Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Upsilon Chapter Fort Wayne, Indiana 2019 E.A. Charlton Scholarship Application

Dear Scholarship Applicant,

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter seated in Fort Wayne, IN, is pleased to announce that it plans to award one or more one-thousand and five hundred-dollar ($1,500 USD) scholarships to eligible male students of color pursuing a post-secondary degree.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was organized for the purpose of promoting education among young African-American men on college campuses and assisting them in realizing their career goals. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has since widened its scope to include programs servicing other segments of the community. The Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter has committed itself to the progress of the greater Fort Wayne area by assisting students of color in post-secondary education.

Our Mission “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.”

All applications must be received or post-marked to the address on the application by Monday, March 2, 2020. Scholarship recipients will be notified on or before Monday, March 9, 2020. Scholarship recipient will be asked to attend the Black and Gold Ball on March 20, 2020 at the Coliseum to receive his scholarship award.

About the E.A. Charlton Scholarship The E.A. Charlton Scholarship is named in memorial for our brother who was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity through the Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter. Brother Charlton was a noted educator of Fort Wayne Community Schools. The scholarship money may be used as part of the financial package; which covers the costs related to the college experience. This may include books or other educational supplies. Since 1974, Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has contributed over $70,000 to local high school graduates.

About Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter Theta Upsilon Lambda (TUL) Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded in January of 1966 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, by 11 captivating Alpha men who had all been initiated into the Fraternity while undergraduates at various colleges throughout the United States. These men were the leaders, educators, activists, and voices for the local African-American community at that time. In fact, six of the 11 Founders were Doctors of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Education, making TUL one of the most illustrious chapters within the District of Indiana. About Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek- fraternity established for African-American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

Applicants for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be a male graduating senior from one of the high schools located in Allen County, Indiana. 2. Identify as African-American/Black (completely or in part). 3. Demonstrate a financial need. 4. Have a minimum of 2.50 G.P.A on a 4.0 scale. 5. Application must be emailed or postmarked by Monday, March 2, 2020. 6. Submit an official high school transcript. 7. Submit one letter of character reference from a community member or school staff member. 8. Possess acceptance letter from the college/university. 9. Complete essay (details on the last page of the application).
