austere Jansenist’—the solution to some questions regarding gambling, such as how many dice tosses are needed to have a fair chance to obtain a double-six, or how the players should divide the stakes if a game is interrupted. -

German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject. -

The Evolution of Expressionism In Turn-of-the-Century Vienna: Klirnt and Schiele Stephan Kleinschuster May 6, 1997 AR592 1 1 Until 1897, Classicism in Viennese high art had served as a mimetic construct of the elite society who were both art's staunchest supporters and the purveyors of moral and philosophical values that served as it's staple of judgment. In the following years, from 1898 to 1918, were revolutions of both natures, political and philosophical. The artistic transformation from the Classicism of the Habsburg Monarchy to the expressionism of the Cafe "Nihilism" could be seen most obviously in two of Vienna's foremost artists of the time, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the works of these two artists who seem to crystallize the moral, social, political, and artistic upheaval of early Twentieth Century Vienna. It lS fitting that Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele died six months from one another, both of the Spanish influenza, and both in 1918. It is important to note that even though stylistic variables call for their ultimate contrast, they loved and admired one another, and they both stood for the values that defined Secessionism. Their proximity in philosophy makes it all the more profound to discover their differences. In Klimt came classical objectivity housed in a contemporary conceptual framework. In Schiele came the shift to brutal subjectivity that pushed the limits of this framework. Even though, as will be discussed, the similarity of the subject matter seems to remain a constant, the execution becomes the variable upon which the change becomes dependent. -

Hermann Hesse stands in the international tradition of writers who are capable of expressing themselves in several arts. To be sure, he became famous first of all for his lyrical poetry and prose. How- ever, his thought and language is thoroughly permeated from his ear- liest to his last works with a profound sense of music. Great art- ists possess the specific gift of shifting their creative power from one to another medium. Therefore, it seems to be quite natural that Hesse, when he had reached a stage in his self-development which ne- cessitated both revitalization and enrichment of the art in which he had thus excelled, turned to painting as a means of the self expres- sion he had not yet experienced. "… one day I discovered an entirely new joy. Suddenly, at the age of forty, I began to paint. Not that I considered myself a painter or intended to become one. But painting is marvelous; it makes you happier and more patient. Af- terwards you do not have black fingers as with writing, but red and blue ones." (I,56) When Hesse began painting around 1917, he stood on the threshold of his most prolific period of creativity. This commenced with Demian and continued for more than a decade with such literary masterpieces as Klein und Wagner, Siddhartha, Kurgast up to Der Steppenwolf and beyond. -

This course will attempt to answer those questions through a chronological AS.450.082. MLA Capstone: Portfolio. and thematic investigation of some of the most influential artworks, The MLA Portfolio is a zero-credit Capstone option. Students who select movements, and theories of the past 60 years. Beginning with a close the Portfolio option will take 10 courses in the program (one core course look at mid-century modernism, we will move into a consideration of Pop, and 9 electives), and register for the zero-credit portfolio in their final Minimalism, conceptual art, land art, performance art, postmodernism, semester. The portfolio will be completed within the same semester as AIDS activism, and relational aesthetics. Along the way, we will also the 10th course. APRIL 2015 i Abstract Mass Culture and Individuality in Hermann Broch’s Late Works Janet Pearson This thesis explores Hermann Broch’s thought regarding the relationship between the individual and the mass, in an age of mass-culture. Broch, an Austrian-Jewish intellectual, who emigrated to America in 1938, discussed ideas upon this theme in theoretical essays, including a theory of mass hysteria (Massenwahntheorie) as well as his fictional The Death of Virgil (Der Tod des Vergil). In the study, the analysis of his theoretical work shows that Broch’s views regarding the masses differ from those of other theorists contemporary to him (Le Bon, Freud and Canetti), in that they are closely linked to his theory of value. It also establishes that his ideas about individuality reach back to the earliest philosophers, and that he perceived this dimension of human existence to be changing, through the development of ‘ego- consciousness’. Building upon this, the textual analysis of the Virgil demonstrates that Broch finds similarities between his own era and the age of Augustus, but also indicates that the concept of individuality portrayed in the work goes beyond that discussed in his theoretical writing and points towards a new role for art in the post-industrial age.
