6 PANHELLENIC RECRUITMENT 2018 T he Four Pillars THE FOUR PILLARS OF FRATERNITY & SORORITY LIFE The four pillars of fraternity and sorority life reflect the values that members work to uphold. Focusing on these four vital areas ensures that fraternity and sorority members will be well-rounded individuals ready to successfully navigate their world during and beyond their college years.

Scholarship Academic excellence is a vital aspect of fraternity and sorority membership at Bucknell. Scholastic standards are important for each individual fraternity or sorority as well as the community as a whole. Programming, incentives, recognition and ongoing support are provided to help fraternity and sorority members pursue academic success. Academic achievement is the reason students are at Bucknell; and sororities are designed to help their members meet the goal. Leadership Developing leaders today for life after college is an important part of fraternity and sorority involvement. Fraternity and sorority members participate in a variety of programs that provide leadership development. There are many ways to be a leader in Bucknell’s community, including chapter or council officer positions, national or regional leadership conferences, campus-based leadership opportunities and committee involvement. Service Service is a meaningful pillar of fraternity and sorority involvement. It is perhaps the most personally rewarding of the pillars, as members are provided with opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work and implement philanthropic events to raise money for charitable organizations. The opportunities ensure that fraternity and sorority members will have an impact on their community and develop a lifelong habit of giving back. Sisterhood Joining a sorority is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond the boundaries of ordinary friendships. Bonds of sisterhood are formed within a sorority organization and provide fraternity and sorority members with a home away from home, mentorship, career networking and a sense of community within the University. Sorority members enjoy lifelong bonds and connections with friends that can provide support in life’s significant moments and celebration in life’s success.

14 PANHELLENIC RECRUITMENT 2018 Frequently Asked Questions Am I required to attend all of the events during the recruitment period? Yes, recruitment is an opportunity to meet women in all of our sororities and learn about what each sorority has to offer, in order to make the best decision for you. Please keep in mind that it is the sorority’s decision as to whether or not they invite you to attend every event during recruitment, so you can maximize your information and opportunities, and help make your decision making process easier. If you miss an event and are not excused or do not have an emergency, you will be withdrawn from the recruitment process. You may not miss one chapter event and attend another if you are not excused. If you will be coming late to a round or will be missing an entire round, please notify your Recruitment Counselor and the Panhellenic Recruitment Chair by 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 29. We ask that you complete an absentee form provided by your Recruitment Counselor. You will want to complete one for every round that you miss. Your responses should be about yourself and should allow the sororities to learn more about you. If I go through recruitment, am I obligated to join? No, recruitment is an opportunity to learn about our different sororities and what they have to offer. It is an opportunity for you to decide whether you would like to join a sorority.

If you decide to withdraw from recruitment, please notify your Recruitment Counselor. She will ask you to complete a short survey about the process. This is so we can work to improve the recruitment process for our potential new members. It is easier for us to know if you have decided to withdraw than to try to track you down. Am I allowed to talk to sorority members outside of the recruitment rounds? Until Preference Round, your contact with active sorority members is limited to the following: academic coursework, short greetings and minimal conversations. After Preference Round until bids are distributed on Bid Day, strict silence will be observed. You should not be communicating with active sorority members via verbal, written, typed, printed or text message communication. These rules are in place so that no sister has the opportunity to put undue pressure on you about which chapter you choose to join. Sorority membership, after all, is your decision. What does it mean to sign a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement? When you sign a Membership Recruitment Binding Agreement (MRABA), you should write down the chapters in preferential order from whom you would accept a bid. Once you have signed and submitted your preferences, your choices are FINAL and no changes may be made. May I decide not to accept a bid that I receive? You do not have to accept a bid; however, you must contact the sorority from which you received the bid directly to decline it. If you receive an invitation for membership (a bid) from any National Panhellenic Conference group that you have listed on your MRABA, and you choose not to accept it, you may not pledge any other NPC women’s fraternity or sorority on the campus for one calendar year from the time of your signing according to the NPC Unanimous Agreements, which express the fair play essential to interfraternity activity and sets forth the rights of women’s fraternities as private, voluntary social organizations.

BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY 15 Frequently Asked Questions Is it possible that I will not receive a bid? What happens if I do not receive a bid? Invitation to sorority membership is not guaranteed to all Potential New Members. If you do not receive a bid to sorority membership, you will be notified by a member of the Panhellenic Recruitment Staff prior to the culmination of Primary Membership Recruitment on Bid Day. Is there a grade requirement to be able to join a sorority? The Panhellenic Council does not set a minimum GPA requirement. A student is eligible to participate in Primary Membership Recruitment if they are a regularly matriculated student on campus. They must also be in their second year of higher education and hold a sophomore rank or higher. Individual sororities set their own GPA requirements, please review the following pages to view each chapters minimum GPA. How much of a time commitment is joining a sorority? Joining a sorority is a time commitment, but you may decide how much time to devote to your sorority. Each sorority has weekly meetings that you are required to attend as well as various mandatory events throughout the semester. There are also other events including philanthropy, athletic and social events that you may decide whether or not to participate in. Keep in mind that you will get more out of your sorority by being more active, so we encourage you to seek out the many opportunities offered by your organization. On the other hand, sororities look favorably on women who are also involved in other groups and organizations on campus, so you are more than welcome to join a sorority, even if you already have other commitments. What happens during the New Member Education Period? The New Member Education Period gives you an opportunity to learn about the history of your sorority, nationally and locally, as well as get to know the members of your new member class and the entire organization. Do sorority members haze their New Members? No, hazing is prohibited by the State of Pennsylvania, Bucknell University, the College Panhellenic Council and each individual chapter. If you feel that you are being hazed or know of a hazing incident, report it immediately to any of the following: Public Safety, the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs, or anonymously online at bucknell.edu/hazing. What role does alcohol play in the sorority membership experience? Alcohol should not be the primary reason for seeking membership in a sorority, and is not permitted in sorority suites or houses, based on the National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreement. Social events hosted by the chapter that include alcohol must utilize a third party vendor. Each chapter is required to follow all state and local laws, chapter policies and the university’s social host policies. That being said social events with alcohol do take place on campus and some members choose to drink while others choose not to. Whether you choose to use alcohol or not, our hope is that you’ll find a meaningful experience beyond social events. Still, it is important that our community is focused on the safety of its members. Bucknell University encourages its students to seek and/or call for assistance for themselves or others when someone is overly intoxicated and is in need of medical assistance. Important information regarding the Medical Amnesty Policy can be found in the Student Handbook. Should you or a friend need immediate assistance please contact Public Safety at 570-577-3333.
