He offered the same paper as a keynote address at the New York City Phenomenology Group Graduate Student Conference, Reapproaching the Foundations of Phenomenology, at the New School in New York City on March 31, 2012.

Alumni and Post-Doc News

David Becker (PhD 2008) gave a talk on April 14, 2012 to the biannual meeting of the Long Island Philosophical Society, entitled "Some Thoughts on Plato's Republic". David is a professor at St. John’s University in Queens, NY.

Gary Gabor (PhD 2011) presented a talk, "Ammonius’ Derivation of Aristotle’s ten categories in the Isagoge commentary," at the conference, Ancient and Medieval Interpretations of Aristotle's Categories at Franciscan University of Steubenville on April 14, 2012. Gary will start work as a professor at Hamline University in the fall.

Brian Gregor published a review of Jason A. Mahn's book Fortunate Fallibility: Kierkegaard and the Power of Sin in Philosophy in Review XXXII (2012), no. 2, pp.114-16. Brian is a Post-doctoral fellow at Fordham University.

Michael Kelly (PhD 2004) has accepted a tenure track position at the University of San Diego.

Sterling Berry-Whitlock defended his dissertation "Contemporary Philosophy of Law and the Problem of the Rule of Recognition" on May 9, 2012. His mentor was Michael Baur.

Aaron Converse defended his dissertation "An Examination of Aquinas's Approach to Conscience" on December 14, 2011. His mentor was Joseph Koterski, S.J.

Sister Mary Denise D'Attore defended her dissertation "Thomas Aquinas on the Role of Second-Order Judgement in Human Electio" on May 2, 2012. Her mentor was Joseph Koterski, S.J.

Johanna Nashi defended her dissertation "A Humanistic Approach to Bystander Responsibility in Cases of Crimes against Humanity and Genocide" on April 2, 2012. Her mentor was John Drummond.

Christopher Rice defended his dissertation "The Value of Relationships with Other Species" on April 18, 2012. His mentor was Christopher Gowans.

Ian Rottenberg defended his dissertation "Sacred Text as Saturated Phenomenon: The Unspoken Command of Scripture" on April 24, 2012. His mentor was Merold Westphal.

Graduate Student Presentations Christopher Collins presented “Inquiry, Experimentation and the Conditions for a Democratic Ethos: A Deweyan Undergraduate Undertakings Approach to Law and Democracy” at the New    York Pragmatist Forum Meeting on “Pragmatism and Law,” Fernando J. Villalovs recently published April 27, 2012 at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center an article on Foucault and Derrida in La campus. Gaceta de Ciencia Politica, a journal based in Mexico City. Marta Layton presented “St. Anselm on Loving the Right    Thing” at the Eastern Division of the Society for Women in Senior philosophy/history major Philosophy's annual conference. The conference took place Mateusz Plaza, has received a Fulbright at Savannah State University in Baltimore, MD on April 28, research grant to study the 2012. phenomenology of Jozef Tischner and his “ of Solidarity” in Krakow, Poland. Emily Sullivan presented “Do Scientific Idealizations Threaten a Factive View of Understanding?” at the Fordham Philosophical Society Graduate Symposium on April 24, 2012.

Graduate Student Presentations- continued Zita Toth gave a presentation entitled “Descartes’ Optics and Some Medieval Theories of Vision” at the conference, Scientiae: Disciplines of Knowing in the Early Modern World, in Vancouver, BC, April 26-28, 2012.

Three graduate students presented papers at the North Texas Philosophical Association at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, April 11-13, 2012: David Gadon presented “Ambiguous Prescription: Butler and Merleau-Ponty on Questions of Ethics,” Brock Scheller presented “Incomplete Predicates and Approximation: Nehamas and the Range of Forms in Plato’s Middle Dialogues,” and Peter Seipel presented “Was Wittgenstein a Relativist?”
