Editor Notes:

2020 was a year of clarity and inward reflection of who we are. The vision of the Fort Gordon Ques stated at the beginning of the OY quickly changed due to the pandemic. If not for the application of our cardinal principles which we live by, what could have been a very bad year became a highly successful one of “service” and “lifting as we climb”. This workbook reflects the perseverance and ingenuity of UGG. We gratefully submit this workbook on behalf of our chapter and the editing team to tell our story. Thank you to our brothers,

Bro. Don Darden - Chief Editor Bro. Wesley Thrower - Editor Bro. Vadrekus ’Neal - Graphic Designer Bro. Shawn McGuire - Graphic Designer Bro. Dominic Warren - KRS Special Thanks to all Contributors

National Achievement Week is a mandated program of the Omega Fraternity, Inc., that was originally designed to promote the study of African American life and history. Its beginnings date back to the 1920 Grand Conclave in Nashville. It was at this Conclave that Bro. Carter G. Woodson inspired the overall idea. In 1927, at his urging, the Fraternity made National Negro Achievement Week an annual observance. In 1976, this commemoration evolved into Immediate past Basileus Bro. Chuck Black History Month. Presently, Walker of UGG with 18th Georgia State the Achievement Week Program is used to recognize those Rep. L. Keith Redding (guest speaker) individuals at the local and national levels who have made significant contributions toward improving the quality of life for African Americans.

On Monday, March 16, 2020, the surrounding schools were shut down, due to COVID 19. The issue of feeding students during COVID 19 became the primary concern for local leaders. Augusta school districts had a creative a strategic plan to have meals that can be picked up at the local schools. UGG Brothers handed out lunches at seven different schools, as well as participated in deliveries. There were over 1000 meals (breakfast and lunch combos) provided daily. UGG also identified other opportunities to help the community, resulting in milk and lunches with expiration dates being used the following Monday. Brothers also delivered leftover food and milk to the homeless, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Between March 14, 2020 and May 8, 2020, UGG Brothers assisted in providing over 70,000 meals to school-age children, Salvation Army Kitchen, and the homeless. These activities were performed by individual Brothers going to the schools nearest them; utilizing protective gear, practicing physical distancing, and keeping their families and themselves safe. Although the impact of social distancing and shelter in place has challenged the community, including how Omega Men function and support the community, UGG continues to be innovative in making a difference and remaining responsive to the needs of the community. In the era of so many new problems, Upsilon Gamma Gamma, Graduate Chapter quickly stepped in and contributed greatly impacting the local community.

On 16 March, Richmond and Columbia County schools were shut down due to the corona virus, creating a serious issue for feeding students on meal plans for breakfast and lunch for those school districts. Augusta school districts had a plan but not the manpower. Chapter responded by volunteering, handing out to go meals at seven different schools, as well as helping in the daily delivery of over 1000 meals (breakfast and lunch combos). On 28 March, chapter provided community support across continents and borders. UGG partnered with TEAM CSR Ghana to help impact communities by building boreholes and supporting two support organizations. Brother Jonathan Akauamoah, of (TX) Chapter, and CEO of TEAM CSR assisted in the selection of Street Girls Aid, a shelter for homeless young girls escaping forced marriages and other abuses, and Mother love Foundation, an Orphanage for abandoned children with HIV and AIDS, infected and affected children who are orphans rejected by community members and society due to and discrimination, making it difficult for them to live their life.

As the Ghana government instituted a lock down due to COVID-19, people were hoarding food at prices that had more than doubled, making it difficult for these two organizations that depended on food donations to feed their wards. Despite the challenges to social distancing, working from home, and volunteering in our community, chapter was able to provide uplift halfway around the world by providing $200 worth of food for these organizations. The leadership, Reverend John Azumah and his wife, expressed their personal gratitude to the chapter via Whatsapp platform. The home is registered at the registrar general department of Ghana and the social welfare department of Georgia east municipal assembly.

On 9 May, Upsilon Gamma Gamma chapter with assistance from Tau Chi chapter “Ghana Ques” commissioned and raised $4,000 to donate a Borehole in Ghana (Afrokrotia). All money was generated by charitable donation and transferred to the Blessed to Bless Foundation for remittance to TEAM CSR Ghana. This was especially important as it made water available during the COVID-19 pandemic; reduced the trek of young men and women searching for water; as well as, having to boil and sanitize water, helping to prevent the potential spread of the COVID-19. While only a few hundred live in the community, it will support thousands in the Afrokrotia area.

Great support from our friends and family. Every donation was welcomed (10,20, 50, 100, dollars or more). We raised $1925 of the $8000 goal. This effort supported two wells for two selected villages. The Blessed to Bless Foundation sponsored $500 to survey the wells; money was provided to Brother Jonathan Akuamoah (1-Sp87-Psi Gamma-Kent State) Chief Engineer.

Site was surveyed 17 January. Afrokrotia is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, a part of the Akwamufie township. It has over 500 people, surrounded by other smaller townships.

Between November 2019 and the present, Upsilon Gamma Gamma Chapter facilitated creation and activation of the Brother Andrew Jefferson Sr Chapter of Omega Lamplighters. The Lamplighters are for young men eight grade thru twelfth. This last school year we only had eight through eleven. We now have three Seniors this coming year. The Omega Lamplighter organization meets on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Upsilon Gamma Gamma Chapter partnered with the Augusta Boys and Girls Club to facilitate a meeting place. Since the COVID-19 social distancing the Lamplighters have met on Zoom, teleconferencing, and once outside in a park with mask. Some of the workshops shared with these young men were: Public Speaking, Leadership, Dress, Interacting with Adults, Career Selection, Prayer, College Preparation, March down/Hop practice, and ongoing tutoring for their schoolwork. Tutoring was provided every Wednesday at the Richmond County Library, and on Zoom when the Library closed. Most importantly, some of the ministers in the chapter provide one on one counseling for the young men when requested. The constant contact with the young men was essential, and they were able reach out to the Brothers via text groups, and WhatsApp. This first year we provided every young man with a grey suit, black shoes, tie, Grey wool cap, Lamplighter sweatshirt, T-shirt, and mask. We monitor their report cards and receive feedback from their parents on their conduct, and sometimes personal issue. This has been a very successful first year.
