CONSTITUTION OF CORAZONES UNIDOS SIEMPRE CHI UPSILON SIGMA NATIONAL LATIN SORORITY, INCORPORATED PREAMBLE We, the members of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated, aware of the prejudices and obstacles facing the women of color in our communities, dedicate ourselves to the improvement of these conditions and working towards the betterment of all women. We have unified ourselves through the sisterhood of Corazones Unidos Siempre and by our Founders' ideals of open communication and community service, as well as the development of a political, educational, social, and cultural awareness. We devote ourselves to this challenge, to be achieved through hard work, patience, and the collective effort to educate, as exemplified in our motto, "Wisdom Through Education." It is by this Constitution that we shall govern ourselves to the realization of these ideals. ARTICLE I. NAME This organization shall be known as Corazones Unidos Siempre, Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated. Commonly known as Chi Upsilon Sigma, and hereinafter referred to as “the sorority”. ARTICLE II. PURPOSE The purpose of this sorority shall be: A) To develop an educational, cultural, political, and social awareness; B) To open lines of communications in order to service the community; C) To promote and preserve the Latino culture; D) To provide women with a choice among Greek letter sororities. ARTICLE III. MEMBERSHIP Section 1 General member 1.1 Members of this sorority shall consist of those women initiated and/or inducted by the Grand Chapter Board or a recognized chapter. 1.2 A member shall receive all rights and privileges bestowed upon her by this sorority. 1.3 No woman shall be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of this sorority on the basis of race, health, age, ancestry, marital or veteran status, sexual preference, color, National/ethnic background, political or religious affiliation. 1.4 The category of membership includes undergraduate, alumna, member at large, and honorary. Section 2 Chapters There shall be undergraduate and graduate chapters, as well as an honorary chapter. ARTICLE IV. GRAND CHAPTER BOARD Section 1 The Grand Chapter Board shall encompass the executive board and appointed officers. 1.1 The Grand Chapter Board shall embody the following elected offices: a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian, alumnae relations officer, community service coordinator, expansion officer, historian, intake administrative officer, public relations administrator, social activities coordinator, and undergraduate relations officer. Confidential Page 1 Fall 1999 1.2 The appointed offices shall embody the following: alumnae advisors, Grand Chapter Board committees, and such other officers as from time to time may be needed. Section 2 The Grand Chapter Board shall serve as the national governing body of this sorority. ARTICLE V. FINANCIAL PROVISIONS The sorority shall be financed by dues and fees received from its members, as well as fundraising efforts and other contributions. ARTICLE VI. INCORPORATION ARTICLE VII. MEETINGS Section 1 National Conference The sorority shall assemble annually in national conference. Section 2 Grand Chapter Board Grand Chapter Board shall convene periodically. ARTICLE VIII. PARLIAMENTARIAN AUTHORITY The sorority shall be governed by current edition of Roberts Rules of Order in all matters not consistent with its constitution and By-laws. ARTICLE VIX LIABILITY The sorority expressly disclaims responsibility of the Grand Chapter Board for actions of chapters or individual members who are in violation of both the letter and spirit of the constitution and bi-laws. ARTICLE X AMENDMENTS This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members assembled in the national conference. Notice of purposed amendments shall be published to chapters at least 30 days before the convening of the conference. Confidential Page 2 Fall 1999 .
