    ALPHA CHI OMEGA Accreditation Report 2014-2015 Intellectual Development Alpha Chi Omega was ranked second out of nine Panhellenic Sororities in the fall 2014 semester with a GPA of 3.4475, a decrease of .01306 from the spring 2014 semester. The 3.4475 GPA placed the chapter above the All Sorority and All Greek average. Alpha Chi Omega was ranked first out of nine Panhellenic Sororities in the spring 2015 semester with a GPA of 3.48402, an increase of .03652 from the fall 2014 semester. The 3.48402 GPA placed the chapter above the All Sorority and All Greek average. Alpha Chi Omega’s spring 2015 new member class GPA was 3.383, ranking first out of nine Panhellenic Sororities. Alpha Chi Omega had 46.6% of the chapter on the Dean’s List in the fall 2014 semester and 28.2% on the Dean’s List in the spring 2015 semester. Alpha Chi Omega requires a minimum 2.6 GPA for membership. This standard is higher than the Inter/National Headquarters and University requirements. Alpha Chi Omega fosters an environment for strong academic performance. The chapter provides in-house tutoring, peer mentoring, and regular study hours.     SUPPORTING THE CHINESE, JAPANESE, AND KOREAN LANGUAGES IN THE OPENVMS OPERATING SYSTEM By Michael M. T. Yau ABSTRACT The Asian language versions of the OpenVMS operating system allow Asian-speaking users to interact with the OpenVMS system in their native languages and provide a platform for developing Asian applications. Since the OpenVMS variants must be able to handle multibyte character sets, the requirements for the internal representation, input, and output differ considerably from those for the standard English version. A review of the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean writing systems and character set standards provides the context for a discussion of the features of the Asian OpenVMS variants. The localization approach adopted in developing these Asian variants was shaped by business and engineering constraints; issues related to this approach are presented. INTRODUCTION The OpenVMS operating system was designed in an era when English was the only language supported in computer systems. The Digital Command Language (DCL) commands and utilities, system help and message texts, run-time libraries and system services, and names of system objects such as file names and user names all assume English text encoded in the 7-bit American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) character set. As Digital's business began to expand into markets where common end users are non-English speaking, the requirement for the OpenVMS system to support languages other than English became inevitable. In contrast to the migration to support single-byte, 8-bit European characters, OpenVMS localization efforts to support the Asian languages, namely Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, must deal with a more complex issue, i.e., the handling of multibyte character sets.

    Package mathfont v. 1.6 User Guide Conrad Kosowsky December 2019 kosowsky.latex@gmail.com For easy, off-the-shelf use, type the following in your docu- ment preamble and compile using X LE ATEX or LuaLATEX: \usepackage[hfont namei]{mathfont} Abstract The mathfont package provides a flexible interface for changing the font of math- mode characters. The package allows the user to specify a default unicode font for each of six basic classes of Latin and Greek characters, and it provides additional support for unicode math and alphanumeric symbols, including punctuation. Crucially, mathfont is compatible with both X LE ATEX and LuaLATEX, and it provides several font-loading commands that allow the user to change fonts locally or for individual characters within math mode. Handling fonts in TEX and LATEX is a notoriously difficult task. Donald Knuth origi- nally designed TEX to support fonts created with Metafont, and while subsequent versions of TEX extended this functionality to postscript fonts, Plain TEX's font-loading capabilities remain limited. Many, if not most, LATEX users are unfamiliar with the fd files that must be used in font declaration, and the minutiae of TEX's \font primitive can be esoteric and confusing. LATEX 2"'s New Font Selection System (nfss) implemented a straightforward syn- tax for loading and managing fonts, but LATEX macros overlaying a TEX core face the same versatility issues as Plain TEX itself. Introduction According to the researches, it is assumed that the culture of the early Islamic period in Egypt was very similar to the contemporary Coptic (Qibti)/ Byzantine (Rumi) culture. This is most evident in their language, especially in writing. It was mainly Greek and Coptic which adopted the letters deriving from Greek and Demotic. Thus, it was normal in those days for the official documents to be written in Greek, and, the others written in Coptic.(1) Gold, silver and copper coins were also minted imitating Byzantine Solidus (gold coin) and Follis (copper coin) and Sassanian Drahm (silver coin), and they were sometimes decorated with the representation of the religious legends, such as "Allahu", engraved in a blank space. In spite of such situation, around A. H. 79 (698), Caliph 'Abd al-Malik b. Marwan implemented the coinage reformation to promote Arabisation of coins, and in A. H. 87 (706), 'Abd Allahi b. 'Abd al-Malik, the governor- general of Egypt, pursued Arabisation of official documentation under a decree by Caliph Walid b. 'Abd al-Malik.(2) As a result, the Arabic letters came into the immediate use for the coin inscriptions and gradually for the official documents. However, when the figures were involved, the Greek or the Coptic numerals were used together with the Arabic letters.(3) The Abjad Arabic numerals were also created by assigning the numerical values to the Arabic alphabetic (abjad) letters just like the Greek numerals, but they did not spread very much.(4) It was in the latter half of the 8th century that the Indian numerals, generally regarded as the forerunners of the Arabic numerals, were introduced to the Islamic world.

These codes are organized according to a certain methodology called an encoding scheme. The list of all characters so encoded is referred to as the “repertoire” of characters in the given encoding schemes. For example, ASCII is one encoding scheme, perhaps the one best known to the average non-technical person in North America. “A”, “B”, & “C” are three characters in the repertoire of this encoding scheme. These three characters are assigned encodings 41, 42 & 43 in ASCII (expressed here in hexadecimal). 1.2 MARC8 "MARC8" is the term commonly used to refer both to the encoding scheme and its repertoire as used in MARC records up to 1998. The ‘8’ refers to the fact that, unlike Unicode which is a multi-byte per character code set, the MARC8 encoding scheme is principally made up of multiple one byte tables in which each character is encoded using a single 8 bit byte.     Greek numbers 05/10/2006 12:02 PM History topic: Greek number systems There were no single Greek national standards in the first millennium BC. since the various island states prided themselves on their independence. This meant that they each had their own currency, weights and measures etc. These in turn led to small differences in the number system between different states since a major function of a number system in ancient times was to handle business transactions. However we will not go into sufficient detail in this article to examine the small differences between the system in separate states but rather we will look at its general structure. We should say immediately that the ancient Greeks had different systems for cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers so we must look carefully at what we mean by Greek number systems. Also we shall look briefly at some systems proposed by various Greek mathematicians but not widely adopted. The first Greek number system we examine is their acrophonic system which was use in the first millennium BC. 'Acrophonic' means that the symbols for the numerals come from the first letter of the number name, so the symbol has come from an abreviation of the word which is used for the number. Here are the symbols for the numbers 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000. Acrophonic 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000. We have omitted the symbol for 'one', a simple '|', which was an obvious notation not coming from the initial letter of a number. For 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 there will be only one puzzle for the reader and that is the symbol for 5 which should by P if it was the first letter of Pente.
