Fog Horn July 2011

Volume 7, Issue 7

Annual Community Art Exhibit at the Community Center Fishers Island, by most measures, is a remarkable and unusual place…isolated, but not remote, with changes of the seasons more marked, and occasionally more violent, than elsewhere. The unspoilt natural beauty of the Island and its surrounding water has been inspirational to many. This show is representative of many of the people with ties to the Island, past, present and, in the Hall Gallery, future artists. Many decades ago, The Red Barn Studio hosted the Annual Community Art Exhibit, and, with this show, The Commu- nity Center is pleased to reestablish this tradition. A number of exhibitors have donated work to a silent auction for the benefit of the Programming Committee of the Center. In addition, the canvasses in the Hall are for sale for $10.00 also to benefit the Programming Committee. All proceeds will be used to develop and introduce many of the activities that have been requested by community members. Our show and silent auction will run for three weeks, and we will possibly rotate works along the way. Please enjoy the show, support its cause and come back.

GENERATOR UPDATE: Many people are under the impression that the island's new generator operates like many home generators and will start up the moment power is lost. This is not the case. If there is a power outage on the island the situation is first assessed by talk- ing to Groton Utilities. Then if it is decided to run the generator, it is first disconnected from the underwater cable to insure the safety of anyone in Groton who is working on the problem and then manually started. This process takes in the order of half an hour and a shorter delay will occur when the power from the cable is restored. Since the fuel costs to run the generator are about $500 an hour which will be eventually billed to the FI rate payers, it will not be run if the outage is expected to be relatively short and of low impact to the island - e.g. during warm daylight hours.

Page 11 UPDATE ON 470 TEAM USA! An 8, 11, and 3 in the three races today moves us up to 8th overall! We only have one race on the schedule for tomorrow, and then the medal race on Friday. Points are still close behind us, so we need another good race tomorrow to guarantee a spot in the medal race and move within striking distance of 5th place. For live tracking, and complete scores, please visit the regatta website: http:// www.openeuropeans2011.com For details from today's racing, please read on!

The race committee told us this morning that we would be sailing three races because the forecast for tomorrow, Thursday, was terri- ble. The first race, Race 9, started in an 8-11 knots southwesterly. We had a great start towards the middle of the line. Looking up- wind we saw better pressure towards the right, and we tacked over towards the right. The boats that were further right than us got into better pressure before we did, but we still did well. The right was definitely good! We approached the windward mark in approxi- mately 5th. Great! We lost a couple of boats downwind, but were still close to the front pack. On the second upwind we were duking it out with the Spanish team that's winning the regatta. They were just ahead of us, but we had better speed and kept catching up to them, but couldn't quite pass them. They rounded the windward mark in 6th place, with us just on their heels. We lost one more boat downwind, and crossed the finish line in 8th.

The wind had built a little bit, so we re-tuned our boat for 10-14 knots. We thought the wind had filled evenly across the course, and we decided to start towards the pin, left, end of the line because it was favored. Half way up the first upwind it was apparent that the right was still good, so we ducked a lot of boats in order to get to the right. On the first upwind we were deep, in the 20's, but worked hard throughout the race. We were going fast upwind, dug into the right on the second upwind, and passed a lot of boats, gaining dramatically. We were happy to place 11th.

For the last race of the day, the wind had built even more. We started the race in 15-18 knots. After what had happened in the first two races, we were determined to go right. We had a late start at the boat, right, end of the line, and were the first boat to tack over towards the right. We dug into the right, tacked over onto port, and were well ahead of most of the fleet! We were trading places with GBR 850, but extended towards the right, and rounded the windward mark in 1st! About time! The wind had already started to die, and continued to die as we sailed downwind. We maintained our lead, and rounded the leeward mark still in first, and headed right. By now the wind had dropped to almost 7 knots. Some boats behind us headed left, and we tacked to cover them. To our dismay we saw that the wind was filling in from the top left of the racecourse, and there was nothing we could do about it. All we could do was go as fast as possible in the position we were in. We managed to have decent speed, and the wind shifted back towards the right just enough to put us in 2nd at the windward mark, with GBR 850 ahead of us. GBR 847 passed us downwind, and we crossed the finish line in 3rd. We have sailed six races in the past two days -- almost half of the regatta -- and we are tired. Ready to go to bed, and recharge our batteries for another race! Stay tuned! Erin and Isabelle

Dr. Frank has enjoyed her time with both the Boyz and Girls Clubs and will really miss them. She wishes each and every one the best in their bright future. Lake Compounce in Bristol, Connecticut is the nation’s oldest, continuously operating amusement park. DID YOU KNOW: In 1846, Lake Compounce officially opened to the public as a picturesque “picnic” park, and prospered through the post- civil war era. In 1851, Isaac Pierce, a successful California Gold Rush ‘49er joined owner Gad Norton, and the firm of Pierce and Norton was established. Carousel, roller coaster, and ballroom allowed Lake Compounce to prosper in the 1930’s. Most big bands played Lake Compounce and the all time attendance record of 5000 dancers was set in the spring of 1941 when Tommy Dorsey’s band featured a young Frank Sinatra. During the decade 1986-1996 many amusement parts in New England suffered from neglect, financial hardship and closed. Lake Compounce had numerous abbreviated seasons when the park opened only for Labor Day Weekend, just to keep the streak alive as the country’s oldest, continuously operated amusement park. The Kennywood Entertainment Company of Pennsylvania, followed by Palace Entertainment brought revival to the part with their financial resources and commitment to family entertainment.

Special thanks to our drivers and chaperones: John Kucsera, Gail Cypherd, Eliana Spinola, Martin Pedersen. These Lake Compounce facts are from the Weekend Arts article by Murphy in the New York Times called “Screaming Through the Trees” on August 20, 2010.

The Fishers Island Board of Education cordially invites you to attend one of four scheduled visioning sessions designed to gather input from the community on the future of Fishers Island School. The Board of Education and the faculty have met separately and jointly during the 2010-2011 academic year to discuss current issues facing the school and possible options for the future. The upcoming summer vision sessions are an opportunity for seasonal and year-round residents to contribute to this discussion. The Board of Education will synthesize the information and ideas generated at these sessions and develop a five year plan by November 1, 2011. The plan will include standards on what students will know and be able to do upon graduation, indica- tors of success, the school’s organizational structure, a philosophy of learning and a program of study. “The Fishers Island School provides students a firm foundation in core academic content, develops individual student’s strengths and capabilities, and fosters responsible citizenship.” Fishers Island Board of Education Mission ------School Repairs Underway

In May 2010 the voters approved the use $350,000.00 from the Capital Reserve Fund for repairs to the Fishers Island School building. The Board engaged Strategic Building Solutions, Inc. (SBS) of Old Saybrook, CT as their representative and project manager. SBS has assisted the Board with the selection of an architect and with the competitive bidding process. The Board awarded the project to Carlin Construction of New London, CT. The major improvements include repairs to the roof, new carpeting, electrical and fire alarm upgrades, ADA signage and the replacement of courtyard doors. Arrangements have been made to ensure that these repairs do not interfere with the IPP summer program. The work began on July 5th and the repairs should be completed before the start of the new school year in September. Charles E. Meyers Superintendent/Principal
