Jake Nabasny ‘Beyond or Within’ Ontology: Early Derrida Reading Early Heidegger 0. Abstract The publication of Jacques Derrida’s 1964–5 seminar on Martin Heidegger marks a significant event. In these lectures, Derrida puts forth a heterodox reading of the project of fundamental ontology, claiming it is not and never was an ontological or metaphysical enterprise. This reading was intended to rescue Heideggerian Destruktion from the metaphysical lens contemporary scholars had placed it under. While this seminar reveals important insights into the origins of Derridian deconstruction, this paper argues that it ultimately gets Heidegger wrong. From a close reading of the Introduction of Being and Time and proximate lecture courses, I argue that Heidegger’s fundamental ontology is indebted to a phenomenological method that is thoroughly and explicitly ontological. Apart from setting the record straight about Heidegger, I show that this interpretation of Destruktion is inconsistent with Derrida’s reading of Heidegger before and after these lectures were presented. I conclude by tracing this inconsistency throughout Derrida’s later work and considering why the 1964–5 interpretation stands out. Ultimately, this seminar should be read as a stage in the development of Derrida’s mature thought, specifically in regard to the notion of différance. ‘This is a retroactive justification because these themes are only implicit in Sein und Zeit.’ (Derrida 2016, 73) 1. Cultural Marxism Is Real
1/9/2019 Cultural Marxism Is Real Published on Mises Institute (https://mises.org) Cultural Marxism Is Real January 4, 2019 - 5:58 PMAllen Mendenhall [1] Samuel Moyn, a Yale law professor, recently asked [2], “What is ‘cultural Marxism?’” His answer: “Nothing of the kind actually exists.” Moyn attributes the term cultural Marxism to the “runaway alt-right imagination,” claiming that it implicates zany conspiracy theories and has been “percolating for years through global sewers of hatred.” Alexander Zubatov, an attorney writing in Tablet, countered [3] that the “somewhat unclear and contested” term cultural Marxism “has been in circulation for over forty years.” It has, moreover, “perfectly respectable uses outside the dark, dank silos of the far right.” He concluded that cultural Marxism is neither a “conspiracy” nor a “mere right-wing ‘phantasmagoria,’” but a “coherent intellectual program, a constellation of dangerous ideas.” In this debate, I side with Zubatov. Here’s why. Despite the bewildering range of controversies and meanings attributed to it, cultural Marxism (the term and the movement) has a deep, complex history in Theory. The word “Theory” (with a capital T) is the general heading for research within the interpretative branches of the humanities known as cultural and critical studies, literary criticism, and literary theory — each of which includes a variety of approaches from the phenomenological to the psychoanalytic. In the United States, Theory is commonly taught and applied in English departments, although its influence is discernable throughout the humanities. A brief genealogy of different schools of Theory — which originated outside English departments, among philosophers and sociologists for example, but became part of English departments’ core curricula — shows not only that cultural Marxism is a nameable, describable phenomenon, but also that it proliferates beyond the academy. -

Pp. 305, $19.50. Literary criticism has never been anything but problematic to itself. There is, unless one is an artist for whom criticism is an off-shoot of the creative proces:i itself, something fundamentally egoistic in ex pecting anyone to read one's writings about one's reading of others' writings. Writing about literature is fundamentally tautological. And yet the business flourishes. It feeds on its own inflation, so that it is not uncommon to discover, as I did recently, that there are half a dozen critical books available on a particular author (Ford Madox Ford, in fact) and only two of his novels in print. Explication is more saleable than the primary literary experiences it is intended to ex plicate. The profes~;ionalisation of literary studies within the higher education system has resulted in a situation in which teachers and students spend more time reading criticism than reading literature, to such an extent, indeed, that criticism has ceased to see itself as a parasitic activity, but has begun to claim for itself the true originality, the true genius of the literary world. Critics used to feel compelled to make self-deprecating gestures before the transcendental power of the creative imagination: no longer-the work of literature has not come into its full existenc,e until it is realised by the critic; the literary work has become a footnote to the critical theories which represent the true 518 DALHOUSIE REVIEW creative endeavour of our times. -

