German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject. -

The Search for Stability and the Inevitability of Change in the Writings and Life of Hermann Hesse Victoria Desimoni Faculty Advisor: Amy Laura Hall Divinity School Submitted December 2017 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Victoria Desimoni 2017 Abstract How can human beings, whose main characteristic is to change constantly, find stability or internal stillness? This is a question that concerned Hermann Hesse his whole life. His answer to this question of stability itself changed over time. Hesse started with the belief that stability was acquired by dwelling on a farm, and ended with the conviction that stability as “stillness” is something human beings can never achieve. Hesse’s final answer is that we are wanderers, constantly incomplete, always in process of more. In this project, I look closely at Hesse’s progress of thought from his first answer to his final answer. Hesse asks this question in his first novel Peter Camenzind (1904) and provides a final answer in one of his last novels, Narcissus and Goldmund (1930). I conduct my analysis through the close reading of these two novels, together with a study of Hesse’s historical background from his childhood to his mid-fifties. His historical background is necessary to understand the metamorphosis of his thought. As a way of elucidating Hesse’s ideas, I compare them to Martin Heidegger’s and Jean-Paul Sartre’s philosophical theories. Hesse’s first answer is surprisingly similar to Heidegger’s belief that the way in which we, human beings, are in the world is by “dwelling.” Dwelling is our essence. -

Our father’s house stood tall and bright on a sunlit street. You entered it through a high gate and at once found yourself embraced by coolness, dusk, and stony moist air. A high dark hall silently received you; the red sandstone squares of the flooring led at a slight incline to the stairs, which lay far at the rear, in semidarkness. Many thousands of times I entered through that high gate, and never did I pay attention to gate and hallway, stone flooring and stairs. For these were always merely a passage into another world, “our” world. The hall smelled of stone; it was dusky and high. At the rear of it, the stairs led up out of the dim coolness into light and bright coziness. -

The Book Under Review Nina Engelhardt's book is a study of four novels by three authors, Hermann Broch's trilogy The Sleepwalkers [2, 3], Robert Musil's The Man without Qualities [21, 23, 24], and Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day [27, 28]. Her choice of authors and their novels is motivated by the impact the mathe- matics of the interwar period had on their writing fiction. It is customary in the humanities to describe the cultural ambiance of the interwar period between World War I and World War II as modernism. Hence the title of Engelhardt's book: Mod- ernism, Mathematics and Fiction. Broch and Musil are indeed modernist authors par excellence. Roney Hoseo University Asan, Korea The key to understanding Demian is to realize that, at the end, Emil Sinclair is in Hell. This may come as a shock; it is meant to come as a shock. The novel is based on a grand, masterful irony. The reader is tricked into identifying with Emil Sinclair, the hero, and then finds that he has followed Sinclair right to perdition. Granted, most readers seem to miss this. A scan of comments at Amazon.com shows no trace of such an understanding. The same could be said of a scan of the standard literature on Hesse. Groliers comments, on the novel, that it is “based on the conviction that Western civilization is doomed and that man must express himself in order to find his own nature.” (1) Hesse’s biographer, Ralph Freedman, speaks of “the saviors like Demian who wisely lead him [Sinclair] out of his despair.” Demian is a story in which “Emil Sinclair learned how to overcome the guilt and shame of his childhood and to achieve with the help of his school friend Demian” (2). Theodore Ziolkowski, in his seminal study The Novels of Hermann Hesse: A Study in Theme and Structure, sees Demian as a Christ figure (3). Kathryn Byrnes, in her plot summary for the Hesse Page, also sees salvation, not damnation: Sinclair realizes at this moment that Demian is his salvation. Demian leaves Sinclair with a kiss from Frau Eva, and he leaves him with the assurance that he would forever be a part of him. -

Kirsten Flagstad Kirsten Flagstad in Concert Kirsten Flagstad was born in Hamar (Norway) on 12 July 1895. At the age of eighteen she made her debut in Eugen d’Albert’s »Tiefland« at the National Richard Strauss Theatre of Oslo. Until 1928 Flagstad sang in a mixture of opera and operetta Four Last Songs performances and attempted her first Wagnerian roles. Elsa and Eva, as well as Aida, Mimi and Tosca. In 1932 she sang Isolde at the Oslo National Theatre Wilhelm Furtwängler and her success in the role prompted a summons from Bayreuth. In 1934 World Premiere Flagstad sang Sieglinde and Gutrune at the Festspielhaus. London, 22.05.1950 Gatti-Gasazza, looking to replace Frida Leider, signed Flagstad for, what turned out to be, her spectacular debut as Sieglinde at the Met for the 1935 season. It was soon apparent that she was to become a first-rank Wagner Richard Strauss interpreter and her international career flourished until her retirement in 1957. Three Songs The inclusion of the Strauss songs are of particular interest as they lie out of her San Francisco, 08.10.1950 usual recorded repertoire. Strauss was a composer she dearly loved (therefore we have included the »Desert Island« interview). And she presented the world Richard Wagner premier performance of the »Four Last Songs« at the Albert Hall under Furtwängler 1950. Arias & Duets This important premiere recording is also on this disc, even inspite of the bad with Set Svanholm sound. We do hope that you accept this release, too. As the performance is of San Francisco, 09.10.1949 such great interest we decided to put it on this disc, too - even if it is our credo only to release historical recordings with the best possible sound and sources. -
About Music, Philosophy and Science
JAGNA DANKOWSKA (Warszawa) About music, philosophy and science... ABSTRACT: The text attempts to answer the question whether musicians need a phi losophy of music. The answer to the question of what music contributes to philosophy - a question superordinate in relation to the investigations of the links between phi losophy and music - can be formulated clearly, since we find it in the texts of the most prominent representatives of European philosophical thought, including Schopen hauer, whose ideas are discussed in the paper. These issues are also discussed in lit erature which explores philosophical issues, by such classics of the genre as Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse, whose profound descriptions bring us closer to an under standing of that which music does directly, by expressing spheres beyond words that cannot be expressed otherwise than through music. Karl Popper regards polyphony as the greatest discovery of European culture, and provides evidence of the closeness of science and philosophy. These three levels of approaching the relationship between philosophy and music lead to demonstrating the axiological essence of music, revealed by performers, who make it possible for music to exist to the full in its sonority, un veiling its metaphysical perfection to its listeners. KEYWORDS: philosophy of music, subjectivism, objectivism, authenticity, perfection, mass culture, higher values. The works of Albert Einstein and Thomas Mann, representing some of the greatest achievements of science and art, are rooted in a signifi cant trend of European thought, which examines the links between music and philosophy. This association, which originated in ancient Greece, has accom panied reflection on music and philosophy for more than two and a half thou sand years.
