THE RACE IS ON Record Number of Racers at the 2018 5K Stroke Awareness Run

817 participants laced up their sneakers on Saturday, May 5, for the Mercy 5K Stroke Awareness Run. Beautiful weather and a fun-filled day were enjoyed by race-goers and their families at Mercy’s Family Festival following the race. Proceeds of $21,061 raised at this year’s event benefit the Mercy Stroke Program. This year was especially memorable as the run was dedicated in memory of longtime hospital supporter David Zacharias. In the pre-race ceremony, bib #1 was presented to his son Daniel and the rest of the DZ Runs team, 55 runners strong. Congratulations to all the individual medalists in this year’s race (visit supportmercymerced.org for a complete list) and the overall fastest runner, Raymond Rodriguez with a time of 18:44.6. Pearl Family Dentistry took home the award for the Largest Team for the second year in a row with 83 team members, while team Here for Dennis took home the prize for Craziest Team Hats with their Under the Sea themed headwear. Smooth Operators received honors for the Best Team Selfie. Thank you again to all those who donated and came out to support this great cause. We can hardly wait until next year’s race!

Spring 2018 9 GRATITUDE

ASSOCIATE BOARD SPOTLIGHT

The Associate Board of the Mercy Foundation is comprised of emerging civic and business leaders who are committed to the ongoing success of the Mercy Foundation. The Associate Board members are critical to our mission as they fulfilled a 9 year commitment as Foundation Board Members. Because of this commitment to our mission, they have distinguished themselves as prominent figures in our Foundation’s history.

And one of our most cherished Associate Board members, Betty Stewart, was in attendance this spring at our Annual Associate Board Member Luncheon. Mrs. Stewart was one of the first babies born at Mercy Hospital in 1925; and fifty-nine years later was one of our first Foundation Board members.

In 1984, Mercy Hospital Advisory Board formed a Foundation Board to support the hospital in the community. Bert Crane, then on the board of directors, wondered if Betty might consider being a board member. “Bert, how long do you want me?” she chuckled. “Well let’s say two years,” he replied. “Ok. I’ll do that!” Eleven years later she told Bert that was the longest two years of her life. And now, Betty is going on 34 years of support toward the Mercy Foundation.

If you want to read and learn more about the life of Betty and Don Stewart, visit our website at supportmercymerced.org under “Why Giving Matters”.

During his tenure, Jim held many hats with the Foundation, most recently serving as interim chair of our Board Development - Barb and Walt Adams, to Dr. Donald Carter and Dr. Christian Gallery Committee. Although Jim is leaving the board, we know that he will always remain a member of the Mercy Foundation.

ADVANCING HEALTH CARE Your Investment in our Community is Changing Lives

Mercy Medical Center Merced is now offering a breakthrough approach to surgery in our community with its new da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System.

This revolutionary and minimally invasive technology enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through a few tiny incisions with unmatched dexterity, 3D high-definition vision and superior control. Overcoming the limitations of traditional open surgery, the da Vinci robot seamlessly translates a surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise real-time movements inside the patient.

The significant benefits of this advanced technology include reduced risk of infection, minimal scarring, less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

Procedures performed with the da Vinci Surgical System include the following specialties: cardiothoracic, oncology, gynecology, urology, and gastroenterology.

Thanks to the spirit of generosity of our community we were able to raise approximately $700,000, or nearly half of the cost, for the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. We are culminating the campaign at our biennial Taste of Merced event on Friday, September 28, 2018. Event sponsorships are still available if you would like to support the medical center and the Surgical Services Department.