JACQUES DERRIDA LAW AS ABSOLUTE HOSPITALITY JACQUES DE VILLE NOMIKOI CRITICAL LEGAL THINKERS Jacques Derrida Jacques Derrida: Law as Absolute Hospitality presents a comprehensive account and understanding of Derrida’s approach to law and justice. Through a detailed reading of Derrida’s texts, Jacques de Ville contends that it is only by way of Derrida’s deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence, and specifi cally in relation to the texts of Husserl, Levinas, Freud and Heidegger, that the reasoning behind his elusive works on law and justice can be grasped. Through detailed readings of texts such as ‘To Speculate – on Freud’, Adieu, ‘Declarations of Independence’, ‘Before the Law’, ‘Cogito and the History of Madness’, Given Time, ‘Force of Law’ and Specters of Marx, de Ville contends that there is a continuity in Derrida’s thinking, and rejects the idea of an ‘ethical turn’. Derrida is shown to be neither a postmodernist nor a political liberal, but a radical revolutionary. De Ville also controversially contends that justice in Derrida’s thinking must be radically distinguished from Levinas’s refl ections on ‘the Other’. It is the notion of absolute hospitality – which Derrida derives from Levinas, but radically transforms – that provides the basis of this argument. Justice must, on de Ville’s reading, be understood in terms of a demand of absolute hospitality which is imposed on both the individual and the collective subject. A much needed account of Derrida’s infl uential approach to law, Jacques Derrida: Law as Absolute Hospitality will be an invaluable resource for those with an interest in legal theory, and for those with an interest in the ethics and politics of deconstruction. -

Audre Lorde Zami.1 How to live a world of difference(s), a world in/as ongoing differentiation, in such ways that the outcome is not ever more separation and antagonism, exclusion and the fear of others, but so that new senses of commonality are envisioned? This article takes up this broad ethico- political (and to certain extents also insistingly human(ist)) quest for alternative worldly enactments, which I feel with contemporary urge on a planetary scale. Two issues seem at stake today when we approach this question of difference(s) and differentiality from such an ethico-political perspective: on the one hand, there seems to be an ever increasing sense of what can be called a post-secular awareness that ‘world’ is nothing but (dis)continuous differentiation, and that, thus, ‘we’ – and this article will be specifically concerned with the engagement of such ‘we’ – will not find any unambiguously ‘good’ alternative or ‘secure’ universal ground that is not always/already implicated in the unequal power relations constituting everything; and, on the other hand – and maybe as a consequence of such awareness – ‘we’ cannot not notice in our daily experiences the ubiquity of difference(s) played out globally as increasing inequalities and processes of exclusion, instigating frightening renewals of xeno- and other phobic anxieties. -
The Single Intent of Scripture Critical Examination of a Theological Construct
Grace TheologicalJourna/7.1 (1986) 81-110 THE SINGLE INTENT OF SCRIPTURE CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF A THEOLOGICAL CONSTRUCT RAJU D. KUNJUMMEN Evangelicals currently debate whether the Bible always has a "single intent" or if there is sometimes a "fuller meaning" (sensus plenior) due to divine inspiration. The literary theory of E. D. Hirsch indicates that meaning is 10 be associated with authorial intent. Examination of key passages of Scripture indicates that the authorial intent of the divine author sometimes contains implications that extend beyond those intended by the human author. * * * INTRODUCTION HE issue of hermeneutical theory in relation to biblical interpreta T tion is prominent today. By all indications, hermeneutics will continue to be in the forefront of evangelical concerns. Therefore, there is an ongoing need to examine the validity of various theories in this discipline. Hermeneutics is not a discipline isolated from theology, though it may be true that biblical and exegetical theology has relied to some extent on a hermeneutical theory derived from the humanism of the Renaissance. It has been pointed out that the "problem of hermen eutics is always subordinate to the problem of revelation, for one's view of the Bible will determine his interpretation."! It is imperative that interpretive theory be tested by Scripture. The present study proposes to examine the hermeneutical principle of a "single intent of Scripture. " Walter C.
