Local Knowledge

CASEY MEUDT, Sisters Owner and Manager, Blazin Saddles Home neighborhood: Downtown Sisters

About my business: My mom, Jacquie Zanck, and I (both Sisters residents for twenty-plus years) opened Blazin Saddles in 2010. In addition to the lifetime of retail experience that my mom adds, I have been working in the bike industry for about fifteen years. We recognized a need for a bike shop with topnotch service and selection. Out of that, Blazin Saddles was born!

Where to explore in summer: I love to head south of Sisters on Three Creeks Road, toward the mountains and lakes. It’s amazing out there! Whether you’re on foot or on a bike, there is never-ending exploration to be had. When things get dry and hot in late summer, head toward the temperate rain forest in the McKenzie River area via the scenic Highway 242.

How I show off the region to visitors: Hit the mountains, lakes and breweries, for sure! Start with a hike up Black Butte, then hang out by Dark Lake. Wrap up the afternoon with a beer and sandwich at The Depot Cafe.

Ideal day-off activity: A good moun- tain bike ride in the a.m., golf in the afternoon, and Three Creeks Brewing Company in the Sunriver Resort evening. Crowd Pleaser IPA with a big ol’ burger, please!

Local Knowledge

The Row BRET GRAHAM, BEND Owner, Bend Tour Company Home neighborhood: Orchard District

About my business: Guests can experience a capsule of Bend on our Sunset Spectacular Tour, which includes some highlights from the City, Art and Brewery tours, culminating with a spectacular Cascade sunset. Our Brew Taps tours provide an exploration of Bend’s incredible craft beer scene. Tastings begin in our tour center, where we customize the tour as we get to know our guests beer likes, dislikes and overall beer knowledge.

How I show off to visitors: Very much the same way I do for all of our tours. I find that showcasing the region is the easy part—getting my family and friends to leave is the hard part.

Where to unwind: I often go to Crux Fermentation Project to unwind, enjoy great beer and soak in the views. Silver Moon has some of my favorite beers and is where I am treated like I am at home... only better!

Ideal day-off activity: With so many activities to choose from, deciding on one would be much like a parent identifying their favorite child. Snowboarding in winter and golfing during our shoulder seasons are highlights.

Local Knowledge

REBECCA CHARLTON, BEND Owner, Cowgirl Cash Home neighborhood: Larkspur (Near Pilot Butte)

About my business: I opened my business eight years ago in its current location. My first shop was in a crafters mall where various artists and retailers rented space under one roof. There, I discovered that I could fill a need for vintage Western wear, from authentic cowboy boots to turquoise jewelry, belt buckles and hats. People are attracted to items that have a feel of old Bend. I added locally made dresses because boots and timeless cotton dresses are just too cute together.

Where to explore: I love the Deschutes River Trail. As Bend gets bigger and busier I tend to drive ten minutes farther to ensure that I have it almost to myself. East , past Lava Butte, is my current favorite spot for putting in my SUP, going for a trail run or heading out on a mountain bike ride.

How I show off the region to visitors: I usually start with a hike up Pilot Butte. It’s such a great place to get a lay of the land. From the top, face west and the Cascade Mountain Range is showcased perfectly, face east and the High Desert landscape holds many opportunities for adventure. I often take friends up Tumalo Mountain (out Cascade Lakes Highway, four-mile hike out and back), as well. Early mornings are best.

Ideal day-off activity: Wandering around down- town is always a treat. We have many unique shops. Don’t miss our alleys, as they are filled with art and history. I love the Deschutes Historical Society, Les Schwab Amphitheater located in the old Reed School. I attended first grade in that building, so it’s extra special. At Cowgirl Cash, A little farther...
